My husband and I recently spent a lovely week in Eastham at Fort Hill Bed and Breakfast’s Nantucket Cottage. This was our first overnight trip since the COVID-19 pandemic began. We chose Fort Hill, in part, because we had learned that the owners, Jean and Gordon, were taking a responsible, science-based approach to the pandemic, and upon arrival, we quickly felt both safe and comfortable. The two-story cottage was spacious with a living room, kitchen, and bathroom on the first floor and a bedroom upstairs. Pegs at the entrance and hooks in the bathroom and bedroom were useful for hanging jackets and other belongings (everyday I seemed to find another hook hidden in the bedroom and always put it to good use!). The kitchen offered an under-counter refrigerator, large sink, microwave, toaster oven, induction burner, Keurig coffee-maker, and many other electric appliances. It was well-stocked with dishes, pots, pans, and utensils. We enjoyed breakfast and bird-watching from stools at the counter in front of a bank of windows. The bathroom had plenty of towels and ample counter space for our toiletries. The tiled shower, which had a handheld shower on an adjustable mount, was fantastic. Water pressure was excellent and hot water was in good supply. The living room had comfortable furniture, including a rocking chair perfectly placed for the distant ocean view. With two sliders, the room had an almost seamless connection to the outdoors. The bedroom was also a pleasant room, and we slept well on the firm mattress. Lighting was excellent in every room, and electrical outlets were plentiful, especially in the bedroom where they made overnight charging of devices simple. We were pleased with how effectively the mini-split air conditioning cooled the cottage on our lone hot, muggy day/night. The location of the B&B just off Route 6 was very convenient to everything on the outer and lower Cape. Despite its proximity to the busy roadway, the setting was quiet and tranquil. We liked lounging in the several seating areas just outside the cottage as well as taking a peek at Jean’s large vegetable garden across the lawn--she kindly treated us to a basket of salad fixings! The Fort Hill section of the National Seashore abuts the property, and scenic trails begin just a short walk away. Without a doubt, Jean and Gordon were key to our wonderful week. Because of the pandemic, we probably interacted with them less often than is typical. Nonetheless, they offered unsolicited, helpful advice and answered any questions we had, both in the months prior to our arrival and during our stay. They clearly have deep knowledge and tremendous enthusiasm for the area they call home! Our week at Fort Hill gave us a perfect launching point from which to explore the Cape and a much appreciated chance to relax in peaceful surroundings. We are eager to return!…
