My daughter and I have been staying at the 1896 house every year for about the last 10 years. We have always enjoyed the Brookside rooms and the atmosphere there. Susan and her partner owned the facility at that time and we never had an issue. About 5 years ago new owners took over the motels. The first time we stayed there with the new owners about 4 years ago our room never got cleaned until almost the end of the day. Three years ago, we had no heat in our room and the owner ended up giving us a space heater in our room. I think that might be illegal in a public motel. We never received an adjustment to our room rate. We decided to stay there again last year and could not believe it; once again NO HEAT! We went to the check in office several times and finally found a note on the door saying the owners were in the Pub watching a hockey game. We finally received yet another space heater. By then it was so cold in our room that we ended up sleeping in our jackets. They acted very upset that we even bothered them. I communicated my disappointment to Kerri when I checked out the next morning and requested an adjustment to my room rate once again. I left my cell phone number and .she said Kennedy would call me. I never received a call from anyone I actually called them three times myself and no one called me back. Believe it or not we gave them another chance and stayed there two weeks ago. We checked into our room and turned on the TV. It was not working. My daughter went down to the front desk and was told by Kennedy hat it was a cable box problem with Spectra and if it did not come on soon, they would send a DVR player to our room. They finally put a sign on the door of the checkin area notifying people that there was no TV. Well, it did not come on for us or any of the other upset customers and was still off the next morning. We further found out that the TV had not been working since Monday. This was Wednesday. The bar area has Direct TV and they had reception. The final blow was we went to get ice for the leftover food we had and the ice maker was not working. The woman at the front desk said it stopped working because it was too warm out. SERIOUSLY????? She walked over to the bar and got us a bucket of ice. When I checked out, I told the person at the front desk, who I assumed was the owner that I will never come back there again. No heat for 2 years and then no TV and no ice. I told her there were never issues when Susan owned the property. She said "There are always issues". She is arguing with a dissatisfied customer? I told her I expected and adjustment once again on my charge. She said she would have Kennedy call me when she came in. I just told her not to bother because neither Kennedy or anyone else ever calls back. These people just don't care. Then in reading other reviews there were people that did not have TV reception back in April. Is the cable bill just not being paid? It is too bad that such a comfortable facility that was so enjoyable to stay at years ago has turned into such a disaster. I will be finding other lodging next year in the Williamstown area.

Dear Never Again, Thanks for the note. I want to clarify that you did not say in the Luxury Suites but in a room with double beds on Brookside. The 1896 House has been the same country cozy accommodations each year regardless of the ownership and many upgrades to the property have taken place that you may not be aware of but we would be happy to discuss them with you. Firstly, the cable on the property went out for less than 24 hours and you were made aware of that upon check-in. There are a few things out of our control and that is cable connection. We have had issues in the past with Spectrum (not Spectra) cable boxes and this was the first outage. Since you mentioned about paying bills....It's none of your business, but our bills are not only paid but done early. I give kudos to the cable company for being able to get service back so quickly. I do recall an individual in your room indicating she had a computer in which to watch movies. The cable company was notified and within 24 hours was able to fix the problem and have all televisions in service. The front desk offered you a DVD player or to watch TV at the restaurant on the property (The '6 House Pub) since the cable service at the pub is different than the rooms. If you wanted the DVD player, the front desk would have been more than happy to provide you one but you did not request one after you were made aware of the availability. The sign on the door was posted to let late check-ins know about the cable issue while everyone who checked in during office hours was verbally told. Frankly, Since you seem to like to compare the previous owners operations, they completely turned off the heat during June, July and August. We have not done that and upon inspection of your room the temperature was 70 degrees. The beds have quilts, comforters, and bedspreads if you needed to be warmer. The wooden box heaters are always available and were available more than 5 years ago for those who require heat in the summer time. Because the heat is still on sometimes the room with the ice machine gets to hot and we apologize that ice wasn't available from the machine at that moment but a staff member immediately went to get you ice. The problem was resolved quickly. But you still weren't happy and appeared to be that way from the beginning. Despite our attempts to accommodate your needs, you continued to disrespect our staff during your stay. The 1896 House will always continue to provide a comfy, cozy atmosphere and provide our guests with excellent service. Good luck to you in your travels and good luck to the places you stay in if a cable outage is considered a disaster.

This was a pleasant surprise! Beautiful surroundings, comfortable and charming rooms, delicious food (and great beer on tap!) at the restaurant. Looking forward to staying here again. Highly recommended.

