I just returned after a few days at the George Brooks House in lovely St. Michaels, MD. The owner/innkeeper Will and his charming wife Julia are gracious and fun hosts. I had the house to myself and enjoyed morning coffee with the paper looking at their backyard pool area as the sun came up. Will was very knowledgeable about the history of Talbot County and recommended some fantastic places to eat including Bistro St. Michael, Ava's, and Chesapeake Landing. I also had coffee at Blue Heron and bought to go salad and treats from Sprouts. All were fantastic! I ate my way through the weekend. I do recommend going outside of busy season. It seems like everything is open and you get to enjoy sunny days without all the crowds. I'm looking forward to a return visit.
George Brooks house was 5* from the first phone call! This was our first visit to St. Michael. What wonderful, friendly and warm accommodations we found at George Brooks. Their great price point and incredibly helpful over-the-phone communication led me to make the booking. Boy, are we glad I did! The house did not disappoint! Neither did the service! We traveled as a family of 4, with children ages 5 and 7. Our late night arrival was accommodated for and Will (the inkeeper) called us before our arrival to ensure a smooth transition would take place. The house was clean, quiet, warm and enchanting! The kids thought they were in a castle and loved getting to watch a late night movie on Disney (a large library of DVDs was alask available downstairs). The furniture was gorgeous and the decor was classic and timeless. I didn’t see anything “run-down” or in disarray. It’s an old home with history and incredible character- the owners did a great job making it shine while keeping the integrity of the St. Michael charm- well done! We slept great and our showers were hot! The bed was very comfortable and the pillow options were perfect. We all loved our room. The kids respectfully explored the garden area by the pool in the mornings and liked sitting out on the deck outside our room door- the view was lovely. Breakfast was delicious!! Served fresh, hot and homemade. We also enjoyed the muffins and coffee beforehand-yum. The kids were treated with kindness and generosity- they felt very special! We loved our stay at George Brooks and had a magical time in St. Michael! I only wish we stayed longer and can’t wait to come back- we WILL be back. Next time we will stay long enough to utilize the bikes, jacuzzi and pool available for guests! …
Always a gem to stay there! 5* for sure! D&C Jeff. Enjoyed the hot tub, Will’s fabulous breakfasts, the in room jacuzzi tub, very ample parking, close proximity to town and beautiful gardens! Rates are reasonable too! Highly recommend you give this inn a try.
1) Advertises 3-course breakfast - a frozen hash brown pattie was one of them. Other B&B's we stayed at serve delicious, from scratch food. Not them. Worst breakfast we had at a B&B. Breakfast was cold and not much about it was homemade. Breakfast was advertised for 9:00 am (very late if you want to do anything in the morning). We got our breakfast at 9:25 am. Muffins were advertised as available at 8:00 am. with coffee. That was not the case. 2) Advertises hot tub - was not in service. 3) Property was run down and in disrepair. Extremely unkempt both inside and outside. 4) There was a large hole in the ceiling in our room, and when the people upstairs took a shower, we got a shower in our room too! 5) Owner was not around much and indifferent to our concerns. I recommend staying in Easton. It is only a 15 minute drive to St. Michaels.…
Our stay at the GBHouse was great. Nice porch to sit out on and read if it's raining. Easy parking. Will and the ladies were gracious hosts. One reviewer commented on Will's gruffness. I would be out of sorts a little if people request accomodations for 2 pit bull dogs in cages. Who on earth travels with 2 pit bulls? What do you do with them when going out to eat? What about the other guests? Leave your mutts at home. Geesh!
We decided to take a last minute trip to St Michael’s . This Inn was the only room available. It was a bit more than we expected to pay but thought it would be nice to stay in a BandB. It was tired , dirty , broken furniture in the room , etc etc , too much to write . The breakfast was nice and in a good location . Bikes were a nice amenity . Overall , I’d skip staying here ever again, for the money , I’m sure there are much better kept places in the area .
