A comfortable, homey B&B located in quiet Southwest Harbor within walking distance of several excellent restaurants. Gretchen, the owner, is the real attraction. She graciously shares her home with guests. She manages to find things of common interest amongst all age groups to insure good breakfasts and great conversations. The bedrooms were comfortable and spacious with a good wi-fi .... More

Thank you Judy for your review and so glad to hear you enjoyed your stay. For a quite small town we do have a wonderful variety of excellent restaurants, and all within walking distance. Interesting breakfast conversations which I can usually hear from the kitchen. More

Spacious common rooms for conversation, TV, distant water view. Hostess anxious to please, but... bring your own toiletries as they were in short supply (one tissue in the box, no body soap provided, hand soap close to empty, body lotion in pretty dispenser was watery, shampoo left overs). Threads hanging off hand towel. Shower was jerrymandered, stair and upstairs carpets... More

Gretchen is a delightful innkeeper. She has a wealth of world experiences and knowledge that makes for great conversation. Having been traveling for two weeks and staying at all B&B's, we have quite an ability to compare B&B lodgings. Speaking specifically about the Inn, you stay in the home of the innkeeper, using her living area for your living area.... More

Gretchen is a very welcoming and friendly hostess - most willing to help in anyway. She is by far the best part of staying at Penury Hall. But I seem to be the only reviewer who comments on the house itself - it is very tired and worn. In comparison to other "old" B&B's, I was quite surprised to see... More

This is a very nice old home located right downtown across the street from the main section of town. The owner Gretchen is a delight and worth the stay just to talk with her during breakfast. The bedrooms are spacious and clean, and the rooms have a private bath that is located across the hall from the room.

I'm always pleased when my guests enjoy my older home as much as I do. It is ideally located in town and after a day of touring in Acadia being able to walk to a variety of restaurants is a bonus in itself. More

Our three night stay at Penury Hall was very relaxing and comfortable. With just three guest rooms, Gretchen, the Innkeeper made us feel right at home. Her cinnamon french toast, herb scrambled eggs and eggs benedict were delicious! She provided suggestions for our primary interests of hiking (views from Mansell Mtn with descent on Perpendicular Trail were awesome!) and kayaking... More

My boyfriend and I were traveling to Maine to celebrate my birthday. We were looking for a more laid back area to avoid mass crowds of people and Southwest Harbor was perfect. It was quiet but also close to everything - restaurants, hiking, shopping, etc. We absolutely LOVED Gretchen. Instantly her home felt like ours as well. The room was... More

We went up to see our son who moved up to Maine in May went online and found Penury Hall B&B. Gretchen was so nice and made us feel right at home as soon as we walked through the door. Breakfast every morning was very good and filling and our son and his girlfriend were able to join us each... More

My husband and I really enjoyed our stay with you. We were glad to avoid the crowds at Bar Harbor, and your home was a lovely launching place to explore Maine. I particularly loved feeling like we were locals. The breakfasts were wonderful- your a great cook. To anyone who would care to visit, this is a truly lovely B&B... More

Southwest Harbor is a cute little town full of great restaurants and interesting shops as well banks, a grocery store, etc - but not the HORDES of tourists that Bar Harbor has. Penury Hall is full of art, and Gretchen, the owner and hostess has very good taste. The bedrooms are comfy, as are the beds. We had the admirals's... More
