I cannot get over how much fun I have each year I visit! Steve and Amy are outstanding and their camps feel like home. The beds are comfortable, the kitchen is super functional (fully equipped), clean, cozy, welcoming and all around exactly what a cabin type home away from home should be. If you ever need anything they are right there and ready to help in any way they can. I always look forward to staying with them. Each year brings so many new memories and adventures. Thank you guys for making my fourth memorable year after year. See you soon!

My wife and I have been coming to Gray Ghost Camps for a good number of years.
Amy and Steve are the best hosts and make you feel right at home.
Wild life is plenty (if you don't mind searching up in the logging roads). Also at times right off the main road.
The nights are quiet and very dark and most often your neighbors in other cabins are super friendly.
The cabins offer everything you'll need and quite comfortable..
If you are looking for a peaceful and adventurous time away you can't go wrong.

Owner's do everything they can to make you happy here. If there was one place left on earth I could go before I die it would be Gray Ghost Camps. The way the light hits the water in the morning, the isolated call of the loon as it echoes through the cabins, and that perfect "crack" you hear as you open your 13th bud light makes this place the best destination in the great state of Maine.

Although I booked the place for $100 per night, the owner charged me $160, reduced to $140 due to a computer glitch. The cabin is very shoddy: Whole cabin was tilted, windows and door did not close, hot water pipes were exposed (one of my kids burned himself on it), carpets were sticky, lights did not work, remotes for TV did not work, vacuum did not work. We had to put towels on the dirty furniture so we could sit on it.
Along the riverfront, which is the best feature of this place, there was poop all over the place. Yes, poop. Even though the owner knew about it, she only cleaned it up when I complained. At first, I did not complain about the cabin--because for a $100 bucks you would expect some shoddiness--but at check out the owner raised the rate to $160, then I complained but she did not care. She did send someone to clean the poop and wanted to argue whether it was dog poop or goose. Does it matter? My kids were running through it barefoot before I found it.
Asides from the owner, the people are very nice. The place provides kayaks and canoes and inner tubes. They even drove us a mile up the road so we could float back down on the river--without charging us. If you stay there, you either sit outside with poop or sit inside with sticky furniture--your pick.

Response from Amy L, Owner at Gray Ghost Camps
Responded Aug 16, 2015
What Alex failed to mention in this (his one and only) TripAdvisor Review is that he reserved a cabin for two adults and two small children, under 12 years. When we provided him and his family with complimentary shuttle service to the river tubing excursion it was clear that he had "snuck in" a 3rd adult. This exceeds the occupancy limit of Grizzly King, Cabin 6. Our rates are subject to the number of guests, not how many people you can fit into our smallest cabin. http://www.grayghostcamps.com/gray-ghost-camps/cabins/ If Alex had been truthful upon his booking or prior to his arrival then the rate would have been accurately reflected and we would have offered a larger, more comfortable cabin for his party of 5. We feel the $129, plus tax, nightly rate is more than fair for a party of 5 in a water front cabin with free use of the kayaks, canoes, stand up paddleboards, tubes and complimentary shuttle to the river. I am sorry that this guest did not feel the same. He only complained when I caught him in his deception. His complaint was dog poop and I asked him to show me what he was referring too so we could address the problem with the dog owner before the next guests arrived. No signs of dog were found, but rather the Canadian Geese that had made a short visit early that morning. Our staff cleared the 5 acres of campground (as we do daily) with a total of 18 fresh goose droppings removed. Grizzly King is a summer cabin that is popular for those who want to be close to nature, as it sits 30 feet from the water. The guests that stayed prior to this family for a week, wished to stay another full week and left a comment card that the cabin was PERFECT. The guests that arrived after, stay for two full weeks every summer and request this cabin a year in advance. We understand that a nature and activity based vacation is not for everyone. We appreciate feedback on the remote control, light bulbs and were able to re-secure the vacuum nozzle. The water pipes are all pvc, so I am surprised and sympathetic to hear of any burn. The Grizzly King is scheduled for renovations in Spring 2017. Sincerest Regards, Amy Lane, Gray Ghost Camps

