We stayed again in the Nantucket Cottage. We enjoyed the privacy of the Cottage combined with ready access to the very knowledgeable innkeepers. We chose the B&B option, planning to eat breakfast out a couple mornings during our week-long stay. In the event we found the Cottage so well stocked that we ate in every morning.

After spending a week at the Nantucket Cottage at Fort Hill B&B in July 2021, my husband and I returned this July, but for twice as long! While that alone says plenty, I’ll add a few more points. As before, Jean and Gordon, our innkeepers, were friendly, helpful and readily available; their reasonable COVID-19 protocol helped us feel safe and relaxed. A 5-6 day heat wave really put the ductless air conditioning to a test, and it passed with flying colors–we slept well and were cool and comfortable in the daytime. The wonderful shower got extra use during that week, too. When some unanticipated work issues arose, the fast and consistent wifi came in handy. And, the rocking chair remained in its appointed spot, perfect for gazing at the lovely ocean view! We’re already looking forward to enjoying that view–and everything else at Fort Hill–next year!

This is about our 7th year staying in the Nantucket Cottage. Does that tell you anything? The cottage has everything you could need, it's very comfortable, quiet and serene, and it is in a perfect location to access any location on the Cape. And the hosts Jean and Gordon are just superb. We will return again next year!

This was our second visit to Jean and Gordon’s Ft. Hill B&B and it once again exceeded our expectations. This time due to COVID-19 we stayed in the Cottage so we collide all isolate. Jean and Gordon laid in a real variety of breakfast goodies for us after asking what our preferences were - and they were spot on! The cottage itself is just delightful and my wife and I really relaxed when we weren’t out and to a limited degree about. It’s a great cottage for an extended stay with great room and bedroom amenities including a kitchen that allowed us to eat in when desired ( when we stayed the first time we were in the main hose and those breakfasts still remain among our favorites). We recommend Ft. Hill very very highly and thank Jean and Gordon once more for providing us such a wonderful place to live for 5 days.

We were so pleased to be able to return to the fort Hill B&B again this Fall. The Nantucket Cottage was as comfortable and as secluded as we remembered it, and the views out the windows and from the yard were spectacular! Gordon and Jean are thoughtful hosts and made us extremely comfortable. We'll be back next year!

Response from Jean Avery, Owner at Fort Hill Bed and Breakfast
Responded Nov 28, 2021
Thanks for your kind words, Dan. It is always our pleasure to host you! If all goes as planned, in the fall of 2022 the Cape Cod National Seashore is scheduled to mow the Fort Hill field. I think you will be amazed at the even more spectacular view from the cottage out to the Atlantic Ocean once the tall grass is cut! We also have a few improvements scheduled for the Nantucket Cottage patio so stay tuned. See you in 2022!

We stayed at Fort Hill B&B in August 2004. The place is very charming and the hosts are gracious and welcoming. We stayed in the Emma suite and found it generously spacious and well appointed. However, the place has both small peculiarities and bigger demerits.
Small peculiarities first. A guest paying about $200 for a room may be surprised to find supermarket bags lining trash cans (are they saving money?) and no towel rack (it is the Cape, after all).
Now to more serious issues. The National Seashore views feature prominently on their advertisement materials (“The Fort Hill Bed and Breakfast provides guests with magnificent views” says their website). However, there are no views from either of the two rooms in the main cottage.
The smaller of the two room, Lucille, is reached by a steep and narrow staircase, that may be difficult to negotiate for some and further has a bathroom that is separate from the bedroom requiring a guest to walk, albeit briefly, through an area that is visible from the common area.
Finally, the biggest demerit of them all. The place lacks a covered porch. At least in August, the marshes are infested with mosquitoes that make sitting outside after sunset next to impossible. A covered porch would seriously add to comfort of the guests and ambience of the inn. What is more surprising is that the hosts actually do have a covered porch, which also boasts the “magnificent views” of the marshes. However, guests have no access to it.

We all have certain expectations when we book a B&B. Sometimes its a romantic getaway, sometimes an adventure, and for many its just a quiet weekend away. Well we found all this and the best breakfast on the Cape at the Avery's Fort Hill retreat in Eastham. We wanted to be in the main house (they have a separate cottage too) and the Emma Suite was roomy and cozy all at the same time, with a large, well appointed bath off the bedroom. The bedroom has a beautiful canopy bed. They have romantic well covered.

The house and grounds are perched on a hill just a stone's throw from a magnificent salt marsh and preserve. Binoculars and a camera are necessities. You can walk from the house to beach trails, woods trails, and experience visual panoramas second to none anywhere on the Cape. It didn't hurt to have perfect weather either.

Gordon and Jean Avery, our hosts, treated us with a friendly welcome and several great leads for dinner. Coffee was promised and delivered at 7:30AM in the main common room just outside our door. Then came the breakfast. Sunday morning we had fresh fruit with yogurt, a zucchini quiche and a baked stuffed tomato with pesto (all fresh from their garden) and these jelly stuffed muffins for sweets. Monday morning, after meeting the two new guests who had arrived Sunday evening from LA, we were served a hot poached pear with a creamy sauce obviously concocted with wisdom from above, and then cinnamon French toast with sausages. It was the perfect way to start the day.

Awesome spot, great hosts, superb food. What else could you ask for? All I can think of is a longer visit next time we go.

My wife and I had the (extreme) pleasure of staying at the Fort Hill Bed and Breakfast for a week this past August. Gordon and Jean Avery, host and hostess, were most attentive, knowledgeable, and helpful; they made our stay with them most memorable.
Jean happens to be a superb cook, and Gordon gave us advice about interesting places we might want to explore (we have been visiting the Cape regularly for over 12 years).
We stayed in the "honeymoon cottage" in honor of our 24th anniversary, and better or more comfortable accomodations would be hard to find !!!
All in all, a thoroughly wonderful experience which will remain in our memories for a long time !!! Accolades and kudos to the Averys, and many thanks for your hospitality !!!

In September, we spent a week at this exceptional B & B, and we will return again and again. The location was unparalleled - in a historic district, across from a magnificently-preserved sea captain's home, a stroll from spectacular views of Nauset Marsh and Cape Cod Bay. The entire area is closed to traffic after midnight. We stayed in the spacious yet cozy cottage - the ideal, romantic getaway for a couple. The cathedral-ceilinged living room had a big comfortable sofa that faced a gas-burning stove(great for cool nights in the fall), a small kitchen with sink, refrigerator, toaster, and microwave, and one charming bedroom upstairs with a very comfortable bed. The cottage was beautifully designed and furnished, and included an excellent collection of books (not the usual yard-sale types you normally find). The hosts were genuine, welcoming, and warm. And, those gourmet breakfasts - simply fabulous!

We have been going to the Cape for a number of years normally renting a cottage. My husband and I decided to stay at a Bed and Breakfast this year. After staying at Fort Hill, we will never rent a house again. The hosts were absouletly wonderful and the Nantucket suite is what a vacation is all about. It was impeccable, quiet and comfortable. Need I say more. . . .

Hi Maggie, we have availability for Oysterfest weekend in Wellfleet, Oct. 16,17,18 with a 2-night min in the ocean view Nantucket cottage as a Guest House accommodation ( breakfast is not offered). We are full up to that weekend and will be closing the cottage after that weekend this year. You can find our rates and availability on our web site by googling Fort Hill Bed and Breakfast.