Just a few minutes outside of St. Michaels, the George Brooks House B&B is a welcome getaway from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. I booked this room for the outside access directly to the pool area and gardens and was not disappointed! The room and entire house had beautiful furnishings and was clean and welcoming. I read the other reviews -- we never saw any bugs, ants, or crickets in our room or anywhere in the home. The pool had a solar cover to keep it warm (we visited in late September) which was removed at our request when we wanted to swim. The hot tub was roomy and a perfect temperature for me. Sitting in the hot tub I was surprised that I couldn't hear anything but the birds and the wind in the trees. Apparently the pool equipment was installed inside the garage to keep the area extra quiet and peaceful. My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed the breakfasts and I was glad that my dietary restrictions were noted and respected in the ingredients that were chosen and served to me. There was an outdoor wet bar with a fridge stocked with soft drinks, water and iced tea for us, as well as an indoor fridge in the coffee station that we could use to chill our wine and beer that we had brought with us. We were so happy with our stay that we booked the same weekend next year before we even left! …
This is an old home that requires some TLC. Some of the issues mentioned in the negative reviews were noticed by us, and we hope some work and cleanup can be performed on the home. I travel frequently and in many places things are not completely up to par. The difficulty of finding staff etc. is a real issue, maybe more so in places away from the city such as St. Michael's. We enjoyed the pool - this was one of the main reasons we booked here, as we were visiting our elderly uncle and knew it would be really hot at this time of year. The gardens were beautiful. The setting was quiet and relaxing. Other places in the area that had pools were either more expensive, or seemed not as nice. We like a homey inn where we can relax, and the George Brooks House was our best bet. The innkeeper communicated well with us before and during the stay as needed. We could not start the hot tub jets, and found out the next day that the switch was broken so it needed to be started in a different location. This information should be communicated to guests ahead of time. The coffee choices were good, the muffins that were always available were delicious. There was a fridge in the inn for us to store items we purchased. There was a fridge and ice available on the outside deck with a variety of drinks on hand for guests. As far as our guest room goes...it was roomy with nice furniture - better than many places Ive stayed recently. It could use better lighting, and better/more storage in the bathroom. Luckily, we did not have any issue with ants. We did have a cricket hanging out in our bathroom, but it did not make any noise so we kind of adopted him. On the last day we captured it and took it outside. There was clutter in parts of the home and around the pool. Things could be maintained better. A large inn and grounds such as this one must be a lot of work to maintain, and again I suspect this is largely a staffing issue. One thing I'd like to mention, evidently there is a large pothole somewhere in the drive in front of the house. We never hit it with our rental car, but my cousin who drives a large truck visited us there and hit it - he said it was a really bad hole, and it should be looked at and fixed right away before a car is damaged, causing a headache for everyone. Overall, we were very happy with our stay.…
This was a below average experience for a fairly expensive rate. Here is why: - the inn keeper, Will, was not exactly a friendly person. He came across like he was doing you a favor by selling you a room. - the food was average at best. When we asked to be served breakfast at the pool, Will acted like we were making a large request. -LOTS of wasps and hornets at this B & B. when I notified Will about the issue he responded by stating. "what do you expect from an old house that has been rehabilitate. the nests have been here a long time". guess he does not care if people might be allergic to a wasp sting !! -I attempted to turn on the hot tub with no luck one evening. the next day Will stated I used the incorrect switch. That switch, he subsequently showed me, was in the LAUNDRY ROOM !!!. and I should have known this how ???? the Laundry room, by the way was not open for guests, only staff. -Poor lighting at the pool area and in our room. - the conditions around the grounds were disheveled and cluttered. It was the equivalent of a dirty college student's room. The GB House had the advantage of being near the heart of St. Michaels but that is about it. My wife, who prides herself at picking great stay locations for us, was upset for a week. she felt like she failed miserably with this choice. i have to agree. Will really needs to do some work on this facility and polish up on his hospitality skills. DAL…
When we pulled up to spend the night we were immediately met with a run down old house with peeling paint and un mowed grass. We were assigned an upstairs room from the innkeeper who was sitting in the breakfast room paying his bills in scattered piles of paper. When we finally made it up the rickety stair case, almost too small to carry a suit case, we got to our room. The room was really in need of a fixup. When I turned the water on in the bathroom, ants appeared from the back of the fixture. We thought maybe they were coming from the hole in the bathroom wall! The shampoo and soap was a shared pump spray that looked like it had been around for awhile. We went downstairs where there was the entrance to a rather nice pool but we observed a plastic trash basket filled with weeds that had never been emptied and garden tools that had never been put away, We heard someone outside mowing the grass and when we left for dinner, there were grass clippings all over our car! The bed was fine but when we tried to close the blinds, they quickly fell on the floor, with evidence that someone had tried to fix them before our arrival. In the morning, we were met by the innkeeper's enthusiastic wife who made a very good breakfast only to be interrupted by flies and more ants crawling under my plate. The Innkeeper told us that they had owned the B&B for 21 years and had made many repairs. We certainly hope they live long enough to finish the job. This place was not inexpensive. We will never return.…
