The room was nice and bright, bedding was comfortable. Ocean view was beautiful. Staff was attentive to needs when you called. Room was not as clean as I would have liked. They tell you free parking, that is if you can find a spot in their tight garage/parking area, if not the other lot is 2 blocks away across a 4 lane street. They also have a few spots they call VIP parking for $20 a day, they were all taken. We paid $100 for 4 nights at the parking lot next door. They did not clean the room or make the bed everyday unless you asked because of COVID, which was given to you to read on a paper when you checked in.

Our family of five just returned from our OCMD vacation, and we had a wonderful stay at the Commander. This was not our first time there, but I will admit some recent reviews had me concerned. All that worry was for nothing.
We arrived around 6 pm knowing the hotel is understaffed and there could be a line for check in. Upon our arrival we were checked in immediately, and were lucky to find a parking spot under our building. We were on the 4th floor of the cabana building and our room was perfect. Everything was clean, towels/sheets stocked and fridge cold.
It is known going into your stay that there is no daily housekeeping. Unless you're incredibly messy, I can't see this as an issue. We didn't have any problem obtaining towels/TP/trash bags quickly when we asked.
During our week long stay we noticed daily the maintenance men going through the building to pick up trash, touch up paint, walk the grounds, etc. At no time did our family have an issue of smelling marijuana or hearing anyone party.
It is obvious that some of the staff is overwhelmed. In my opinion, much has to do with them being understaffed, but a lot also is from them dealing with pettiness.
I'm not saying to lower your standards, but set expectations realistically. And be courteous to the staff that is working.
Also, have to point out these pros:
LOCATION
Grotto's
Free Beach Chairs
Pool Bar (which is over priced)
Rocking Chairs
Ice Cream Spot

we stayed here last weekend, the first thing we get there for check in at 4 was told housekeeping was running late because they were taking extra time to clean and sanitize our room because of COVID-19, what a joke, we waited until almost 530 to get in our room, I always inspect things when I go to a hotel, the first bed I pulled back the covers and there was a blood stain on the sheets, the pull out cough had dirt on it and springs that were showing from the mattress, I showed the front desk and they had the sheets changed and I was given a food certificate for 60.00.
The next day one of the people in the room ask Debbie at the front desk for more towels, she was very rude to her and ask why we needed more towels already ( like seriously) she accused us of having to many people in our room??? we paid for 6 we had six people, yes I think we may need extra towels, after 2 hours of not receiving any towels, I went back down to the lobby and was told that housekeeping was not answering and that they were short staffed. I walked around until I found someone in housekeeping and ask them for more and she gave them to me right away.
When we checked out on Sunday I was returning the key cards, and was told I still owe 400 on my bill. I pulled up the receipts on my phone showing that the full amount had been charged to my card and was already received, After going back and forth with Debbie it was realized that I was in fact already paid up and I was already good to check out.
Hotel was not clean at all!! the telephone in our room didn't work, had a different room number assigned to it. Wifi was not good
Plus side to everything was we had a good view from out balcony
the pool lady I think her name was Donna was amazing very friendly and
accomadtingnever stay here again!!!!

+1
Stayed here with a total of 6 family members after a last minute vacation plan change due to COVID 19 concerns. We stayed in 2 cabana suites, overlooking the outdoor pool but with a ocean view.
Check in for the first room was no problem. We didn’t get the call second room was ready until 7:30pm, even though we already had the keys.
Due to COVID 19 concerns, there is currently no shuttle & no housekeeping services, except at checkout. We had to call the front desk for anything we needed like fresh towels, toilet paper & trash removal.
However, neither of our rooms could be considered “clean”. Built up dust on vents & ceiling fans. Carpet needs to be shampooed. Sheets on pull out couch had crusty stains, kinda looked like old pizza.
It was also one of the noisiest hotels ever; people partying till all hours of the night. The smell of Marijuana permeates the air. Don’t move your car or you’ll have to park in the overflow parking area about 2 scary blocks away. The night security guard offered to walk me back to hotel. Here’s a tip- there is free parking right across from the hotel, just display your parking pass.
The location is very good. Short walk to beach, boardwalk, pizza & ice cream. They do have fully equipped kitchen areas. Ice machine, laundry machines & vending. You can walk to CVS & Victoria’s for seafood dinners.
Just make sure you bring some cleaning supplies & take care of the majority of the cleaning yourself

Let me start by saying that last year my family and I were super impressed with this hotel and couldn’t wait to return this summer. This summer,” impressed” would not be the word, however, I am not going to review certain negative aspects of our stay because I do believe it was Covid related. In retrospect it probably wasn’t the best time to visit OCMD due to lack of employees everywhere. The staff was clearly overwhelmed due to understaffing and extra sanitation. In addition, things were breaking right and left...the a/c unit, the toilets, and even a pipe broke next door sending water into our unit. There needS to be definite upgrades to this hotel specifically new sofa beds which were awful to sleep on. Also, the showers need longer shower curtains so water doesn’t spill onto the floor. I think we will take a bit of a break next summer so the Commander can tweak a few things because we do enjoy this hotel. The location is great, and the pool is wonderful. A big shout out to Donna the pool assistant who is absolutely amazing!

