Too terrible for words!! A complete shambles. We took a group of more than forty people to this hotel and booked it two years in advance for a very substantial amount of money. Two years ago, when first inspected, though it was tired at the edges, it had willing and attentive staff. Upon arrival about two years later nearly all the staff had gone. My forty middle-aged clients had to carry their own bags to the rooms, with no elevator, since the staff on hand (what there were of them) were elderly ladies. One young man was asked by the GM to help and his reply was "my time is up". The rooms are shabby to the extent that they are in a complete and utter state of disrepair. Several rooms did not even have hot water for the guests. The GM kept insisting it was a five star Relais & Châteaux property and we shall make a full complaint to Relais & Châteaux also! At dinner, the wine we selected was switched for an inferior year without informing us. When we discovered this, the sommelier claimed that the wine we had selected was unavailable in sufficient quantity. This was a complete fabrication, as we discovered plenty of it in the wine cellar. With room, tax and service, the price is around 1,000 USD per day; this was daylight robbery. It was not up to the standard of a good bed and breakfast. The day we checked in, the management contract changed without our knowledge and the hotel basically ground to a complete halt. Breakfast could not be served to all guests, due again to lack of staff. It was shameful and disgraceful!! Many of our guests were so deeply upset that they demanded refunds and the new owners company blamed the former owners entirely for the terrible let down of staff and services. An extract of the correspondence is below. This property should be closed immediately and not reopened till several millions have been invested. We are all incenced by the lack of interest by any of the management, old or new. The only compensation management offered was a miserable 4.3% of our total invoice. They also offered a one-night stay at Blantyre for each of the 20 couples after the hotel had been renovated. However, as virtually all our guests live in Europe or Asia, this was completely unappealing. In any case, none of them ever wants to visit Blantyre again. New management said the following "While I understand your position, and have transmitted same to the owner of the property, we feel that the compensation offered is sufficiently generous for what amounts to a bad arrival and a bad breakfast. The property has not changed since I visited it two years ago when its indeed charming but tired. We are offering a return visit, under OHM management and after renovations and all I can do is assure you that our properties are run to a very high standard. I am not going to be held accountable for a hotel that I didn’t run until the day of your arrival, you can certainly post, but I will return in kind that the rooms were commissioned, and significantly marked up to the clients, I don’t want to make a war out of this, and I fully understand your frustration but your issue is not with me, and I will defend my reputation at all costs." Clearly they simply don't care. For those of you who are familiar with Faulty Towers, it makes that institution look first class. Representative of my opinion and those of over forty more
