Thunder Bay Inn home of Dukes Grill was a great dinner dining experience. Located in the tiny town of Big Bay along the Lake Superior shoreline 30’ west of Marquette. Nice selection of food choices including vegetarian options. Friday Whitefish fish fry was very good. Highly recommend,

Expectations. So many people get ideas in their head and if a place does not match it, well, we all know how that goes. This place is fantastic. Full of history. It is an old wooden building and the owner seems intent on keeping this place as close to original as is possible. Good for him. If you want a hermetically sealed room that isolates you from the world? Don't stay here. If you want wood, lots of wood, this is the place. It is a work I progress, which is fine by me, take your time, make this place shine with its glorious past. The floors creak as you walk, the doors close (and lock) with a bit of play, the beds were comfortable (these have been updated to modern standards), The attached restaurant is great. As far as staff being friendly, yes they are. Take your time, be nice, be interested in this place and its rich history, and the staff will reward you with their own tales of how special this place is. Sit in the fantastic lobby, read, chat with fellow travelers (and staff) as they pass by. The area is a great north woods getaway. Lake Superior beckons for you to gaze across its fast waters. Friendship abounds if you are open to live and learn.

What a GREAT place! Not only is this historic building a beautiful place, the hosts and employees are super. Owners, Sue and Mark, are friendly, hospitable and eager to please in any way they can. The rooms are comfortable and furnished largely with antiques. Check-in was a breeze. The food in the restaurant was all good, especially the blackened whitefish and sweet potato fries. Absolutely a wonderful place to stay.

I hate to give this beautiful, historic inn such a low rating, but two of the female staffers were just so inhospitable towards me that I feel something needs to be said. I arrived in the evening while an event was going on and it was nothing but drunk people stumbling around everywhere. I couldn't access the front porch since there was a band set up there so I went into the restaurant and waited at the hostess stand. After five minutes of not being noticed, I went up to a waitress who was bussing a table, and the second I approached her I could tell I was bothering her. She reluctantly took me to the office to check me in, but with her mumbling and refusal to make eye contact I couldn't understand a word she was saying. She disappeared without a word and another woman (owner's wife) showed up to check me in. She assumed that I didn't have a reservation and acted surprised when I told her I did have one. She then took me up to my room which was supposed to have a queen-sized bed, but it turned out to be a full-sized. The room had no AC unit, but thankfully an electric fan was provided. The ceiling in my room was full of cracks, patches and holes, and the bedspread had several light stains all over it. There is WiFi at the hotel, but I guess you have to ask for the password -- it was never mentioned to me and there are no signs anywhere. There was absolutely no coffee (or water, or anything) set out in the mornings, but I noticed some guests were able to get their coffee...by making a special request. I get it's a two-star hotel in the UP, but that seems like a bare minimum thing to offer your guests. Anyway, on my last day there, I was looking at some of the memorabilia on display when the owner's wife approached me from behind and said 'Hello' to me quite loudly. I turned around and said hello back, and she kept looking at me, so to 'break the ice' I said something like 'just taking one last look at things'. To that she replied: 'Oh, I thought you were looking for something specific', and then just walked away. I was left somewhat dumbfounded by the comment, like did she think I was stealing stuff?? The unfriendly waitress even stopped and looked me over in a concerning manner while I was in the gift shop looking at the hats and T-shirts. A pretty lousy way to treat a guest, especially after having stayed for four nights during peak season. I hope to visit Big Bay again, but will definitely be looking into other lodging options.

My wife and I spent our 60th wedding anniversary at the Thunder Bay Inn. We were given a guided tour of the hotel by the Innkeeper and owner, Mark Bevins. He has great ideas and plans for this site, which we'd like to see in the future. As for the current conditions, with no rooms on the ground floor, an elevator to the second floor would be nice. This would be great for seniors in transporting their luggage. I know that is being planned. Adding a breakfast to the menu would also be a plus.

The new owner really cares about this hotel and is trying to update it. It is a beautiful, historic building. There is some Henry Ford history here too. The restaurant is excellent. The Friday night fish was delicious and it’s a generous meal for the reasonable price. Great staff and cook.

We stayed in the Ford suite. Due to covid concerns, we were the only guests. Gretchen met us warmly, we felt welcome right away. The room is spacious, the windows span two sides of the room so we took full advantage of the heavenly Lake Superior breezes. We both had fish and chips for dinner which were the best fish and chips I have ever had. We loved the Inn; yes, it is not new and it is not chi-chi but oh it makes up for it in comfort and the feeling of being cared for. Loved it.

** Regarding the restaurant only - we didn't stay overnight. ** We stopped in for lunch while snowmobiling. Food was very good, servers were efficient and friendly, and the facility was clean and welcoming. Fireplace was a nice touch. Later in the afternoon, my snowmobile broke down - I asked if I could wait there while my riding partners went back for the trailer. Ended up being way longer than expected, due to add'l unforeseen factors. They were very understanding, hospitable, & helpful. Highly recommend!

Thunder Bay Inn used to be an immaculate and well kept property in the 90s. Nostalgia moved us to book a stay there. Where to begin?? The room was filthy and the air condition unit in the window didn't work. We slept on top of the covers and when we woke in the morning simply packed and went downstairs. There was NO ONE. There was a foul odor that permeated the halls. No coffee, attendants....nothing. Fellow travelers came down and said they had no air and they couldn't find anyone to talk to. We sat on the front porch and watched as approximately 15 rabbits strolled the property that has been allowed sink into such a rough condition. We noticed a 'for sale' sign and hope that someone can restore this getaway to it's former glory. **note the broom just left in the bush in the front of the hotel.
