Detailed Reviews
I was looking to travel to the Berkshires for just one night with my dog (a 50 pound lab mix). This motel was dog friendly and wasn't charging a pet fee (like other hotels in the area were) so I thought I'd give it a try. I was very pleasantly surprised that it was perfect for our needs. Very clean, in a great location between two little towns, you could park right outside your door, and there was plenty of open, grassy space for me to walk my dog. Check in was contactless, but very easy. I do wish more information had been provided about check out. Check out was also contactless, but I wasn't sure of the procedure and I wasn't aware that the lobby didn't open until 7:30 AM (I am an early riser and was out the door before 7:00 AM). You also can get a breakfast voucher for the hotel (The Red Lion Inn) down the street. The voucher is provided at The Red Lion Inn so you don't actually have to get it at the Briarclff (which I didn't know). Just be aware that the breakfast is a sit down breakfast (not a typical hotel breakfast buffet). Because I had my dog with me, they were nice enough to package my breakfast to go. I would definitely stay at the Briarcliff again if I am ever back in that area!

Thank you for taking the time to leave us a thoughtful and informative review. Since we have had several information updates during the everchanging times of COVID we are in the process of updating our Breakfast/Room information once again. We do have a 24 hour number for questions posted in the rooms and on our lobby front door for additional information. We are grateful that you were able to travel and stay here with your pet. Because it is our experience that happy owners have happy pets.

Had an excellent stay. The innkeeper, Rhonda was awesome. Covid safe, clean rooms, great location—quiet but close drive to Butternut and into town. Rooms could use a little update and towels were not soft and fluffy but, cleanliness, friendliness and location far outweighed everything else.
Check in was a breeze with combo electric keypad. Lobby closed right now so we received meal vouchers for Red Lion Inn in Stockbridge. Lunch there was excellent, best New England clam chowder I have had in years!
I will be returning!

We stayed in February 2021 and booked a the King Bed Room. The bed was comfortable, very clean room and funky design. Nice small sitting area in the room which was great for hanging out. I LOVED the view out the front windows since its across from Monument mountain. The motel is right off the route 7 but set far back that you don't really hear the road noise.
I liked the Simple Human dispensers in the showers - such a great idea to reduce single use and travel size toiletries.
Rhonda is a superstar, she is the innkeeper and she was friendly and attentive to our requests. We stayed for 4 nights and requested fresh towels on our 3rd night and they were delivered promptly.
Having the Red Lion Inn as a sister property was a bonus, we did dine at the RLI and enjoyed the fire-pit outside too.
I returned again in April 2021 and had a fantastic visit. Would recommend as a great no-frills motel. Great value! We will return.

My husband and I booked the Briarcliff Motel for a weekend getaway to celebrate our anniversary. When we arrived to check in to the motel, at the check in time listed on our reservation, no one was there and the front desk area was closed. There was a sign on the door that said if you needed help to call the Red Lion Inn. I called the Red Lion Inn 3-4 times, no one answered.
We drove over to the Red Lion Inn (about 5 min drive) and then waited in a long line to talk to someone at the front desk. The person at the front desk gave me a code that would open the door to our room. I also asked for the manger's contact information at this point and was given her business card.
We drove back to the Briarcliff only to find out that this code did not open the door to our room. I called the Red Lion Inn again (no one answered). I also left a voicemail on the manager's direct line. After waiting for a while with no call back we returned to the Red Lion for the second time. At this point, I asked for a refund because after spending an hour just trying to get into our room I wanted nothing to do with this place. Thankfully the woman at the front desk cancelled my reservation and said I would not be charged.
I understand that COVID is making staffing both locations difficult, but the communication with guests could very easily be improved. For example, why not just tell guests they will want to check in at the Red Lion Inn rather than having them drive in circles? Also, if a problem like this happens, a simple acknowledgement that it shouldn't have happened would go a long way. We did not get any sort of apology from anyone... we also never got a call back from that manager.
I should also mention the website mentions DVDs and lawn games...I can't be sure since we never got in the room, but it seems unlikely we would have been able to access these things. We wanted to stay at the Braircliff partially because these things made us comfortable knowing we would have something to do on a rainy day. Again, this is understandable if these things are not available due to COVID, but this should be updated on the website to make this clear.

