We stayed three nights in mid-week and were given Room 9 on the third floor, up a narrow carpeted stairway that provided good exercise! Afternoon sunshine filled our room with light. This was a king room, essentially a suite, as it included a separate sitting room with desk, comfortable reading chairs, a drop-leaf table, a small refrigerator, and abundant natural light. There was also a fire exit right outside our room. Downstairs, a large parlor held books, wonderfully comfortable seating, and soft music that played continuously. We are gluten-free and these are Covid times, so for breakfast we had granola and yogurt, with fresh apples and oranges and bananas available nearby. We chose to take the food to our room. Breakfast did not begin until 8:30, and we are early risers who provide our own mugs, coffee, and tea and who like to enjoy them around six. For those like us, my suggestion would be to ask about how to get boiling water early. It would be wonderful to have an electric kettle available, if only on loan as needed. This was done for us at another old New England inn, and it solved our problem. A second suggestion would be to provide an additional wooden desk chair (there’s room for it), which would enable both persons to sit at the dropleaf table, whether to enjoy snacks, to play cards, or to allow both guests to have flat surfaces on which to work. The baseboard heat in our room was more than adequate, as was the hot tap water in the modern bathroom. The Inn is located within easy walking distance of the waterfront and several restaurants, shops, and quaint residential lanes. Stop & Shop is a very short drive away. Parking for the inn is just behind the back yard but is accessed via car by turning down Green Ave., left at the end, and left again. The front desk is not always manned, and at any given hour the innkeeper could be busy doing maintenance or painting, so do contact him in advance to let him know your arrival time! Otherwise you might have trouble finding him. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We were treated with warmth and kindness, and we hope to visit again.

Due to some issues at another place, we had previously booked, we were able to find this Inn online during the 1st week of June and booked it. The Ashley Inn is centrally located; ½ mile from the Stop and Shop and close to town. Upon arrival, we were given a choice between two rooms and selected the one on the 2nd floor near the fire exit which included a fireplace, sofa, and mini fridge. Fred was an excellent host. List was provided with many excellent restaurants. Room was spacious, comfortable, and clean. Breakfast of fruit, coffee/tea, and muffins was available. Free parking is available behind the Inn. There is also a parlor with nice library and calm music that plays. Would definitely recommend this B&B.

I agree with the other comments that The inn is extremely worn with soiled furnishings and poor decor. Cold coffee was on offer at the non existent breakfast and an overall lack lustre feel. The lounge which could have been made very welcoming was uninviting with shabby couches and pillows that hadn’t been plumped up in a decade. The whole place needed renovation with moth eaten stair carpets and shabby pictures. The couch in the bedroom looked filthy and the furniture throughout mismatched and old. The bed was ok as was Fred on check in. The inn is a shadow of its former self and needs a serious injection of cash to compete with modern day equivalents.

Ginger Pros and Cons.

Good: Getting off the ferry; Ginger Hotel is only a short walk. The Ginger is accessible to everything. You will not need a car. Lots of walkable areas with great restaurants, historic cottages and laid back people. The town green and the beach is only steps away. You can also easily grab the bus to many other towns and beaches or you can rent a scooter, moped or jeep. The hotel staff were awesome, the rooms where clean, great shower, well cared for and loved having an outside space/balcony with lots of plants. The bed was super comfortable, the loved the architecture of the older built and enjoyed the age of The Ginger; it had a nice warm feeling.

The Bad: Being down in the middle of things means you hear EVERYTHING. They provide a sound machine which is nice but our room faced the street and even with a sound machine I still woke up. The room was small without appropriate clothing storage areas. There was a closet but not enough hangers and just an open space for non hangable cloths. Easily fixed but they need to focus on those minor details. Lastly, there is no staff on during the evening, so if you need attending to; this is probably not your place.

All in all; I really enjoyed the old weird little place. I will definitely recommend it to others and will come here again.

I don't typically write a bad review or any reviews for that matter, but feel compelled to write this one. We stayed for 1 night. I love old buildings, but I don't love old buildings that wreak of mold. They were either burning candles or had plug in air fresheners to cover up the smell. The 2 scents were not working together as a team! Our room had the filthiest white chair in it and a hole in the wall! The carpet was filthy leading up to our room, the downstairs living room had dust completely covering the console table (maybe dust from the road since the door was open?). Not worth the price and definitely don't stay if you have a sensitivity for mold. We slept with the window open and the bathroom fan on.
The man who checked us in was very nice. Not the owner, but said he lived on the property.

Pretty much exactly what you’d expect from a New England bed and breakfast, a cozy, quaint, and delightful stay. The bed was very comfortable, got great sleep here.
The highlight is definitely spending time with Fred and Stella (resident dog). Even if the rooms were icky (which they’re not at all, the exact opposite in fact) I’d still probably stay here to hangout with those two.
Stella is just the cutest sweetest dog to be greeted by every time you enter. Location is prime. Walkable to everything in Edgartown while avoiding a lot of the nighttime noise. And the price is more than reasonable. Don’t miss out!

I have stayed here many times. It is always a treat. The owners, Fred and Janet, are lovely people. Always a pleasure to chat with. They have a new addition to the team, Pete. He is so friendly and a new Potter to the Island. The rooms are clean, some are newly wall papered and painted. Great winter project. They offer a box breakfast instead of the hot due to Covid. The location is great, right downtown. Always my choice when visiting the Island.

We stay at inns whenever we can, and the Ashley Inn just didn't measure up. The innkeepers were neither friendly nor helpful. When we asked for directions for a main road nearby, they said they were out of maps and proceeded to give us wrong directions. We stayed in room #1 on the first floor which was extremely noisy. The room faced Main St., and the creaky stairs and constantly slamming-front door were just outside our door. Our room was very small with little storage space. The bathroom was very small and did not seem to have any flat surfaces whatsoever--everything we placed on the shelves or near the sink was soon ejected into the sink or toilet. Big inconvenience. The food was good but the portions were small. Some of the diners asked for extra portions and the breakfast servers always acted appauled. The positive things about the inn include cookies & lemonade in the afternoon (which they don't tell you about), some nice hammocks in the yard (which the don't tell you if they belong to the inn or the neighbors) and the central location--but there are tons of inns in the same area. Go elsewhere.

Great stay 7/9-11. The Ashley Inn is warm, gracious and inviting. It fits right in with Edgartown, the old town of whaling captains' homes near the harbor. It is an easy walk to Edgartown shops and restaurants. The Vineyard is a magical place, and the Ashley Inn only enhances that magic.
The Hurleys, who won and run the inn; Fred and wife, sister Barbara, and kids (who help with serving and other chores), extended family, Buddy the dog, and hired help, Sarah and Abigail, all were friendly and helpful. The room was nice, not fancy, but certainly created a good inn ambiance. AC worked well, the room was very clean and had all comforts. Excellent breakfasts outside in the garden, and nice grounds. I have visited Martha's Vineyard many times, and definitely recommend the Ashley Inn. It is also more reasonable than most other inns and B&Bs in Edgartown. I also recommend the Jonathan Munroe House.

We've stayed at many inns - and we enjoyed staying here. We particularly like the innkeepers. They were very friendly, totally helpful and had the whole family pitching in and working together, even the kids! I don't know what the other reviewer was talking about - the owners here are lovely. Great location. Recommended.
