The Tidewater is built on a bridge separating Carver's Harbor to the south from Carver's Pond, its tidal estuary, to the north. The same rush of ocean water coming and going right under your harborside room once powered a blacksmith shop and grist mill on the site. Few views can equal those at The Tidewater and few places are as relaxing; the ebb and flow is nature's own sedative. Still, the world's most productive lobster fleet, anchored right outside your window, gets an early start, so you may not want to sleep in. If you want to be closer to the water, you'll have to get wet.

This if the 3rd or 4th time staying here. In the past I always felt it was charming, simple and well run. The last time I was here was 3 years ago and I don't think any maintenance has been done since. I understand it is an old building but it just seemed pretty run down. It didn't really feel clean. The carpets seemed dingy and the one that runs outside between the rooms and the office should be ripped out. The lock on our door did not work. Our bed was visibly saggy. My neighbors deck had a support that was just dangling and not attached to piling.Bathrooms were dingy. I wish they hadn't tried to paint over the tile because now the paint is peeling away and makes it look worse. I have loved this place so much in the past and I hope that they can spruce it up the way it was when the previous owner ran it. I know these are hard times, but you can only defer maintenance for so long. I just read the co-owner is a contractor. I hope updates are forthcoming.

It's now Christmas time, nearly 4 months since this negative but honest and caring observations. T here is no excuse for having waited so long to respond. The reviewer was right and, in spite of Covid and attendant circumstances, we are back on top of things. Please continue your faithful allegiance and let us know how you feel next time.

The views and breeze in this room were priceless. The room was clean and it is the third floor so the view was exceptional at sunset and sunrise. The low tide noise was very relaxing. The room is a little dated, but we still loved it. If a little love and time was spent this would be a 5 all day long! Please keep up the good work and keep the romance alive. We would recommend staying here if you can!

We've been coming here for over 20 years and are pleased to see that the next generation of the family has taken up the mantle. Tidewater is always comfortable, clean, reasonably appointed (fridge, microwave, tv, coffee maker). But the setting is the amazing part. If you're coming to the island, you do have to calibrate your expectations. Services are limited. You are coming for the natural beauty and quiet. If you are expecting Kennebunkport-lite you will be disappointed. But if you bring your own gas cook stove, your lobster pot, you can go down to the co-op, procure lobsters for amazing low prices, and have great meals every night. The sea kayaker and hiker and beach comber will love the island.

Beautiful location? Check. Quiet? Check. Rustic and charming? Check. 5-Tar Ritz Carlton? Nope. But if you want peace and quiet, a comfy room and a gorgeous view, you will find it here. Yes, it could use a few updates but we loved it. They even let us borrow a car for a day to explore the island. We would stay again and recommend. Thank you for a great weekend

We spent a night a the Tidewater and had an incredible harbor view from our room. The bed was comfortable but the bathroom is extremely small and diffiuclt to negotiate. The light fixture over the sink didn't work and there was some strange metal thing attached to the wall that looked like a cup holder and was full of something that looked like soap scum. It was really nasty looking. There were no gluten free or dairy free choices for the breakfast which is stated as a deluxe continental breakfast. There were 2 cold cereal choices, instant oatmeal, 1 banana and one orange at the breakfast bar. No one was there to refill anything and we were there at 6:30 am. We read that breakfast is from 6-10. Maybe we arrived too early. While we found the staff very friendly, it was obvious that they need more help. The building is in need of repair and is not very clean. It was nice to have use of the bikes and a plus that they shuttle you to and from the ferry.

Room Tip: I would choose a room on one of the higher levels for a better view and less noise.
