Known for its unique charm and spectacular view of the Penobscot Bay islands, the Inn on the Harbor on Deer Isle offers a perfect romantic waterfront retreat. Built in the 1880s and perched right on the edge of picturesque Stonington Harbor, Inn on the Harbor captures the very essence of Maine's Downeast island life. Most of the individually decorated guestrooms face the sea and enjoy gorgeous views of Isle au Haut, the Windjammers and the island's fishing fleet. Guests can relax on the spacious flower-covered deck extending out into the harbor and enjoy the tide rising and falling beneath the Inn. They can fall asleep to the sound of nearby Mark Island Light's foghorn and wake up to the lobstermen heading out to sea. Several of our rooms have wood burning fireplaces and/or private decks. Our accommodations are relaxed and comfortable, all with private baths and sitting areas. The coastal atmosphere, with fresh salt air and brilliant sunny skies, encourages many of our guests to simply put their feet up and relax while watching Stonington's bustling waterfront. This is Maine's Downeast island life at its best.

Detailed Reviews
I barely want to write this review, as I would prefer to keep this a secret, lest perhaps I have a hard time getting a reservation for my next (and the next, and the next and the next) stay. Wedged into such a beautiful setting the Inn on the Harbor offers a gorgeous view, spacious and immaculately kept rooms. Dana, the innkeeper, has a wonderfully caring presence and seems to read minds, arriving with just what is needed moments after I had the thought. She is a conscientious host, thoughtful and present in a manner that gives expanded meaning to the term hospitality. Stonington (somehow) has been able to avoid the crass over touristification (I made that up) that many seacoast towns have suffered. A wonderful experience. Go.

We stayed two nights in the Mary Day room which has great views of the harbor. A high quality pair of binoculors was provided with the room so that we could get a close up of the lobster boats going and coming. The room is large with a great bathroom. Dana is an outstanding hostess, anticipating every need.

We stayed at Inn on the Harbor in the middle of August. You can't get any closer to the ocean without getting your feet wet. The room was spotlessly clean and the decor comfortable. Nice breakfast items were left at the room each morning to go with the in room coffee supplied. The hosts were pleasant, helpful, and very Covid 19 conscious. We hope to return this Fall to see the foliage.

We arrived and no one was there to welcome us and show us to the room. The keys were in a box and people standing on the street showed us how to find the room.
Breakfast was awful (smallest apple ever and a sweet role in a paper bag hug on the door at 8 am.
The room smelled musty and the TV was the size of a laptop computer.
The area outside the room smelled of spoiled fish.
It was really not a very good view of the waterfront.
The owner was very argumentative and told us a room in New York would be triple the price.
Be prepared to listen to diesel engine lobster boats start up at 4 in the morning.

We spent a few days at Inn on the Harbor in October 2021 and honestly it was one of the best places we have ever stayed. Knowing that It has been around a long time I was expecting our room to appear much older than it did, but we wouldn't have cared considering the location and the view. It was very clean and gorgeous with a very comfortable bed and every detail taken care of, including an umbrella which we didn't need, but was such a nice touch. We had a great talk with Dana one of the owners and she was so nice and kind and eager to help us enjoy the area. They make it very easy to get whatever you might need each day of your stay. They are also very careful with their Covid protocol which was much appreciated. We can't wait to go back.

Beautifully maintained, quiet setting, exceptional views of the bay. We stayed here two nights recently and could not have been happier with the overall experience. A morning bag of muffins and fruit is provided, and your are within walking distance of shops and restaurants. Charming establishment.

I wanted to go to Stonington to experience an old-time fishing village, and the Inn on the Harbor was right up this alley. It exceeded my expectations with a huge deck overlooking the working harbor, binoculars, and the gentle sound of harbor bells all night. Room was immaculate, comfortable, and quiet. You get the feeling that a lot of people come here every year, making it a tradition. Although short-staffed and limited on indoor dining due to Covid, the owner is very friendly and helpful. If you are looking to be pampered at a twee coastal resort, this is not your place. If you like being in touch with history and authentic Maine, it is. Note that dining options on weekdays are quite limited on the island, so plan accordingly (fridge in room helpful).

We have stayed here more than once. The rooms are extremely clean, comfortable and nicely decorated. Sitting on the back deck watching the lobster boats is one of our favorite things. The Inn is located right on Main Street which makes it really easy to walk in either direction. Stonington is a hidden gem and we plan on going back every year and staying at the Inn.

We are native Mainers and were looking for a cozy spot for a couples getaway. Although we’ve lived in Maine for decades, we’ve never visited Stonington and that turns out to be a serious oversight.
The Inn on the Harbor is easy to find and as cozy and romantic as it gets. Our room (and it looks like all the rooms) had sweeping views of a classic Maine harbor complete with working lobster boats and stony, pine tree topped islands. The front window was like looking at a giant post card.
The bed was comfortable and the room also had a sitting area with a love seat to enjoy the view. The bathroom was roomy, too.
There are restaurants in easy walking distance (we recommend the Fin and Fern) and a cafe right across the street for breakfast.
We also took a walk in the Tennis Preserve with it’s spectacular moss forest. It was as green as an Irish movie.
Bottom line? We booked again for next spring and we’re looking forward to it already.

It's a charming spot on a fishing harbor. Room was larger and more comfortable than expected. Not overly quiet: one side is the street with a little traffic starting early in the night (not a real nuisance though) and terrace is not really private as other guests or visitors walk by.
Covid times: owner very responsive by email or messages. Breakfast not ok: with 10 rooms or so in such a small building, it would be easy for one person to deliver at least fresh coffee or tea, and decent pastries or yogurt, etc. Just cheap. There is a coffee shop nearby or a diner across the street (did not try).

Road noise is not a problem. Location is great.
Hi, sorry just seen your question. The B and B does do breakfast but just cereal and toast. There is a diner across the street which does breakfast and dinner. There is also a wine shop/restaurant called something like wines by the bay that does dinner some evenings.
