The MGM Grand Detroit garners mixed feedback from its visitors. While the beds are comfortable and the front desk staff professional, some guests have called out issues with room cleanliness and maintenance. The service is generally welcoming, yet occasionally marred by slow response times. The pool and spa offer relaxation, albeit with some restrictions and operational hiccups. Although the atmosphere is comfortable with a cozy elegance, certain areas appear dated, and the value proposition is questioned due to high costs and unexpected charges. Its proximity to Little Caesar's Arena is a highlight for many travelers.

I was a little on the fence after reading some of the reviews but I am glad I took the chance. The hotel was excellent, the front desk was friendly, the bed was comfortable and the room was spotless.

Originally I checked in on the app and was given a room on the 4th floor so I decided to check in at the front desk to see if I could be moved to a higher floor, the front desk checked and upgraded to the grand view floor, the room had a beautiful view.

The bathroom was massive and the shower with the body jets was amazing.

The free valet for hotel guest was a nice touch and the valets were always quick.

Overall I had an excellent stay and look forward to returning in the future next time I’m in Detroit.

The room had no fridge, just a mini bar. We removed some items so we could keep our left overs cold. Noticed later a small printed sign 6 feet away from the fridge that says I will be charged if items are touched or moved. How can you charge me for moving the items when i didn't actually open them or take them?? So upon checkout, i asked the front desk about this. I was told that once housekeeping does their assessment of what was taken, the charges will be dropped before I am charged and it would be settled. Guess what, I was charged anyway for all the items. Very disappointing. Either only charge guests for items that are actually used, or provide rooms with a fridge large enough to use for food and other personal items such as medications. No where can I find a place to request a review of these charges or contact support on your website. I cant even find my reservation on my account. I hate to leave a bad score on this, because the rest of my experience was pretty delightful.

Let me begin by saying that the employees at the MGM Grand Detroit were great. Kayla, Ernest, and Julie were very helpful at the front desk; and we appreciated them greatly. Valet attendants were timely, polite, and very helpful; and the housekeeping staff were very nice as well. The hotel's "Living Room" is always a cozy and comfortable space. The food at TAP, and the foodcourts in the casino were also very good (w/ the exception of waiting exceptionally long on a Saturday evening for wings @ Central; thankfully Chef and his employees assisted us with that).

This was not our first time as guests at MGM Grand, but it may be our last. My fiance` and I were looking to have a really nice staycation, but the room was lackluster, and appeared to need a serious update. The carpet had stains in it (and was wet upon arrival; which I had to report, to avoid charges- see pictures below). Sadly, the carpet was wet for two of the three days that we were guests. We also found a couple of holes in the wall next to the bed(see pictures below). Additionally, the sofa in the room appeared that it had been slept on, or rolled upon one two many times; and the refrigerator and furniture appeared worn as well (regrettably, I forgot to take those pictures; but chips in the furniture may be seen in the pics that I took of the carpet below, if you look closely).

It was my understanding that the room we booked would also have robes, but we did not have them in our rooms like before. Surprisingly, I probably would not have used them for the pool/spa, because when we did visit the area the pool was so unbecoming with dirt, that I didn't have a desire to swim. However, other areas of the spa were clean. The safe in the room was also broken (every time a number was put in, an error code showed) so items were unable to be secured.

Lastly, our room service was billed to the card instead of being applied to our $50 room credit, It was not realized until we checked out. When I called a few hours later to inquire, I was told that "although the charge was still pending, it was nothing that could be done, because it had to be used while we were guests." I did not know that I had to tell room service to use the credit, I assumed it would automatically be used. Not to mention I filled the room service card out and placed it on our door. There was no place for me to alert them that the room credit would be used.

Basically, the room just did not provide us with the experience that we thought we paid for, and hoped we would have. We were very disappointed, because this was a place we thought could be our little escape while still in the city. Yet, it was not.

Response from MGM Resorts Guest Experience, Owner at MGM Grand Detroit
Responded Aug 17, 2023
Dear antoinabR2200UN, We want to thank you for taking the time to provide us with your very detailed feedback regarding your recent stay at MGM Grand Detroit. We truly appreciate hearing about our guests' experiences because it helps us identify areas where we need to improve. We are overjoyed to hear that our staff, especially Kayla, Ernest, and Julie, along with our valet and housekeeping staff, were able to provide you with the outstanding service we strive to give all of our guests. We aim to create a welcoming, comfortable environment for all of our guests, so it's great to know that our "Living Room", TAP and our food courts also met your expectations. However, we deeply regret to hear about the condition of the room and the various disappointments you experienced during your stay. Issues such as a wet and stained carpet, holes in the wall, worn furniture, a lack of robes, a dirty pool area, and a broken safe are certainly not indicative of the high standards we set for our property. We take comments like these very seriously and have been forwarded to the appropriate departments for immediate review. We understand your frustration regarding the billing of room service to your card instead of your room credit. It seems like there was a miscommunication on our part, and for this, we apologize. Once again, thank you for providing us with your honest feedback. We certainly hope that you will give us another opportunity to exceed your expectations and show you the improved experience on your next visit. Best regards, Mona Guest Experience

Valet staff did not open the door for my wife. Room smelled. Room service food was brought in paper & plastic containers with plastic forks & spoons. Food was dropped off in paper bag. NOT what you expect from a $500 + per night hotel. It is clear that the MGM chain has given up on this particular location.

