Fort Pontchartrain Detroit, a Wyndham Hotel, is often celebrated for its charming atmosphere and unique room designs. While the prime location and remarkable views are a highlight for guests, some have called out the need for room updates and maintenance. The staff's friendliness stands out, though experiences with valet and room service have been mixed.
Cleanliness is generally commendable, yet there are occasional inconsistencies. Despite the prime amenities, reviewers warn of expensive parking and some outdated features. Value perceptions vary, with reasonable rates for some, but high parking fees for others.

Detailed Reviews
The hotel location is great, and the hotel is nice, overall. Our room had a nice view of the river and was clean and comfortable.
We stayed on a Friday night, and the cleaning staff were vacuuming the hallways outside our room before 9am on Saturday. The walls/doors are thin, so it sounded like they were inside our room. This is too early for a weekend. I feel like the management team should know that guests probably want a quiet weekend morning. Also, there is a loud bell on the elevators that dings every time an elevator arrives on the floor. Since our room was close to the elevators, this was disruptive (again, it was loud enough that it sounded like a kitchen timer going off in our room every few minutes).

I got a room this weekend for my daughter and 1 other dancer that were participating in NUVO. The hotel was busy, but staff was friendly and rooms were clean. The only complaint I have is lack of adequate staffing for the restaurant. There was a bartender and 1 waiter for a crowd of people looking to eat after the dance competition and boat show set-up at 9:00pm. I would have thought they’d be more prepared for the crowd, given lack of food at TCF center. Anyway, tables were filthy, the wait was horrific and prices were high. $110 was a bit much for poor service and quality of food. $20 for a salmon Caesar salad that was all white lettuce and very fishy, and both girls left theirs uneaten! Aside from that, I was pleased with the hotel and the locale

This was my first trip to Detroit with my family for my daughters dance convention. The hotel itself was convenient to the TCF center which was why we stayed there. The price was not worth it though. Even at a group rate I have stayed at more luxorious hotels in Chicago. The valet parking is expensive so beware of it. 35 per day even if you are staying there. The group rate was slightly lower at 25 per day but still per day prices were high and they only take credit or debit. The hotel exterior looks nice but the rooms themselves are oddly shaped to fit the unique exterior. If you get a corner room good luck. They are built all on angles so you end up walking through a small hallway and turning into what would look like a broom closet. The view was nice though of the Detroit River and Canada. Skip their breakfast they offer though. The food is not good, it either sits under a heat lamp for too long or just doesn't taste right. Unfortunately as well there are not many other options for food. Detroit on the weekend pretty much closes down so you only have a handful of restaurants available. Even the Starbucks within the hotel was not fully open. You had to ask the front desk for anything in the cabinet and charge only no cash. On the check out day, Sunday, for the convention which was fairly large they only had two of four elevators working making massive back ups occur and they very limited baggage carts available and very crowded elevators. Also if you ask for late check out your parking will not match it so you may have to pay for a full other day if you do not move your car by 11 even if your check out is at 2. Oh and they will not let you pack up your car early and as well you have to check out to pack up from the valet. The staff though was friendly I will say that. From valet, to front desk to random staff you see in the elevator.

IGH Default & unprofessionalism. Crowne Plaza accepted a contract from a small Travel Company for a group of rooms to attend the AA International Convention between July 1-5 2020 They required a first night deposit from each individual for the room bookings, some people already paid the full amount which was in excess of $1200 for three nights. Once the Convention was canceled due to COVID they have refused to refund the monies that were paid in advance in good faith. After promising a refund in June to the travel agency, they are now not answering calls or returning emails. I would hope this is only a misunderstanding and they plan to rectify the situation shortly.
I am one of those individuals impacted and an IGH member. I will remain optimistic IGH will resolve the situation at the Corporate level since Hotel Management refuses to act responsibly and respond to the repeated inquiries on status.

Used to travel frequently to Detroit for work, but less so frequently now due to Covid. Hotels in Downtown Detroit have a way of filling up very quickly, esp. if there is a convention in town. The location of the hotel is great as it is right by the Riverfront and walkable to many downtown buildings. Crowne Plaza Hotels as a whole are fairly old and this hotel supposedly has had some renovations. The rooms are decently sized, but the bathrooms are far too small. Even standing solo in the bathroom feels like there is not enough space once stepping out of the shower. The hotel walls feel a bit thin too as I could hear the neighbor watching a TV show fairly late at night.
The hotel restaurant is actually fairly good, better than your average hotel restaurant and is not outrageously expensive. The challenge is that even pre-Covid, there are usually so few servers that I'd find myself having to order drinks/food immediately upon sitting down.