Thank you so much for your comments. We appreciate all feedback, both positive and constructive. We have been working hard to improve our hospitality during this pandemic. Despite the challenges, we have continued the effort. It is evident that in your case, we failed, and for that, we apologize. We understand the frustration that can come from arriving at a place where you are staying, and you end up having to do more work. Not having staff on-site at Briarcliff has been a learning experience during these difficult times. However, we now have a procedure where we call all arriving guests to provide them with their room code and answer any questions. We do apologize that your experience predated that procedure and resulted in you not staying with us. We hope you will return in the future, and we may show you just how much we have improved.

Hello!
I have to say that this little gem in GB is the best place to stay in the area. Not only is it dog friendly but the host is a straight up awesome hostetss with the mostess. The rooms are clean the property is well maintained and you can't beat a free breakfast treat (muffins) and a cup of joe in the mornings. I've been there a couple of times and both experiences have been well received. It's in the perfect location in the beautiful Berkshires. You have downtown Great Barrington down the road with little places to nosh along thee way and then you have Lenox, MA around the way as well. I highly recommend a stay here. Comfy clean rooms and a very cool staff that are more than happy to help with fresh clean towels and great recommendations to any hiking or fun eating spots. Have a great time! I'll definitely be back soon!!!! Thank you Rhonda!

Thank you for taking the time to leave us such a lovely review. We truly appreciate our guests and their feedback. We are proud to be the "pet friendliest" place to stay in the Berkshires. We are perfectly located across from Monument Mountain for a hike and just a short drive to Main Street in Great Barrington or Stockbridge. Lenox is only 15 minutes away and offers many places to shop and eat. We again thank you for your kind words.

This review is way overdue. The Briarcliff has been a true escape for me over the course of the last 18 months. A highly accessible and spectacular location, complemented by comfortable rooms and a phenomenal staff. The fact that you can drive up to your room, access via truly contactless means provides a sense of comfort in these crazy times. You control the level of interaction with others, which is great.
This place truly is dog friendly. Love that the rooms have a little corner mat for food and water bowls. The rooms are spacious, which is sideways good. The property is fantastic, lush green and borders the woods. For those with less than ideal tick protection, there is plenty of paved land to enjoy. This truly is a differentiator which in my opinion makes the Briatcliff motel one of the best doggo vacation hotels in the northeast. I'm really excited to see how Rhonda and rest of the Briarcliff team further evolve the offering. Plenty of cool things coming up!

The pleasure has been ours, thank you for writing such a wonderful review. We appreciate all our guest reviews and hearing that Briarcliff is such a special place to you brings a smile to our faces. It is extremely rewarding to know that we are able to provide a tranquil escape for you and your pet. Being a Pet Friendly Motel is a great source of pride for us. We understand that it is not easy to find pet friendly lodging and we truly love dogs. We are also looking toward the future and what amazing things it will bring to Briarcliff. We are grateful to have you and your doggo as our regular guests.

Our three nights at the Briarcliff Motel in June were wonderful. The rooms are super clean, charming (I love Marimekko), and cozy — in fact, we were happy to stay in reading one rainy afternoon — and Rhonda made us feel both welcome as if we were important guests and yet comfortable-casual as if we were at home. One evening as we sat at the fire pit she brought us all the fixings and perfect skewers for s'mores — such a treat for our little family! The morning coffee was delicious, we loved chatting with Rhonda and guests who stopped in, and breakfast at the Red Lion was another huge treat for us (though the prepandemic Briarcliff fare sounds good too)! When I was looking at accommodations in the Berkshires, I'd gone back and forth between B&Bs (which weren't really in our budget for this spontaneous mini-vacation) and an everyday chain motel (which I just couldn't get excited about), and I am so glad to have found this gem. I have already recommended the Briarcliff Motel to friends — which is not something I find myself doing very often! Five stars, no doubt about it!

