We have stayed here twice, prepandemic and during. The location is amazing, overlooking the Atlantic with a huge, naturally landscaped yard that goes down to the edge of the ocean (you are standing on a rocky bluff looking down - no direct access to the water). It's a very quiet, tranquil spot and we mainly sat and watched the water.
This is a very old inn. Most of the rooms are pretty small, but spotlessly clean and the beds are incredibly comfortable. The second visit we splurged and stayed in one of the 4th floor Queen sized rooms with a small enclosed balcony that overlooks the ocean. Worth every penny. There are some minor inconveniences that come with staying in a hotel that is 150 years old. Sound can carry strangely so you may hear other guests in their rooms and there are a lot of stairs. But, you stay here to get away from hustle and bustle and for the view.
Because of the pandemic the dining room has limited options for meals and it is advisable to make reservations for all meals. They have fresh pastries in the early morning in the lobby and coffee stations on the different floors. There was no in room housekeeping service due to Covid, but it was easy to get anything you needed. The staff and management are doing their best under difficult circumstances and a little patience and understanding goes a long way. They bent over backwards to accommodate all guests and we had a wonderful time.

Having a car works best here. It's a short drive to many beautiful spots (Halibut Point, Good Harbor Beach, Rockport center). There are also quite a few good restaurants to check out. There is a narrow walking trail that hugs the coast that is right behind the hotel. Unfortunately due to massive rain a good sized section of it was too marshy for our footwear so we did not make it far.
Both visits were great and we will be back. Eating meals on the huge porch and watching the fishing boats go by was a lovely experience and we even had a surprise visit by a red fox that was checking out the yard at dawn and dusk. The management and staff are friendly and helpful. Special call out to Cameron, a young man that runs the dining room in the morning and went out of his way to get to know all the guests and make sure their meal was as enjoyable as possible. The general manager, Candace, was also warm and helpful. Not a hip, party place. A place to unwind and enjoy the natural beauty of the area.

Our family of four had a wonderful time at the Emerson Inn. It is a gorgeous, historic property with beautiful views of the water, nicely maintained grounds, and a very nice swimming pool.

The restaurant was not back to full service (from Covid changes), but the limited menu was very nice and we enjoyed having a drink each evening out on the Adirondack chair by the fire tables, looking out over the water.

The service was not as seamless as some experiences we've had at high end inns and hotels. There were some hiccups here and there... However, the owner, managers, and staff were friendly and attentive and took good care of us whenever we needed anything. The service felt very personal and warm.

The rooms are not as impeccably appointed as other stays we've had at this price point, but they are clean and attractive and the beds very comfortable... Also, the room comes with a very generous breakfast that includes eggs, pancakes, an omelette, etc.

It was great to have such a nice experience in a historic inn as they can often be a bit staid and/or musty. The Emerson Inn felt fresh and well cared for. We would definitely stay here again!

Response from KImberly Voltero, Owner at Emerson Inn By The Sea

Thank you very much for taking the time to write a review. Our staff truly loves what they do, and I am glad that shows. We continue our search for more great people and have adjusted some of our amenities (switched to a salt water pool, added to our restaurant menu, installed local art) based on feedback from guests like you. I hope you will visit again, and have a chance to enjoy our little gem as we continue to polish this spectacular property.

This was our third visit and we will be back again over the summer. Our room was upgraded to ocean views as we celebrated our anniversary during our stay. Our hosts Kimberly and Bart made us feel right at home. Candice is friendly and accommodating and made us feel more like family than guests. Her son Kamron works in the dining room is attentive to every detail. Bill and Janice at the bar are wonderful. The breakfasts here are fabulous as are the evening meals. They have a new chef, Napoleon. I am not sure why anyone would eat anywhere else. It was a quiet and relaxing few days!! I highly recommend the Inn!! Thank you to everyone for making our stay so very enjoyable!!

My wife and I spent 2 amazing days relaxing and enjoying the ocean views. I can not say enough about the courteous and attentive staff -everyone seemed to have one goal, to make our stay pleasant and memorable. We stayed in a tastefully appointed 2nd floor room and the staff retrieved our luggage from our rental car and brought it up stairs for us As displaced (50 years) North Shore citizens, we enjoyed reminiscing and reliving memories of Cape Ann from our younger days. I must say that the lobster and fried clams were as delicious as we remembered but a lot more expensive! I would recommend a stay at the Emerson Inn for anyone who wants to relax in a scenic setting.

Our family of 5 split into two rooms on the 3rd and 4th floors and we all loved the rooms, the Inn itself, the location and especially the warm and friendly staff. This is not some corporate type lodging but rather an independent property run by very caring and attentive people. The owners are on-site, totally hands on and managing all of the operations with what I am sure are very long hours yet they are still warm and friendly leaving you feeling welcomed and they are genuinely grateful for their guests. This historic restored property is really gorgeous inside and out however, don't expect things like an elevator to get you to the upper floors. We were offered assistance with luggage but we are a D.I.Y. sort of family so it was no problem at all. The food service at the Inn is a work in progress with only a limited breakfast offering during our stay but we feel confident as this evolves it will become just as enjoyable as everything else the Inn has to offer. Thank you again for a wonderful stay, we will definitely be back!

