Party of six. Not as good as it used to be. Turkey dark meat was dry. Squash peel in the squash. One person had scallops and got sick. Clam chowder not as good as it was (tough gritty clams). We used to go out of our way to stop there when we were passing through. No more.
I stayed here with my mom this week. It took us three tries to find the check in area. Then we were given a map to our room, which took another 3 tries to find. The room was clean and comfortable. Be aware that there are a lot of stairs and the walkways a bit difficult for older people with some balance issues. We went to dinner in Ebeneezer Tavern. The food was delicious.
This place has a lot of issues. First, from the photos you expect a quaint New England experience in a largish, historic hotel. This is such a building, but if there are rooms in it, I have no idea. We were lodged in heinous 1970s motel-style buildings behind the cute buildings in the photos. The rooms are old and poorly maintained with obnoxiously loud AC units. The hot water is erratic and turns on and off in the middle of your shower multiple times. There is no mini-fridge. There is no room-service - that is to say, they do not clean the rooms during your stay. When I asked them about it, they took an offended and stand-offish tone, telling me that this fact was disclosed in the check-in documentation ... as if admitting the fact that you suck in the small print of a check-in document makes up for the fact that you suck. I did manage to get fresh towels about 2 hours after they were requested. There is an on-site restaurant that gets good reviews, but it closes at 7PM - what kind of restaurant serving dinner closes at 7PM? Certainly not one that any reasonable person will be able to try. All in all, this hotel is yet another overpriced Sturbridge-area disappointment riding on the coat-tails of the Brimfield antique market.…
Dirty, tired, outdated place. Broken lamp so it was dark entering the room. Dirty bathroom. Horrible pillows. No lock on screen door. Outdated. Terrible free breakfast. I was shocked as the reputation is for a nice country style inn. It is a motel. Maybe the main part of the Inn is better? I don't know, but the back buildings - nope!
we booked and arrived late. Told not crowded but sent on a long walk up and down and up and down stairs to room. Be prepared if you have significant luggage. Then the phone rang once an hour for four hours during our short overnight stay. The front desk said it was an internal call but they couldn’t do anything. We didn’t want to unplug phone in case of emergency but eventually did. Room could use quite a bit of updating to get to rustic. The complimentary baked goods in the morning were very good. So that was very good :).
Tried to get a drink in the bar at 8:10pm. Was told they closed at 8 and no! We said we were staying and couldn’t they just charge our rooms NO Next morning tried to get breakfast but restaurant didn’t open until 11am! Poor service!! Rooms just 0K.
We had very comfortable and spacious accommodations in the motor lodge, but the highlight for us was the restaurant: the Ebenezer Tavern. We were visiting during the May Brimfield show and the place was very busy. Despite the hectic pace for the servers we were very impressed with the staff. Emily, the bartender, was professional, friendly, and never appeared rattled. She made us feel very welcomed and we can't wait to see her again in July. Ben was our server and he was THE BEST! He navigated through the dining area of the tavern anticipating our needs. How he managed to take care of the many tables he had, I'll never understand. He was efficient and a delight to speak with, as well. Clearly, the restaurant has a well-trained staff of smart and professional servers. Thank-you!…
This is our go to hotel when we visit our grand kids. Which is about once a year. We love the historic old stage stop main building. But we stay in one of the more newer buildings built in the same style. Checkin was easy and efficient. Parking was also easy and we parked within 10 feet of the building. This was good as we were here for five days. Room was clean and up to date. We had a nice walk-in shower, refrigerator, microwave and security safe. Only security issue is the doors to the building are unlocked until late at night so anyone can walk in. The bake shop offers a nice variety of bakery items which we enjoyed each morning. There is a nice dining room which at this time serves lunch and dinner but definitely recommend making a reservation. For Mother’s Day they had a wonderful buffet. Although we ate way too much. Hope to be back again next year.…
We (M-F couple, 50s) spent one night in the "Historic Inn" section of the Publick House on our way to an event in the Boston area. As others have said, the historic inn is a charming delight for lovers of New England antiquity. The wide floorboards creak, the beams are fully exposed, the plumbing can be a bit slow to respond, and the steps and winding hallways are not for everyone. If old and authentic is your speed, you will feel at home here. If not, look elsewhere. Also important: the "Motor Lodge" buildings are an entirely different proposition. They look like the kind of motel where rooms are rented by the half-hour. The only guests I can imagine wanting to occupy those rooms would be people attending an event at the inn who don't want to drive after partying into the night. I guess if you're drunk enough, a bed is a bed. Breakfast for overnight guests is a bit of a jumble, since the bakeshop does a thriving business with non-guests. Just show the bakeshop staff your key card, and they'll tell you your options. Good coffee and excellent baked goods are included, though avoiding gluten might be a challenge.…
We LOVED this place! Granted my criteria for a hotel room is not the same as others - I prefer character over amenities and am happy to sacrifice having a rain shower head and a mini-fridge. We stayed in the historic inn and found our queen room exceptionally charming. The floors are creaky, it has radiator heat, and a small bathroom, but it was perfect for us. We didn't even turn on the television the entire time! The bed was exceptionally comfortable, the staff was incredible, and the bakery is *chef's kiss*. We only ate one night in the restaurant but it was wonderful! Our server was fantastic and the lobster mac & cheese appetizer was exceptional. We'll be staying here whenever we come back to Old Sturbridge Village.