I came down with a bad cold on the 5 hour drive to the MGM in Detroit. I rested and ordered food for the next morning. When my food arrived lukewarm and late the following morning, I asked the lady who delivered my breakfast for hot tea with honey since I couldn’t get through to the front desk prior to the food delivery to ask them to include the tea with my breakfast. I was still on hold for 45 minutes and counting when she arrived. She said yes, and I tipped her extra to do so. It never came. I also asked the front desk agents in person 3 different times over the course of my short stay if I could please have some tea, honey and lemon brought to my room as I was losing my voice as this point and had a show to go to that evening. I never once received it. This was highly disappointing given the rates I paid, and should have been no hassle to accommodate…the expectations that come with a hotel with a stellar reputation like MGM really went down in my book. On top of this, I was charged over $150 for picking up mini bar items and placing them back down. I looked at the charging box to see what cables were included, the romance kit to see what it was, and the white claws to see what flavors they were, all of which I put right back in place unopened. This made me feel belittled and seems like an MGM ploy to get more money out of guests, as things like this often go unnoticed. There was no sign or “warning” anywhere to alert guests of these erroneous charges. As large of a corporation as MGM is, you’d think they wouldn’t really need to pull scams like this. It’s the little things that matter and make guests feel comfortable and at ease, and you guys really missed the mark this time. Will not recommend until this location is under new management or fixes, the situation.

Dear klary1307, Thank you for sharing your insightful feedback with us on MGM Grand Detroit. We deeply apologize for the inconvenience encountered during your stay. We have noted your concerns and will look into the specifics of each. In relation to the mini-bar charges, the sensors inside the minibar actually activate when an item is moved for a certain period. This can result in charges, even if the item is put back. We understand that this might have led to a misunderstanding and we apologize for not making this clearer. We would like to reassure you that our management team is looking into this with the seriousness it deserves. Once again, we extend our sincere apologies for the inconveniences caused and thank you for alerting us to these issues, giving us the chance to improve. We hope that this experience will not deter you from staying with us in the future, as we would love nothing more than to deliver you a seamless experience. Best Regards, Mona Guest Experience MGM Resorts International

After the hotel survey was emailed, I waited ten days before posting a review. I figured that was smoke time for someone with MGM to respond.

I booked a King Executive Suite for $450. The room desperately needed an update. The carpeting was worn and stained. The oversized shower had mold in the corners. The couch looked like something from a frat house and should have been replaced long ago. The view from the room was fabulous. But, at $450 per night, MGM should be appalled and embarrassed to charge that rate.

Dinner at the D Steakhouse was comparable to a chain restaurant. The service and food lack everything you expect from an MGM Property. I imagine the food hall/marketplace had better food than the overpriced steak I was served.

The center bar staff was excellent. The security team was outstanding as well.

The casino is still non-smoking and more enjoyable than the smoke-filled Greektown casino. But they still have the same problem as before with the lack of consistent table game rating. It just isn't that difficult to rate table game players…laziness!!!

Overall, it is a good property. But the room rates, when not comp’d, are absurd, especially given the poor upkeep and worn and outdated furnishings.

Commode was used and not flushed at check in. Made us wonder about the rest of the room. Took 3 days to have requested linen service for the room. Staff acted as though they didn't care or it was "not their job" to correct room issues. Fine dining resaurant says open until midnight but stops seating at 10:30 and says "the kitchen is closed. Don't like it, contact Amy J".

Came to hotel for a 2 room reservation for a bachelorette party in which they apparently gave away both rooms and almost didn’t have rooms for me. What was rooms next to each other was then rooms that were on the same floor but spread out. Then we entered the first room where there was crumbs on the floor and bed as well as wine stains on the floor. After telling the front desk, I was treated like a child about the mess (22yo) and told that it was clean. I stayed firm and listed more, so they called housekeeping and it took 45 minutes for housekeeping to “clean”. Mind you we had dinner reservations, so our party had to get ready in one room while they “cleaned”. When it was completed, we came back and the toilet had stains of poop, as well as someone’s food in the fridge (our group hadn’t even put their stuff in the room yet). Was given a food credit that didn’t cover room service or alcohol and zero refunds or credit for the room. Really disappointed.

Mostly what I don't like about Mgm Detroit is the cliental. Often the guests are unruly, rude and acting a fool. Perhaps due to being over served? Also I always get approached by panhandling from at least one or two people. This is a casino, that's just bad business to allow this type of behavior. It really makes a casino look bad. Also the self serve beverage are was trashy and just dirty. The room was pretty nice but I feel like Mgm makes enough money to put trash can liners in their room and bathroom trash cans.

Always call and ask about if the pool & spa is open and working properly. The rooms are nice but the bed is a bit stiff if you prefer a harder bed. Some rooms have a tub and shower and some only have showers. Be sure to ask. The concierge floor has both tub and shower but no food was available on that floor.
