Booked a room in the Painted Lady building and could not have been more disappointed. From the website pictures and reviews, I was really looking forward to a lovely weekend--especially for $300 a night. We walked in, and the room looked lovely. As we both settled back onto the bed, it made sounds like it was going to disintegrate. A quick inspection found that a queen sized bunkie board had been wedged into a full sized bed frame... Seemed silly as a bigger bedframe shouldn't be an unwieldy investment, but we giggled at the quirkiness and didn't give it another thought, as we were then struck buy the fact that the entire room was damp... The bedding was damp, the curtains were damp... With the air conditioner on, it was just cold and wet. This was most likely due to the stepped up cleaning because of of Covid. But, one would think they would have the forsight to let the room dry before being inhabited. When using the bathroom, I quickly learned that no matter how gently you pulled in the toilet paper, the entire holder would fall off the wall... Another quirk but not earth shatteringly bad. We had dinner at the Burger Bar, and although the burgers were overpriced for no reason--nothing special to the meat and the toppings were scant, our waitress was amazing and friendly. As we retired back to our room, and climbed into our wet bed, we shivered and find that it appeared the duvet cover was ripped and the inner duvet had a nasty looking old, brown stain. The duvet seemed to be weighted to an uncomfortable degree. We closed our eyes looking for a quiet night's sleep when we discovered an unfortunate pattern. While the restaurant was being closed or opened each day, we were treated to very loud banging sounds both above and below us that literally made the furniture in our room shake for roughly 30mins to an hour each morning and night. So much so that our sleep schedule was dictated by the sounds of the restaurant staff. After the cacophony and shaking subsided, we spent a sleepless shivering in our cold, damp bed. The next morning we went for a nice walk on the beach and returned mid-afternoon for a nap to make up for the lack of sleep the previous night. As we settled into our finally dry bed, we noticed loud music being played outside. We went to make sure all of our windows were closed and going that the bathroom window doesn't close at all. Unable to sleep, I decided to check for someplace to go nearby. Pulling out my phone, I discovered that the "free wi-fi" was slower than the spotty cell phone coverage. We went to dinner at the restaurant that night at the Abbey for dinner. The food was meh, but the waitress was again amazing. We went back to our room and waited to be permitted to sleep. After the bang I ng stopped, the music was turned off, and the employees stopped yelling to each other, we settled on for another sleepless night. In the morning, we realized we didn't know what time checkout was. We looked over the papers we were given, but it wasn't listed not on the website. Upon calling the number we were given upon check-in ("Call for absolutely anything"), we were treated to an angry sounding voice that made it clear that asking what time checkout was is not a good reason to call. Feeling rather unwelcome at the inn, we brushed it off and went for the complimentary breakfast. Our unsmiling waiter brought us our rather Spartan breakfast that included no choice of sides--I got a waffle with old, squishy strawberries on top and we were given one pat of butter to share between us. There was no offering of bacon, sausage, etc. We were not offered a refill on coffee or tea. As soon as we were done, we checked out happy to be leaving. Honestly, the whole ordeal felt stressful instead of restfull and made me feel taken advantage of. I could have had a fully functional, quieter room, and better breakfast at a second rate hotel chain for a lot less money. The next day we went for a nice walk on the beach and headed back to the inn for a nap too make

Response from Chris Wilson, Owner at Belfry Inn and Bistro
Responded Sep 4, 2020
Thank you for your feedback and your unfortuante experience. We only wish upon checking in you felt the room "wet" or even after one night you would have said something and we would have found another room. The A/C is on full last as its a very humid hot summer ( drought) and we aire to a colder room. We have not receved any sort of noise complaint in that room but will ascertain exactly what the employees are doing. The phone number you speak of is available 24 hours and we only ask that you call the desk so we can respondImmediately. It is especially frustrating for us that we are NOT allowed to enter the room after check in to do our usual turn down and daily cleaning. We will do IF allowed by the guest. This is stated by the front desk agent when checking in and going through the COVID info. We specifically mention that we WANTto be to do our usual activities but due to COVID we rely on the guest to call the front desk and give us permission. If something was said at breakfast we would have responded Immediately. Our breakfast in particular are complimentary. You are welcome to ask for a side of bacon as is done often, especially with waffles. People ask for sides of potatoes or change the cheddar to another cheese. It is very common you just have to ask. Please feel free to contact us directly so we can at least assist you financially. This type of review only further hurts our business and is the last thing we want at this time of economic turmoil. Thank you.

