We had an incredible experience staying at the Shirakaba Guest House to celebrate our fifth wedding anniversary! Louise is such a warm, attentive host and goes out of her way to make every detail special and personalized. She bought pineapple juice (my wife's favorite) to serve with breakfast, hung celebratory decorations throughout the house, and made endless delicious baked goods (personalized with our favorite ingredients) which we got to enjoy throughout the stay and take home with us (a major upgrade from desserts typically available at ryokans in Japan). Not to mention the numerous homemade ice cream/sorbet flavors (including a magically creamy yet fiery wasabi) and her famous sticky bits! Sadao's sushi roll class and traditional Japanese breakfasts were also major highlights. We loved enjoying our favorite elements of Japanese culture while relaxing and taking in the beautiful fall foliage at this hidden Berkshire gem. We will be sure to return if Louise and Sadao decide to come out of retirement. Thanks for an amazing stay!!

Last month, my boyfriend surprised me with a weekend stay at Berkshires Shirakaba Guest House for our dating anniversary of five years. I am a month late in writing this review, but I have now finally found time and I have so many wonderful things to say about Shirakaba. As soon as we arrived, there was a 'happy anniversary' sign hanging up at the front door, and we had home-made chocolate chip cookies waiting for us in our very cozy room (Louise even made two separate batches, one regular batch for my boyfriend, and one whole wheat batch for me, honoring my food restrictions). We had a (four? five?) course meal, plus dessert, and everything was absolutely delicious. Louise baked us a cake in celebration of our anniversary, and Sadao wrote "congratulations on your five year anniversary" along with our names, all in Japanese, and in icing on the top. They even let us cut our cake with the cake knife from their own wedding! It is also worth mentioning that the sesame seed ice cream is to die for. The traditional Japanese breakfast served the morning after was just as tasty, and Louise's sticky-bits are phenomenal. We got to paint on our own mugs and plate, and take home these lovely mementos. Louise is such a warm and genuine individual. She made us feel comfortable immediately upon our arrival, and she tended to every small need of ours. She even offered to drive us to the ski lodge, and to sew my mitten, which had a pre-existing hole in it! She did so as we painted our mugs. Talking with her was such pleasant conversation, and she was truly interested in our responses. Sadao was quieter, but he actively participated in everything––decorating our cake, decorating our plate, cooking our traditional Japanese dinner (which was truly so good, I still dream of it), and listening patiently and intently as my boyfriend talked passionately about his hobby. Our bed was so comfortable, and we loved our Japanese toilet (bidet, heat seat, and all)! We definitely will be visiting Shirakaba again, and I really cannot wait. Thank you, Louise and Sadao, for everything. What a personalized, romantic, relaxing, and cozy stay!

We are SO glad you enjoyed your stay with us! We really doLove taking care of our guests and giving them as mush space as they'd like or visit if they want to. We did enjoy learning about Demitri's passion for car racing. And he had the neatest heated jacket!! We love learning about new things! I am glad you took advantage of our gift offer of a plate and bowl to decorate or have Sadao help decorate to take home. We used to only offer mugs but as guests come more than once we now have small or large plates, bowls or the original mugs you can decorate! Sadao's cooking is wonderful and sukiyaki out of his Mom's 60+ year old sukiyaki pan makes it special as well. It has become our most chosen main course of our 6 course dinner option. I like to offer minor mending services to our guests :-) Thank you so much for taking the time to write us a review!

The Shirakaba Guest House went above and beyond in terms of hospitality and service! Both Louise and Sadao were amazing hosts and were so friendly. The location is amazing and secluded, away from city noise, where you can be with your thoughts and relax. The history in the building of Shirakaba guest house is incredible. The rooms were incredibly comfy. The Japanese breakfasts and dinner was amazing! I can't wait to make go again! Plus, you can't beat homemade cookies!

This guest house is a truly unique experience because 1) you feel transported to Japan and 2) how attentive Louise and Sadao are attending to every detail of their guests stay and experience. It was a wonderful treat! Pre-stay, Louise will contact you to ask about your preferences and requests. It's very clear that she and Sadao truly enjoy caring for their guests. Upon arrival, prepare to be spoiled! Warm cookies awaited us, and we enjoyed a tour of the house and facilities. Our room was clean and very comfortable, and had an adjoining room with tatami mat floors. Louise stocks the fridge with your beverages of choice, and Japanese snacks. The bathroom also includes a Japanese toilet! (If you have ever visited Japan or seen the film "Why Him?", you will understand how fantastic these are!) There is an indoor lap pool, sauna, and jacuzzi tub, which we enjoyed, and the grounds are also beautiful with a koi pond and fountain, and stunning views of the Berkshires. The food here is AMAZING!!! The Japanese breakfast was the BEST breakfast I have ever eaten at a B&B, and Louise's "sticky bits" are fantastic too. Also, be sure to arrange for dinner there one night - you do not want to miss Sadao's authentic, homestyle cooking. We enjoyed the sukinaki soup for two, along with several other courses, and it was all delicious! Also, they make their own ice cream, with some very unique flavors (like wasabi and black sesame.) We definitely had leftovers to bring home, along with cookies and treats! The guest house is in close proximity to Williamstown and not far from Lenox, and there are lots of opportunities for hiking and outdoor activities as well as shopping, performances, and museums. Plenty of restaurants in the area too. I highly recommend a stay here, and we definitely plan to return for a visit in the future!
