My mom and I visited the Commander and stayed oceanfront after she visited back and June and stayed in the cabana building. My mom absolutely loved the cabana building so I was expecting a lot when we checked in oceanfront. Don’t get me wrong, the room was very nice, it appeared clean and had a lot of good amenities like a spacious balcony, two TVs and a couch. However, it was not nearly as nice as what my mom described the cabana building to be. I applaud the Commander for their very friendly staff and clean environment. The pool is nice, albeit, a little cold. We did run into an issue with a lack of towels during a visit to the pool, which was frustrating since we had left our towels on the beach. The biggest issue we faced was the parking situation. They have quite a few lots. One lot under each building, one next to the old Beach Plaza and one across Coastal Highway. We never had a problem finding a spot next to the old Beach Plaza until we stayed out late one night and found out not only were there no spots in the Beach Plaza lot but there were none under the buildings either. We drove to the bigger lot across Coastal Highway and no one was parked there except for a guy sitting in his boat, smoking a cigarette. We decided not to chance it and drove around the block a few more times until someone ended up leaving in the Beach Plaza lot. Other than that, parking was okay, we just learned not to stay out late. They said they weren’t cleaning rooms but we had cleaning services so I’m not sure what that was about but I never complain about extra towels and trash taken out. Overall, I had a good stay. Was the oceanfront room as nice as the cabana? No. But it was still good. We’ll most likely be back next year.…
The Commander was great, the staff went out of their way to be welcoming... Location was great, close enough to walk to many attractions. Room was clean and the view was unbeatable. Would certainly consider staying here again.
Our family has been staying at the Commander for several years now, including those when the hotel was under staffed the last couple years. We've always enjoyed it there, which is why we keep returning. As usual we booked a Cabana Suite, the room was ready on time and perfectly clean when we arrived. Although we opted out of daily housekeeping service, they provided towels/trash bags/ toilet paper quickly, whenever we asked. Additionally, for those who have complained of parking being an issue, the Commander now has the lot next door available for guests to park. On top of the property being kept up with daily, it was nice to see some of the updated improvements they are making. The pool snack bar has been redone a bit, new signs, free bikes, etc... These little details along with the excellent location will always keep our family returning. I would also like to point out how kind and lovely every employee we encountered was to our family. The young ladies who work the front desk, the young men always on the go who work maintenence and the older gentlemen walking the grounds, each one always greeted us with smiles and great customer service. I have read many negative comments about the staff at the Commander and can only imagine they come from impatient customers who expect the world to stop for them. All of us can't wait to get back there next year. Great job Commander staff!…
First time back to OC in over 20 years. I found the location great, the room was clean and comfortable. We stayed ocean front suite. We were able to use the courtesy chairs at the beach very helpful. The pizza joint attached was very good. Only complaint is other guests smoking on their balcony. Although it is not allowed, there is not much anyone can do about it.
This is our second time staying here. Rate is more than double what is was last time. We had an ocean view room with 2 beds, sofa and fridge/microwave. The room was mostly clean, however the furniture was very old. Looked painted and paint was chipping badly. Lamps were rusted. Ceiling in bath was coming down. AC leaks and we had water all over the tile floor the entire stay and it ran through the entire room not just directly under the AC. Maintenance’s solution for this was to lay towels on the floor . Pool area was nice but restrooms were disgusting and not maintained throughout the day. We do like the the stay included free beach chairs but still doesn’t justify the price. We paid almost $600/night. No housekeeping during the stay. Not even to empty the trash.
Wife & I had to get away as work was being done in our home due to water damage. So we drove to OC just 2 hours away. Selected the Commander Hotel based on the best price, room size and location. Staff was great. Location on the boardwalk could not be beat along with being next to the Grotto for fresh pizza. Room had everything we wanted. My wife loved the balcony with 2 really comfortable seats so we could watch the local Seniors have their graduation parade on the boardwalk.
When you pay over $500 per night at the Commander Hotel in Ocean City, you expect a parking space. Not at the Commander. Why? Greed. They have more rooms than parking spaces so you have to drive several blocks, park in a lot, and walk back to the hotel. Also, we could not get a statement of charges when we checked out and the total charge was more than what was stated on the confirmation form. Also, several wooden rocking chairs on the deck were badly cracked and dangerous. Poor management and no understanding of customer satisfaction.