It was like stepping back in time. Lovely rambling wooden white hotel, a pillared porch with rocking chairs overlooking a lawn and ocean. The common rooms are lovely, large and well appointed with a modern touch that surprisingly works really well. The walls are filled with the works of local artists. There are 36 rooms over three floors so you will have to climb stairs to your room. There are no elevators but the staff is happy to help carry your luggage if you need it. We were on the 4th floor and had an enclosed balcony with two sitting chars and a magnificent view of the ocean. The balcony doors slid open if you wanted fresh air but could be closed if you preferred air conditioning. From check in to check out staff were helpful and friendly.

Like many places, The Emerson cannot find enough help so be patient and remember this is the seaside and you are on vacation. Where the shortness of staff was most noticeable was at breakfast. However, the two servers/hosts were efficient and hauling. We chose to acknowledge we were alive, sitting outside on a lovely day looking at the ocean, so relaxed and enjoyed the moment.

There is currently no restaurant on site due to lack of chefs but they do have a lounge/bar menu that is substantial and varied. Breakfast includes scrambled eggs with cream cheese & chives; a yogurt with fresh fruit & granola; oatmeal and a daily special. One day it was blueberry pancakes (although it was a bit hard to find the blueberries) and the second day was a Belgium waffle with homemade whipped cream which was wonderful. They have one meat choice a day (ours was bacon which was perfectly cooked). The meal comes with coffee/tea/juice as well as fresh fruit (and it is fresh) as well as choice of breads.

The inn was impeccably clean; bathrobes were provided as well as towels for the pool. "Bottled" water supplied in each room. Beds were comfortable.

You can walk to Pigeon Cove (5 minutes) and Halibut Point (30 minutes). Rockport is a 10-15 minute drive and Annisquam Light House the same in the opposite direction.

We loved our stay and could definitely go back.

This is the third time we have booked the entire Inn for our annual alumni retreat and the Emerson team provided their consistently excellent, friendly service and outstanding food. This year, their efforts were especially remarkable given the challenges all hospitality operations have had in restoring staffing and operations after COVID. The view of the ocean provides a peaceful and relaxing setting on Massachusetts' "Other Cape", Cape Ann, as well as easy access to nature walks and the beautiful Shalin Liu Performance Center in charming downtown Rockport. The is an historic Inn where transcendentalists Emerson and Thoreau escaped the confines of Boston summers. My favorite feature is the row of old fashioned rocking chairs on the porch overlooking the ocean. The public spaces have been tastefully updated under the new management and the lodging rooms, each different, are an appealing classic alternative to the boring cookie cutter sameness of big chain hotels (I know, I worked for one for 35 years). Yes, you'll have your hair dryer and LED TV but the extremely comfortable bed, plush towels and window views are key.

The Emerson Inn is a tranquil beautiful Inn with stunning ocean front views with an entire staff that is friendly and welcoming who makes you feel at home. The outdoor pool sits on the ocean edge where you can swim & relax. The large front lawn has corn hole, Adirondack chairs and fire pits. The made to order breakfast each morning was delicious and served with a smile. Our room was well equipped and loved the cookies left on our bed. The coffee, tea and pastries served in the gorgeous grand room were a nice touch and just sitting on the expansive front porch with a drink from the bar was a treat in itself! Thank you for making our stay so relaxing we can not wait to return!

Our stay at the Emerson Inn was absolutely wonderful from start to finish. The property is elegant, beautiful and very well maintained. The view of the ocean from the huge back porch is spectacular. Great spot to enjoy a cocktail in the evening or to relax with a good book in one of the porch rocking chairs. Must mention that all of the staff members we interacted with were wonderful - professional, accommodating and very knowledgeable about local restaurants, etc. One night, we got to watch the Oscar winning movie "Coda" (filmed locally) on their big screen in the lower level game room after returning back from exploring Rockport & Gloucester. Thanks again to our hostess who set this up for us.
Overall this was a great change from the hotels that we usually stay at. A wonderful welcoming atmosphere - highly recommend!

We were pleasantly impressed with the new decor. Our room had a king four poster bed that was extremely comfy with pillows that were dreamy. We slept so comfortably. Very quiet during the night. The staff was so attentive, even the owner, Kimberly, is very hands-on and can be seen right along the staff to attend to customers. They are bringing back the food service and the new chef is preparing some delicious options. We enjoyed some of the best clam chowder and another time devoured the “chips and dip”. He made his own chips and a decadent onion dip which was perfect! The bar staff will keep you happy and don’t forget the complimentary breakfast , you can enjoy it on the veranda with a gorgeous ocean view. This is a three story building with no elevator….if you have stair issues, let them know. There are rooms on the first floor too.