I would like to say I have stayed here a couple years ago and LOVED it. This visit was not as pleasant. We booked last September, a specific room (Navigator) & after a 3 hour wait for check in( and hour looking for parking) we were given the wrong room. When I asked about it, the evening manger snapped at me "Its not my fault!" We did not get into the proper room for 2 nights and was offered a slight refund which can not be proven or dis-proven as they were not wanting to give a copy of the bill... even then the rates were confusing and I am sure there was no deal. Another issue was towels and toilet paper... mixed messages about how to get such items. Parking was a major issue as they have bought another property and allow others to park in the lot. They really need to put and end to that if you are at the other property then that is where you should be parking! It really sucked waiting hours late for a check in & having no parking spots... We hope to visit some other OC spots but were concerned about whether or not we'd get parking! Also the whole place smelled like pot.. Bad.
So some positives it was clean, Donna the pool lady was fun & the shaved ice place.

We decided to splurge and get a nice ocean front room on the boardwalk. Our first impression was not great. Staff was not wearing masks, and the lobby was full of people waiting to check in AFTER the 4 PM check-in time. Our room was one of many not ready. We were told we would be compensated, but we were not. The pull-out sofa was broken, with springs that creaked every time my son moved, and he was in pain from the springs. We asked for a pad for the sofa bed and were told we would get it. 11 hours later, we still didn't have it and were told there were none available when we asked again. My son had to sleep on the floor. I paid $380/night for my son to sleep on the floor. When we checked in, we got a text welcoming us and saying to text them when we needed something. No one responds to the texts you send until 12+ hours later, if at all. So don't bother. We discovered upon entering our room that there is no maid service unless you stay for a week. They said they provided bags to bag up your towels and trash, but no such bags were provided. We constantly were responsible for emptying the dehumidifier, otherwise it beeped at us. There was no wifi the entire stay. And I didn't get to enjoy the ocean front view I splurged for without breathing in Marijuana smoke. It became clear on day 2 that it likely came from the young boys they have "cleaning" when we were stuck in an elevator with him. The shower curtain also was not long enough to keep the water in the shower, and our bathroom flooded each time we took showers. We did not see any staff members cleaning anything the entire 5 days, so there is no way this place is keeping up with COVID-19 requirements. I will NEVER stay here again. Our stay here ruined my family's entire vacation.

We did not even get here yet and I am having problems with this hotel! We cancelled this room booked for this week, Wed to Friday for a better hotel and better rate back on 7/2. Received 2 email confirmations that the room was cancelled, checked my credit card and still was not credited. I called them yestereday, the lady Debbie asks me did you book on Booking.com, I told her I booked directly on their website and then called and should have received a credit from a cancellation on 7/2 for this coming week. She says it will be done by Monday, it needs to be audited. I have cancelled multiple times on hotel websites and travel sites and never had this problem! I am so happy we are not staying here and looking at the last 3-5 reviews, its apparent not many people are happy staying here. Charging $300-400/night during the week with this kind of service and current COVID situation is really disgraceful!

Our family has stayed at the Commander Hotel several times in the past. Our experience has always been okay. This was not the case this time. Check in was fine. The lady at the front desk was kind enough to check us in an hour early. I have a few issues with our stay:
1. Restroom on the 1R level was disgusting with paper on the floor and urine all over the toilet and floor.
2. The indoor pool was also disgusting. There was an oily substance on top of the water. They eventually drained the pool.
3. My husband and I were sitting on the bed talking when a hotel staffer opened our room door then quickly closed it. (Seriously, what was that?)
4. We decided to check out early and had the coldest interaction with the pregnant lady at the front desk. She instructed me to put the room keys in a bin on the counter and when I requested a receipt, she said she cannot give me one and that I will get it from the 3rd party company I booked with, although my payment was made directly to the hotel. ( Is this new and only specific to this hotel?)
Still shaking my head. I hope the address and fix these issues soon.

Thank you for staying with us and taking the time to leave a review. We are glad that you were able to check in an hour early and the front desk lady was nice. We are truly sorry that the public bathroom was dirty, a housekeeper barged into your room, indoor pool had sunscreen in it, and your check out clerk was unfriendly. We are extremely short staffed at that time due to covid including have a temp service as housekeepers. We take these comments very seriously and will share them with our staff to help improve our guest services. We thank you again for staying with us and giving us the opportunity to serve you.

We stayed during off season. Our room was clean when we arrived but due to COVID, they were not doing daily housekeeping. I assume it's a combination of that and being severely short staffed.
They ask for one night with the reservation. Pay the rest when you get there. They put the balance on hold when you check in, then it finalizes after you actually check out. That’s what I’ve seen on my card.
