At the confines of three provinces, Burgundy, Champagne and Franche Comte, La Romagne, one of the richest commanderies of the Grand Prieure de Champagne reflects its towers in the placid green waters of the Vingeanne river. For the lover of nature and of history, the setting is magical. Woods, river and old stones combine happily, peacefully welcoming the off the beaten track traveler driven both by the tranquillity of the countryside and the desire to discover close by, prestigious, century old cities: Dijon, Beaune, Langres, Dole, Besancon...

What more is there to say? Subject line says it all. Off the beaten track family-run château with a real history. Spacious rooms with medieval windows etc. (But modern bathrooms.) Have breakfast in the great hall.

This fortress - built by the Templar Knights - breathes history. The rooms are rather basic (what do you expect in an almost one thousand year old building?) but very comfortable. Continental breakfast is included: boiled egg, yoghurt and bread with a choice of home made jams. Most people just stay over for one night on their way North or South, but we stayed for three nights with our three boys and we found it more than worth wile. There are beautiful castles and an impressive (underground river) cave to visit in the neighborhood. Ask the host for advice: he is a walking encyclopedia for the ancient history of the region and very willing to help. Also just staying on the property and reading a book in the garden is heavenly. The silence is impressive. The fact that staying here helps the owners to preserve such an amazing piece of heritage, is extra gratifying.

We visited this place about 6 years ago when there was no way to put a review on trip advisor, we drove from Paris and found this place as one of our best places to stay in France, GREAT host and owner of this castle, he is a great grand son of the noble people who owned this place, rooms are cozy, typical medieval times, at night you can appreciate the stars, you can even do some fire and warm yourself because it gets cold, it is in a small town and you can see every morning an old lady riding a bike deliverying fresh french bread, the breakfast was VERY complete and varied and they have plenty of parking for your car, HIGHLY recommended.

Chateau in course of restoration. Lovely quiet country location - only owls. Spacious ground floor room with painted wooden ceilings, unusually large double bed and private facilities nearby down a corridor. No shower and deep, old bath. Very basically furnished and equipped. Breakfast not up to usual French B&B standard. Whole area would have been wonderful once, complete with now disused fish farming set up. Night time great for star gazing but take a torch.

An experience like no other, this is the real deal. Everything was simple and basic which was great. It's off the beaten path and as you arrive you can really feel how hundreds of years ago people were taking the same path looking for a night of rest on their long travels. There isn't a whole lot to do in town which is why I arrived around 9pm, 3 cows starred at me like they've never seen a human. It's charming, authentic, will make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up at times (that's a whole lotta quiet for a city person). Breakfast was great. This was definitely a memorable place.