We chose this hotel for the location and indoor pool. While it did have a small indoor pool, it was murky...we did not utilize the pool. It is located on the quieter north end if the board walk with direct access to the beach. Our Ocean View with balcony room had 2 queen beds, 2 TVs, kitchenette (toaster, fridge, microwave, dish towel nd soap, some utensils, and a small pod coffee pot). Two chairs and side table on the balcony. The room was nice sized clean, but in need of detailed cleaning. Beds were comfortable with plenty of pillows. Free parking for one vehicle on site...additional parking nearby. Coffee in the lobby in the AM was good. Rocking chairs available on the patio along the boardwalk. Grotto Pizza was advertised to be open in the weekend, however it was not. We would stay here again.…
It was a beautiful weekend weather wise, so I decided to take a day/overnight trip to the beach. Stayed at the Commander hotel near 15th street. It's my second time there..i love the beach front suites that lead right out onto an elevated patio overlooking the beach and board walk. Great views and they even have rocking chairs for you to pass the time n take in the sites. If you want to hit the beach, it's literally about 30 feet away. The beach itself is huge, clean and the sand is nice too. I try not to spend much time in the room, although they are very nice. Spacious, clean, wood floors, ceiling fans...a really cool beach bungalow type ambience. The beach front suites have small kitchens..enough to prepare n store small meals. I always eat out. I treated myself to boardwalk treats the day I arrived while walking from the hotel down the boardwalk all the way to the inlet. Thrashers fries swimming in vinegar and a Khors twist I've cream cone..def classics. That night I drove over to the bay side for Mexican food. Pancho n Pete's was my choice and I wasn't disappointed. I lived in San Diego so I'm a bit of a Mexican food snob. The nachos were great and the seafood burrito I had was stuffed with fresh, sweet scallops, lobster and shrimp. I don't drink but there was a huge bar, very nice for hanging out n watching sports or getting up with friends. There was also a guacamole cart if that's your thing. I walked down to the beach that night, saw an amazing moon and star show then walked back to my room for a great night of sleep while hearing the waves crash. September is a great time for a beach trip in oc. Great weather, not too crowded and everything is pretty much open still. The next morning I woke up to an amazing sunrise and a porpoises show as I was packing up to leave. Great trip..room not cheap but there are other options. If your into good food stay away from the places near the boardwalk..find other places. If you prefer quiet, stay higher up on the streets away from the lower end of the boardwalk. The commander is great..not too close, not too far.…
The hotel is in an ok but not great location. It's on the boardwalk, but not near enough to be super convenient, not secluded enough to be quiet. Note that there are no decent convenience stores within walking distance and the "shop" in the lobby consists of some candy and a small case of bottled water and gatorade. If you want so much as a carton of milk you have a several block walk or to drive. Parking is the first challenge. There is almost none. There are two big parking lots next to the hotel but they are not for the hotel. There are maybe 10 spots tops, and maybe another 10 that are for pick up/drop off. Why there needs to be so many just for short term I have no idea. The actual parking lot for the hotel is across the highway, down a block, through a dark alley, behind some very shady apartments and some dumpsters, in a dark gravel lot. You do not want to walk to and from at night, nor will you want to carry much of anything that distance. We arrived at night and didn't have a choice and on the way back had to go past all the sketchy apartments with loud, raucous parties full of drunks and shouting. Those checking in late really should be allowed to park in the short term parking until morning at least, or the hotel needs to work out some kind of deal with whoever owns the lots next door that never did have many cars in them. You do not want to make that walk with kids! The outdoor pool is decent, but fronts the highway so it is anything but relaxing. The indoor pool is about the size of a large hot tub or kiddie pool. The rooms are decent enough. We had a corner suite and so it was larger than most. The beds are memory foam mattresses and pretty comfortable. The linens were all very clean and soft. The towels were above average. The bathroom is pretty small but functional. The balcony is larger but nothing like the pictures on the website. It does have a bump out but there is no chaise, just regular chairs, and the bump out is directly in front of the balcony so every other balcony looks directly at it. In other words, no privacy at all. Because of the parking lots on the side, and highway, it is very loud. There is no hotel next door to block the sound. My biggest objection is the late check out policy. There is none. If you want to stay past 11 you have to pay for an extra day. No one was checking into our room after us. There was no way housekeeping was going to get to our floor before late afternoon anyway (and they didn't before late), but they were very inflexible about check out. I got inconsistent information about it and then told that it at best we could check out at 11:30.…
