The Tidewater is built on a bridge separating Carver's Harbor to the south from Carver's Pond, its tidal estuary, to the north. The same rush of ocean water coming and going right under your harborside room once powered a blacksmith shop and grist mill on the site. Few views can equal those at The Tidewater and few places are as relaxing; the ebb and flow is nature's own sedative. Still, the world's most productive lobster fleet, anchored right outside your window, gets an early start, so you may not want to sleep in. If you want to be closer to the water, you'll have to get wet.

This is a remarkable surprise in a fantastic setting. We had the tide running beneath our room, fish schooling under the porch and fish feeding on the schools, beautiful views out into the harbor and just the perfect downtime and ralaxation. This is a very unique place with great owner/operaters who are most willing to help with whatever questions one has. we found Vinalhaven to be a special place to visit and had great food down the street at Dot and Millie's and across the street at Bernice's. there are good shops and galleries in very close distance to the hotel and easy access to the taxi service which was also great. I am already thinking about my next visit. All that said, this is not the Ritz (thank goodness) and while we do enjoy that type place from time to time it would be out of place here. Tidewater is as comfortable as one could ever want and a fraction of the cost! My only complaint is that the breakfast while good enough could have whole grain choices for the bread and or pastries.. That is really a piddling complaint!!

From the reviews I read before booking, I understood it was dated, but the owner was so pleasant and willing to help find a suitable arrangement for our family of 8 that I thought the stay would be ok. Wrong. At check-in, we were informed that previous guests had made our rooms unsuitable so we were moved to various others rooms meaning my children were not only not next door to us, but it one case, in the completely opposite side of the building. Railings were broken on the deck, finishing work was haphazard, and to top it off, the smoke detector was missing from my room (surely there’s a code for that!). We were in the off season so there was no breakfast, the coffee in the room was only decaf and the fridge was stinky. We were supposed to have a kitchen, but with our new arrangement that wasn’t possible. The view was lovely but can’t make up for all the other problems.

We had a second floor room. Yes, it is a bit dated- we don’t care. We had a small kitchen with stove and refrigerator so we could walk across the street and get groceries we didn’t bring with us and fix some meals on our own. We have stayed here several times and know what to expect. It is a working island- not a resort which is exactly what we like. We were here off-season so the usual kayaks and bikes and morning food in the gathering room were closed up for the season but we come here for the peace, quiet and views of harbor, islands ands boats- all in abundance. Thank you Tidewater!!!

Beautiful view, love the balcony. Hearing the tide rushing in and out at night is the best! Watching the fishermen go out on their boats from your balcony is awesome! Breakfast is really nicely setup in the gathering room which also has a super view. Just love that place and I definitely love Vinalhaven!

I am 75 and have traveled all over the world. This is, by far, the very worst accommodation I have ever stayed in. Traveling with a friend, we booked two rooms. Upon check-in we were given two room keys. Together we went to the first room, entered, only to find another couple in the room. Back to front desk and were told, sorry, wrong room. We demanded that the occupants of the "wrong room" receive an apology from the motel. Two new room keys, #6 and #14. Entered #6 which was reasonably clean, although several flies. Then the French doors to the ocean blew open. The front desk attendant could not secure the doors, despite repeated attempts. He offered room #7 (or #8). We entered to check out the newly offered room and the bed was unmade. Front desk attendant assured us it was clean and we challenged him. He then offered to check the computer and assured us it was unoccupied. Again, we challenged him because we were certain that it was occupied and that the occupants had not returned. The attendant offered to check into this and in the meantime offered to put a roll-away in room #14. OK, not our first choice, but there were no other rooms on the island and the last ferry had departed, so our options were: try to fix the door in #6; stay in room #14 together; or, one of us sleep in the car. We then went to #14, only to find that the front desk attendant had put the roll-away in the wrong room. Turns our that #7 (or #8) was actually occupied and the front desk attendant would have put one of us into this room. At that point we decided that one of us would sleep in #6 because there was a pile of lumber outside the door to the room that could be used to secure the French doors to the ocean. Turns out that the French doors kept blowing open b/c the top and bottom door bolts were not secured. Asked the front desk attendant for a screwdriver to secure the door bolts, but, he couldn’t find one. No problem, the tire jack rod from the rental car did the trick. So, now we have two rooms, reasonably clean, except for the entrances which looked like they had not been cleaned since the beginning of the summer, and, of course, the flies. One of us got situated in #14 and we then realized that the smoke detector had been removed from the room leaving bare wires. With no other choice, one of us spent the night without smoke/fire alarm protection. This is clearly a violation of code and it will be reported to the Vinalhaven authorities. Bottom line. If you have any other option for accommodation on Vinalhaven, take it!

Thought we were at the wrong motel when we drove in. Pictures from the website are magnificent compared to the actual motel. Me and my husband are so disappointed as this was the highlight of our vacation. Room was not vacuumed, towels didn’t smell clean, coffee pot/cup was dirty from the previous stay. I would have slept in our car if the sheets hadn’t been clean. Morning coffee was not hot and had an odd flavor. We were not adventurous enough to try the provided breakfast. Cannot see the sunset or rise but the harbor is sweet. Which was the only great part of our stay. One-half step above a motel 6. Communication between the family here is not good. I’m unsure how this has such amazing reviews. Never again..

We chose Vinalhaven for an impromptu overnight getaway. The Tidewater was just what we had in mind…great location, tidy room equipped with bathroom, mini fridge, microwave, coffee pot, comfy bed with cotton sheets, private outdoor sitting area with gorgeous view of the harbor and sounds of rushing rides below. Two skylights open the space further. Great self serve breakfast options in The Gathering Place, friendly and helpful staff. We opted not to take a car and that was a good choice. Between the Tidewater’s proximity to the few shops and eateries and many walking trails and land preserves, we stayed quite entertained! Looking forward to a return to Tidwater (with bikes) same time next year!

We were happy to be at Vinalhaven for a family gathering at a nearby small village house and needed 2 rooms so we could celebrate with our eldest family member and provide assistance as needed. Room #5 was perfect with close car access and a balcony to enjoy the harbor views. We loved seeing the many lighting effects, having artist/photographers in the group. Fog rainbows, and slow burns and gains to clear light were fun to watch and the motion of the tidal water running under the rooms had a soothing sound. Room conditions and the help yourself culture reminded me of the uniquely loved places that get rated highly by national geographic photographers. It's not about the amenities and service related pampering. It's about the island culture and access to the real experience of the place. We were prepared to be independent and did not need to ask for anything so we were comfortable and pleased with our stay. I think the more visitors get to know the island, and the local grocery store; and as they develop connections with people and the beauty of hiking/biking/boating/walking spots at the island, the happier they will be. The charm of it all will keep visitors coming back.

God's country awaits the traveler. Have been going there many years and it never gets old. Sarah and family do a great job with this rustic motel which has been in her family for many years.. A ferry ride from Rockland adds to the adventure on a nice day. Will be returning until I can't !!

This was our 7th or 8th stay. I cannot understand the negative or mediocre reviews. The property is on an island isolated from the mainland. You cannot expect perfection. The property is clean, comfortable, well-appointed. The setting is amazingly dramatic. The hosts (a family owned business) are very friendly and accommodating. The prices are reasonable given the challenges of being on a remote island. Since the transition to the next generation, the hospitality has risen to the next level. We're coming back next year.
