We have passed this motel and restaurant 100 times and finally decided to give it a try. Contacted Frank the owner, got a quick response about a reservation. Showed up and he meet me there with key in hand. The room was what you would expect from a road side motel. It was clean, quiet and comfortable. We went to the restaurant later that evening and it was like seeing old friends. The waitstaff and bartender was very friendly. Had lasagna that was actually made by one of the waitresses we were told. Delicious! Seemed like a very family, friendly environment. Dont pass up the night time walk across the French King Bridge, it was beautiful with the moonlight. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Dont expect a hotel feel, but for what it is, it really works. Thanks for having us.

We spent 4 nights at the motel and never had housekeeping services. We made the beds, but fresh linens were not to be provided. There were no phones, coffeemaker,or other amenities. While there was a continental breakfast, there was no mention of it. (We found out about it in conversation with another guest.) The outdoor pool was a beautiful shade of emerald green. We did not dine in the restaurant, due to the hours of operation not coinciding with our 4 day visit.

We’ve been to the French King Restaurant many times over the years and just recently returned again with an out of town guest. The staff is always friendly, the food is always delicious and the restaurant has a great homey New England atmosphere that is hard to find. We love this place and always look forward to returning. Our guest had a wonderful time too. We can’t wait to come back again next time we are passing through the area!

In comparison to places I've stayed recently, French King is below average but, then, it is a MOTEL and not a hotel. Were we able to book into the hotel for the same price, we would have, but everything was booked in the area. Previous reviewers complained about the lack of amenities in the room but we found all the standard amenities like refrigerator, flat screen TV and, even, internet access (although the signal is weak and drops in and out). There is air conditioning but when it's cooler you can get a nice cross breeze from the back to the front. Since this motel is set back from the road (which isn't all that busy anyway), there's no issue with noise if you have the windows open. There is an outdoor pool and there are chairs just outside the room for lounging in the afternoon sun. Unlike most hotels that I've stayed in, there is no free breakfast. You can, however, get breakfast at 7 AM (8 AM on Sundays) in the French King restaurant which is, essentially, on the same property. For a reasonable price, you can get a substantial breakfast (we did not have lunch or dinner there). The only thing you can't get is bagels, even though they are on the menu.

The motel rooms have been updated and are tucked into the woods so they are in shade a good part of the day. Why is this important? We are in the midst of a super heat wave and anything that helps is welcome. Beds are comfortable and the rooms are reasonably spacious. On the downside, there is no coffee pot, no iron, no ironing board, no room phone and no workable wi-fi. But if you can forgo these items there is no reason not to stay.