Thank you for your wonderful review. We truly appreciate your kind words. Your explanation of your stay for other guests, was just lovely. The best time of day for us here at Briarcliff is chatting with our guests in the morning as the enjoy a cup of coffee. This gives us the opportunity to let them know about the area and all the things to do here in the Berkshires. We are grateful for you and for taking the time to share your experience with others.

Writing this review breaks my heart. I was a regular guest (4-5 times a year) for many years when Claire and Richard owned it. It was the perfect combination of comfy, a bit retro, homemade food, and great hospitality. It was purchased not long ago by the Red Lion Inn in Stockbridge, and while I tried to continue to stay here, the poor service turned me away. Essentially, the Briarcliff has gone from being its owners' labor of love to the neglected stepchild of a big conglomerate. Three out of four stays in the past year I was given the wrong room, or the wrong key code and stuck out in the parking lot waiting for someone to drive down from Stockbridge to try to let me in. When asking questions about room amenities, I was told by the Red Lion front desk "we don't know what's in those rooms. They are not on our property." Sad to say I'll enver stay there again and I strongly recommend others stay away.

Hello Travelprofessor_10, I would like to share some history with you about Briarcliff's journey from 2017 to COVID 2020-2021. Our small management company, Main Street Hospitality purchased Briarcliff in 2017. MSH also manages our Sister property the Iconic Red Lion Inn, 3.3 miles down the road in Stockbridge. Like so many others in hospitality we have had to reinvent ourselves to comply and stay current to the many COVID restrictions that we all were faced with during the last year. I do apologize that our customer service fell short and that there were issues with your contactless entry, room number and door code. Contactless entry has given our guests a great sense of comfort during COVID. I am sorry that you have had a poor experience with this system and with your feedback we continue to strive toward perfection. Please allow me to introduce myself, my name is Rhonda I am the new Innkeeper at Briarcliff. I moved to Briarcliff February 1, 2021 and I occupy the flat above the motel. My presence on property has enhanced our guests experience as there is very little to no wait time to resolve an issue or attend to a guest needs. As you stated that you are a regular and simply inquired about the amenities that were offered, not much has changed. However, there is an informational sheet posted in every room. This keeps our newer guests up to date with any changes during COVID and our regular guest expecting the same amenities. Which I can say, aside from the lobby being closed due to COVID not much has changed. Very recently, I have added additional amenities, such as Kuerig Coffee makers and Microwaves available upon request at this time. But soon all the rooms will have both a coffee maker and microwave. It is disappointing that you will never stay with us again and have recommended that guests stay away. Truly, I would have liked to speak with you, unfortunately this review is the first I am hearing of your discontent. Our Rooms are clean, we offer a great value and will continue to improve on our customer service in times that our guests need us more than ever. We will continue to be comfy, retro and flexible to our ever changing world.

We stayed one night in August and had a fine stay. The room was a motel room, but a rather *nice* motel room and a comfy bed. They offered a meager breakfast on-site, but they also offered a $12 voucher for breakfast at the Red Lion a few miles up the road. I'd stay there again.

Now part of the Red Lion Inn, this updated, but still primitive motel is a perfect place to stay in this time of COVID. It is great to be able to walk directly from the car to the room, and the refrigerator makes it easy to carry our own breakfast and lunch. The RedLion Inn helps ensure high quality, and was a great backup when a storm caused a power outage.

Thank you so much! We appreciate your comments! We have been working hard to make Briarcliff a safe, off the grid experience for all our guests looking to get away and relax. We are so sorry that you lost power during your stay. During some of our seasonal storms, we ended up losing power in most of Berkshire County. We are happy to see that this did not impact your stay too much. We hope you will come to stay with us again soon!

Sorry, I only just saw this: there are a lot of great lake-swimming spots nearly. We like Benedict Pond, which is open to all and has a small sandy beach and picnic facilities (you can even buy a small bundle of firewood and make a little campfire) - about ten minutes from the motel. Lake Mansfield, which is in Great Barrington itself, is where the local kids learn to swim, and is a great family destination.
