My cousin and I spent two wonderful days here, while exploring the Maine and New Hampshire coastal towns (Portsmouth was our favourite with its historic buildings). Mark and Mathilde were our hosts at the Riverhouse and made us feel very welcome. But the highlight had to be Kit, their very friendly dog with a laid back personality.
We’re so glad that we didn’t book a place on the coast, where all the towns were very busy and bustling with tourists. The serene calm of the Riverhouse property was the perfect place to relax at the end of the day.

We are so glad you enjoyed our special spot. Avoiding the congestion on the coast is why we built here. Close enough to hop in on many of the beaches and restaurants, but away from the daily gridlock. I came from NYC to be here, serenity and convenience is what we have found. Thank you both for spending time with Kit.

During our first stay a few years ago, we fell in love with The Riverhouse… not a BNB, not a hotel, not a bunk house. IT IS however, the PERFECT place for those seeking a relaxed, peaceful stay in a comfortable home like setting or quirky custom barn loft, convenient to the Dover/Portsmouth/York/Kittery area.

During your stay you may: see Eagles flying with coffee on the terrace or personal lofted barn veranda; enjoy a cool dip in the local swimming hole; discover many great area restaurants; take a trail run at the park down the road; or even make new friends in Mark and Matilde by enjoying their company and exchanging stories in the evening like we did. The rooms are unique, clean, comfortable and private.

That’s why when we learned our power at home was going to out for an undetermined amount of time due to the tropical storm in CT; we couldn’t think of a better place to “live” and work during a period of electric uncertainty. We quickly gave Mark and Matilde a call to see if they had room for us for a week prior to our scheduled vacation in upper Maine. They said YES!!! We considered ourselves lucky!

Thank you both for welcoming us in to your home again on such short notice!

If you are the get in, get out, fridge in your room and valet parking type of traveller, nagging on about the lack of vanilla flavoured decaf and a free lick of a Bernese mountaindog - please, for the rest of us - do not bother!

This is the large, tastefully decorated and top quality fitted home of Mark. It is in such an adorable spot, that we fell in love it it the moment we entered.

Top that we a most generous host, opening a bottle of wine for us and his friend (and a top notch local beer for me). And if you like a good conversation - you can have that too.

In economics they say "there is no such thing as a free lunch" (and Mark knows a lot about that topic too, if you are into that sort of thing) ... but that statement is wrong as far as your stay at the riverhouse is concerned. We had a great stay and the only thing we regret is that we could not stay longer.

If you appreciate the nice things in life, go there!

My husband and I have stayed at this lovely bed and breakfast twice. The owners Mark and Sylvia have done a terrific job of creating a peaceful, relaxing atmosphere. When we woke last year we were treated to a view of a deer and her fawn along the banks of the river behind the house. Mark has continued his landscaping work in both front and back of the area. The owners along with their dogs make it feel more like visiting friends than paying customers. The place is furnished nicely with paintings and comfy seating. Perfect for those who seek quiet and something a little "off the beaten path."

A group of us decided that an overnight motorcycle trip to Maine was a much needed break from reality. Riverhouse is not an AirBnb or an Inn. While the food and service is outstanding, it’s not a place where you are pampered and spoiled in the conventional sense. You are pampered because Riverhouse is a home and it’s owners, Mark and Matilde, are welcoming you into their lives when you choose to stay there and they choose to have you. The rooms are beautiful and the views and property amazing. If they cater your meal, you won’t be disappointed. The beer, wine, coffee and the like are just what the doctor ordered after a long day. And while they certainly clean up, make sure you’re taken care of, and make you feel welcomed, what makes Riverhouse feel special is that you have the potential in making life long friends with Mark and Matilde. They operate Riverhouse not because they need to run a business, but because they want to meet interesting people and share stories and travels. It is a very special and unique place that everyone should have the privilege of experiencing. One piece of advice, if you are someone who lives with a sense of entitlement and an air of arrogance for the things that your money can buy then I’d recommend staying clear of this little gem of a find. Mark and Matilde won’t want you there and you’ll ruin the vibe. On the other hand, if you want to be welcomed into an exquisite home and made to feel like you’re the most important person in the world to a new set of friends, then get their as quickly as you can.

This place was just what my husband and I were looking for to get away for a couple of days. We enjoyed a beautiful room with high end appointments and great views of the river. Mark was a delightful host and we enjoyed our conversations with him very much. We had a lovely light fresh breakfast each morning with items from local farms with the best coffee ever. All rooms are spacious and beautiful with gorgeous private bathrooms and have views of the River. Within half hour to outstanding beaches of Ogunquit, York and Kennebunkport as well as Kittery outlets and very close to nice hiking areas such as Vaughn State Park a short walk away. We are glad we found this gem!

Mark and Sylvia are gracious hosts and their property is beautifully situated. Their friendly dogs - River and Charlie - are a bonus. The bridge adjacent to the property is currently closed so play close attention to which end of Vine Street you approach from. Local restaurants in South Berwick are a pleasant ~1 mile walk away.

I planned to visit South Berwick to see the place where my first several generations of ancestors began life in the USA. I could not have chosen a better place than the Riverhouse! It was within walking distance to the Old Fields Cemetery and Leigh's Mill Pond, both of which were a part of my family history. Mark & Mathilde were lovely and welcoming hosts and provided much information about the local area. Thank you, Mark & Mathilde and please let us reciprocate at our home in Bee Cave, TX!
