I love the place. We had a room with a deck right over the water. The tide flows fast right under you. There are over a dozen bicycles to use at no charge, whenever you want and all in great shape. Coffee is always available, and it's a very laid-back vibe. Kayaks and canoe are available to rent as well,... More

We had booked the Harbor Master Suite (biggest in the facility) as we were part of a large group visiting the island. Check in was amusing. You found your key on a desk in the lobby and let yourself in. There were a few surprises.....there was a partially filled bucket of water in the center of the living area which,... More

We live to amuse and are pleased to learn that these guests were suitably entertained by what most guests consider a casual and appealing procedural arrangement. Just before these guests arrived we experienced an unexpected leak from a third floor deck during a particularly strong southwest gale. I would certainly not get to repair it before fall, and so put... More

Just returned from Vinalhaven Island, ME staying at this motel. There are not many choices but this is a good one in a rustic setting and easy walking distance to the few dining choices on this island. The room was comfortable with a small attached kitchen. The property is vintage but perfectly located for harbor views and a wonderful semi... More

My wife and I enjoyed our stay at the Tidewater. It's not fancy, but has a great location and the owner, Phil, was accommodating and friendly — he's a low-key, quiet, smart guy, and he was very helpful. The room was comfortable, the porch overlooked the water and the tide ran in and out UNDER the hotel. The sound takes some... More

Getting to Vinalhaven is quite a ferry ride from Rockland, Maine. We really enjoyed the 1 hour and 15 minute ride to and from the island. We stayed in Room 14 on the first floor and had a great view of Carver's Harbor from our deck which is packed with lobster boats coming and going. It is a lobstering village... More

Husband and I rented bikes here with the hopes of seeing the island that way. Don't be tempted. They're all ancient beater cruisers & do not mix with hills. Splurge on renting good bikes from the mainland & take them on the ferry with you. It's worth every dime bc the island is beautiful!

Although this is the only motel on the island, its still great. Its unique, every room is a bit different. The water rushes underneath the hotel which provides a nice calming and relaxing sound. The views are extraordinary and the people are friendly. There is not other place like the tidewater motel.

This is a beautiful island to relax and spend some quality time with friends and/or family. There are not a lot of distractions. Everyone is friendly and welcoming! The hotel advertises free wifi, but my phone and laptop couldn't connect in our room (my husband's phone connected only on the balcony). The rooms were clean and comfortable. The tv in... More

Understood there would be two beds a d pullout couch, had 1 bed and 2 couches. Trustme, at 73 I'm not built for the couch any more. Living room had a leak in the ceiling which wasn't bad so much as bothersome. There was one eatery in the evening, Harbor Gawker, and one in the morning, (back behind the strip... More

We did not tell this guest the Harbormaster's Berth had two beds. It never has and we would not misrepresent it. I'm sorry the living room had a small leak. If it were me I'd have reported it. When we acknowledged their reservation (long before they arrived) we did so with a written description of available island eateries. If they'd... More

Vinalhaven is quite a ferry ride from mainland Maine but we love visiting everytime we are in Maine. It is a lobstering village and has such a pretty harbor. The motel is clean and could use a little updating but it is clean and we purchased lobster and cooked it in our little kitchenette. The breakfast is continential. The reason... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The Tidewater Motel is built on a bridge separating Carver's Harbor to the south from Carver's Pond, its tidal estuary, to the north. The same rush of ocean water coming and going right under your harborside room once powered a blacksmith shop and grist mill on the site. Few views can equal those at the Tidewater and few places are as relaxing; the ebb and flow is nature's own sedative. Still, the world's most productive lobster fleet, anchored right outside your window, gets an early start, so you may not want to sleep in. Open year-round, the Tidewater is the island's only motel. If you want to be closer to the water, you'll have to get wet. ... more   less