The interior is so pretty, and the outdoor dining on the lawn looks lovely. The staff works very hard to manage the larger COVID footprint with tables indoors and all round outdoors, so expect service to be a little on the slow side. Drinks are well-made. The salmon preparation that has a sweetness that is quite delicious.

My wife and I had the worst dinner from start to finish. I had octopus for appetizer it was under cooked and was like a piece of rubber. My Duck was deep fried and all grease. I couldn't eat any of it. My wifes Tuna was so soft that she couldn't cut it with her knife and had all veins running through it. We couldn't wait to leave. We sat outside and really enjoyed the atmosphere. But the food was horrible. I wouldn't eat there for free. I hope this review gets the restaurant back on track. Sorry to say that the server wasn't any better

There are two fine dining restaurants in the world that I would eat at during this COVID-19 time, and one of them is the Belfry Inn. We did the overnight package with the Wine Wednesday package which included dinner and a bottle of wine from a special wine list, overnight stay in any room, and breakfast. They offer outside dining, in front of the building and under an open-sided tent on the side. Tables are spaced at least 6 feet apart, and I felt safe at the generous distance apart. Servers were masked. You need to wear a mask when you walk around, but you can remove it at the table. The ahi tuna appetizer was so fresh and delicious complemented by the seasoned slaw and ginger. My husband enjoyed the fresh salmon, and I had the two duck legs with pommes frites/french fries. For breakfast, we got the feta cheese omelette and buttermilk waffles with strawberries and whipped cream. We stayed in our favorite room the Saturday room in the Abbey which has a jacuzzi tub with remote control in the bedroom with Archangel Michael overlooking the room. There is shampoo, but I remembered to bring our own bath salts/bubbles this time. There is a balcony overlooks the outside dining and the parking lot, so you can watch people walk in. The room was spacious and had two leather chairs. The room also had a shower and a sink with room for toiletries. There are two flights of stairs to walk up to the rooms. The Sunday door opens to a flight of stairs which is easier to take your luggage straight down to the parking lot, instead of around to the front of the building then to the parking lot. For COVID-19, they spend three times a much time cleaning the room, they use a ultraviolet light sanitizer plus allow a day between guest to air it out. Staff wear masks and the doors to the inside of the restaurant are open and allow air flow. The Belfry Inn location is very convenient in town with stores and other informal restaurants in the same block. You are walking distance to the free spring water that is down by the church and mill. Bring your own container or drink from the always running, cold water. We love Belfry Inn and Bistro, and it is one of our favorite places in the world. Where else, can you have dinner and sleep in a former Catholic church with the beautiful stained glass or be served a drink from the liquor cabinet former confessional booth. The ceiling are tall and soaring. It is truly a special place. Celebrate the Belfry Inn's 25th anniversary this year by a stay and or dinner there. You will see why it has received the Trip Advisor Certificate of Excellence for so many years. Chris, the owner, innkeeper, and person who is always there has done an exceptional job in continuing to create an exceptional and safe experience well worth the visit.

My husband and I can not remember how we celebrated our 51st and 52nd Wedding Anniversaries, but we will never forget our 53rd where we stayed in the Tuesday Room at the Abbey. The unique church theme and architecture, the amenities in the room, the location in historic Sandwich, and the included ample breakfast all make this a very special place. The owner pays strict attention to all details, both those inside as well as the lawns and gardens. Having read reviews prior to making our reservation, we anticipated a 5-star stay and our expectations were met.