My husband and I made reservations with the Fort Ponchartrain Hotel for a Saturday night and a Sunday night. We made the reservations well in advance of our stay. When we arrived at our room, the bed had some kind of a nasty spot on it. The spot looked like blood or coffee. The hotel did nothing to fix this. We also only had 2 towels in our room. On the first night there, we went to the front desk and asked for more towels. We were told that there were no extra towels available because they were being reprocessed. I took that to mean all of the towels were being washed. We were told that towels would be brought to our room as soon as some were available. This did not happen. The next day, we left the sign on our door asking for maid service thinking that clean towels would be placed in our room. That did not happen and the sign had not been touched. When we returned later that afternoon after our event, because we had not received any towels yet, I called guest services and asked for more towels. I was told that they would be brought right up to the room. This did not happen. The next day when we checked out, we were asked how our stay was. I told them about the spot on the sheet/bed and the 3 times we asked for towels and did not receive them. The front desk took my information (email address and phone number) and assured me that my concerns would be escalated to management and that management would surely reach out to me. It has been a week and we have not heard from anyone. While the room wassmall, but okay, the service at the hotel was horrible. You have to pay $14.00 per person for breakfast and $40 per night for parking. Add those costs into the cost of the room and it just isn't a good idea to stay at this hotel. Only God knows what substance was on the bed. I don't know if the service was horrible because we booked via a third party or what the issue was but I would not want to return to this hotel to stay. I do have to say that the valet service for parking was excellent. The breakfast was just okay. If you do decide to stay at this hotel, bring your own towels and anything else you may need (shampoo, soap, conditioner, body lotion) because once you check-in and they have your money, you are nobody.

The hotel looks nice from the outside and the lobby is nice too. Even the view from the room is spectacular. The location is great right across from Hart Plaza. These were the only good things about my stay and the only reason why it gets 3 stars. I stay at cheap low star motels all the time and I hate to say I had a worse experience with this place than most of the lower end motels I stay at.
Check-in took 1 hour. The staff checking people in were trying to find rooms to assign to guests but it was as if they were fighting with each other over holding rooms. They kept telling people there were no rooms available and were trying to find open rooms. It was only 3:45pm. There was no process for handling what seemed like a fully booked hotel (yet there were still plenty of rooms to reserve yet online). The staff seemed overwhelmed and also didn't show any care the entire time.
Later in the day we asked if a double room happened to be available, which it was, but it was dirty. There was no housekeeping staff in the evening so they could only bring up new sheets and towels to change ourselves. It was understandable though I didn't ask for any refund. They did give us a complimentary breakfast.
Valet looked like a nightmare the next morning but I was fortunate enough to have had street parking in front of the hotel.
Overall I had a good time downtown. They need to improve their processes or system. The staff also seemed uncaring of anything.

My wife and I were in Detroit to see the Tigers and Lions over the Sept 10th weekend and chose the Hotel Pontchartrain. Everyone was super nice and the complimentary breakfasts on Saturday, Sunday and Monday was an unexpected surprise. It was very affordable compared to the some of the other hotels that were within walking distance to the stadiums, downtown and the Riverfront. With that said, it's not a 5 star hotel with all the amenities but was decent for the price.

They say you never get a second chance to make a first impression. Ciara, the front desk receptionist, made our check in of seven people to three rooms very seamless, and we’re a very demanding family. She should be highlighted for being patient with all the voices coming her way. Her communication was top notch, and she was so gracious. I felt like we were in the South with all that southern charm, and we travel a lot including internationally. Her parents should be proud because her professionalism was top notch. Thank you Ciara for being a calm during the storm. Oh and the welcome packages - what can I say. The picture says it all. God bless you.

Staying here for business. You could NOT find a more lazy group of people to work what should be your most attentive part of your hotel. THE FRONT!
Stranded and waited to be helped while 2 other counter people said “she’d be right back”
The stand-off nature of the staff was horrible.
Lazy. Lazy. Lazy.

Does the hotel have a singles bar
Hello there-
At this time we do not offer a shuttle service- this may be something we plan later in the year.
This area is relatively safe in the early evening. However if you decide to walk in this area at night I would take standard precautions. Take only what you must have fir the evening, wallet and phone in front pocket, no bags or purses that can easily be snatched, no jewelry, etc. when traveling I always keep a scanned copy of DL and Passport in my iCloud account just in case of theft issues.
No, no shopping center with in walking distance