We had a great stay in one of the Barnside suites. The room was clean, the bed was comfortable and the decor of the suite matched the country side atmosphere of the Berkshires. The grounds are so well kept and the footbridge with the crystal clear water running under it was very relaxing and refreshing to see and hear. The staff cleaned our suite in a timely manner, always smiling and asked us how our stay was going and to let them know if we needed anything. Our children had a great time also. The breakfast had plenty to choose from for all ages (even for kids that are picky eaters) and was very good. Thank you 1896 for making our long weekend in the Berkshires special and comfortable. We will be back soon!!

We drew Room #13, we should have known. I thought the room would be grander based on the pictures on the website and price. The double queen rooms at the Poolside are not fancy: look carefully at the pictures & descriptions. Our room was average 80's decor. The TV did not work the first night. Though the inn knew about it they did not communicate info proactively. The breakfast had great potential - it was at a restaurant and the atmosphere was classic farmhouse: it had a range of store bought options. But, what we eyed was the eggs and bacon. Unfortunately, both the eggs and bacon were a lowest grade possible. By 5 PM our room had not been cleaned, beds made or towels changed. I was disappointed with this two day stay. I don't tend to post poor reviews, but in this case, I think this institution could benefit from some constructive feedback and a manager who will redouble his or her efforts to ensure rooms are cleaned on time, appliances work upon arrival (or offer an upfront explanation), and take the time to taste the non-starch breakfast items. There are much better alternatives for lodging in Williamstown for those looking for a mid-range option.

Dear We drew Room #13, We appreciate your feedback. Firstly, this review is on Barnside Luxury Suites and your stay was on Pondside. Not to mention the deeply discounted spring weekend rate in a country, cozy room that included free wifi, full hot buffet breakfast each night, discounts to The '6 House Pub and more. Perhaps you were confused on which property you stayed on therefore expecting a different decor and breakfast. Each luxury suite has a different “period” personality and is furnished with many hand chosen antiques. The romantic beds are all pillow topped, and most have canopies or 4 posts. There is a large dressing room that opens up to a spacious bathroom complete with showers and dual whirlpool tubs. A full country candlelight breakfast is provided. With advance notice, we are happy to accommodate special dietary restrictions such as “low carb”, “low fat”, vegetarian”, etc. and of course any food allergies. Please do look at our website as the pictures for Brookside/Pondside depict exactly what each and every room look like country and cozy not 80's decor. The delightful “mountain cabin” character of the rooms, lattice footbridges, perennial gardens and rocking chairs along the porch will remind you of days gone by…… Appreciating the quality appointments of Cushman rock maple furniture, Waverly-Schumacher designs, and all the upscale amenities that distinguish your accommodations. The wooden walls that emanate that pine aroma is what our guests repeatedly tell us brings them back! There is a comforting “retro” feeling here, in a place that resists change…a definitive option among the cookie cutter chain properties of today! We spoke with you the night your television stopped working and told you that spectrum would be onsite the next morning to fix the cable box and that is exactly what happened. Spectrum arrived in the early am the next day and your television/cable was fixed. There are some things out of our control and cable boxes are one of them. We would have been happy to move you to another room with a working television/cable box but said you were fine with cable being fixed the next morning. A full hot buffet breakfast is included each day during your stay! We are delighted you enjoyed the atmosphere of the Publick Room where breakfast is served. Your opinion about breakfast is quite shocking as the variety of options is plentiful. Our food comes from the largest food distributors (not store bought options!) the United States and cooked by professional chefs. The full hot buffet breakfast has a variety of bagels, bread, jams, cream cheese, yogurt (toppings of chia, flax, cranraisins, and granola), oatmeal, Coffee (regular/Decaf), Teas, Juices, muffins, cereals (fruit loops, cheerios, raisin bran, rice krispies), eggs, bacon, waffle machine and pancake machine (maple syrup, wild blueberry syrup, toppings that include chocolate chips, caramel bits, and andes mint bits). I would say that is more than just basic and low grade! We do take the time to taste breakfast as we help ourselves every morning and find the quality superb. Our housekeepers are tirelessly working to clean rooms and tidy them in a timely manner. Indeed, your room did get tidied but not in the timeframe you preferred. We will work with the housekeepers on time management and prioritizing to be as efficient as possible. Again, We thank you for your feedback as we are always looking to improve our staff and service. We look forward to seeing you again in the future.

My fiancee and I found this quaint motel years ago and have been coming back a half dozen times a year. The attraction is retro charm.Owners Mike,Carrie, two sons and staff are always friendly and helpful. The rooms are clean, comfortable we have stayed in most of them over the years. The 6 House Pub food is sooooo delicious, staff waiters and waitresses are always cordial and warm. My family and I celebrated my 70th birthday, rented 5 rooms and large party in lounge second to none celebration. People should stop complaining and enjoy life.