I waited a long time to write this review because the people who own this place are just so very nice. But in the end, I feel there needs to be an honest recount of our experience.
The cabin we stayed in needed some TLC. And frankly, it looked like many of them did. The beds had no padding , and the mattress was not great quality. The cabin was pretty well stocked with cooking utensils and whatnot, for 3 people, beyond that, we may have had trouble.
There were two beyond threadbare recliners in our cabin that took up way too much room and skeeved me to sit on. The owner explained that regular customers who rent in winter have requested she not get rid of them. OK. But then store them away because they are gross. A cheap pleather overstuffed love seat that had springs long past their prime completed the decor.
This is right off a main road. And our cabin, I believe it was 10, but I could be mistaken, it was called Near Enough, I think. If the name means near enough to a fairly busy road with logging trucks barreling up and down from about 5 AM , then yes it is near enough for that. This place is NOT at all as secluded as the web site leads you to believe. The road is steps from he cabin, and while you view gorgeous Moose River from the cabins, you also view yet another road. So if seclusion is what you seek, you may want to stay elsewhere.
My biggest complaint was the lack of advertised amenities the camp supposedly offered. We looked forward to renting their Pontoon Boat but it had just broken down days before our stay. The owner had answered specific questions about us renting it so they knew we planned to rent it, yet no one informed us it would not be available. That did help us find another location to rent one from and so we did get our day on the lake.
My daughter wanted to try paddle boarding, and supposedly these were offered for free with your stay. Unfortunately, the boards were caked in duck waste. Disgusting. I mentioned this to the owner at the end of our stay and she sheepishly apologized and said she had meant to clean them off but had not had the time. ??? This is a great lead in to my next issue.
We were told if we wanted to tube down the river just swing by the office anytime and someone would drive us up the river with the tubes and pick us up at the end. We "swung by several times" To try the tubing, to try to get the paddle boards cleaned and for other minor needs but the owners were NEVER around! We learned they were rescuing an old ski resort and planning a fund raiser that weekend at the resort. Also, the owner is a real estate agent so she shows houses on weekends. The husband flies a sea plane and was picking people up one day. Excuse me, but I think you may be wearing to many hats! This is Labor Day weekend and you are sold out! You promise a lot and deliver very little. And for those not familiar with Rockwood and the Moosehead region let me tell you, nature is really all there is to do. If you go to a place with a plan to rent a boat one day, tube one day and paddle board one day, and can only do one of the three, you are left with a good deal of time on your hands! All of this made for a lot of disappointment.
My husband loved his stay. He is a country boy at heart so just being in the woods with a fire pit is enough for him. My daughter and I would have liked a bit more to do but we did get to relax although boredom did creep in. We al were expecting a bit more seclusion. I would love to know when the last time they washed the mattress padding/cover thing was because it came un tucked from under the mattress and there was a ring of dirt where it folded under . I tucked it back in and pushed it out of my head.
I really don't like writing this review, because the owners were, as I said, so nice. I tend to think they bit off more than they can chew while we were up there and just spread themselves too thin. But after reading the glowing reviews I wonder if this was a one time thing or if the same people just come back year after year and are as complacent as the owners are about things. Torn screens, cracked window panes show a lack of caring. When we woke up Sunday morning to a septic truck pumping out the tank and a horrible odor, I had to shake my head when the owner again, sheepishly admitted, it was overdue for a pumping and she was "hoping' it would have made it. Really???
So, it really is with heavy heart that I have to write this honest review about our experience at Gray Ghost. Perhaps we just went on an off time. But as the saying goes, you only get one chance to make a first impression. In all fairness, my husband said he enjoyed his stay. he grew up spending his summers in a cabin like this that his family ownerd and so he is more accustomed to worn and "well-used" But If I am going to pay to stay someplace I would like fresh and well-maintained.
The firepit, wood-burning stove in the cabin and view of Moose River were all awesome and it was mostly clean. If you want a rustic cabin that looks old and well-lived in and want nature without complete seclusion and not reliant on the ammenities offered, this place will suit you. The price is certainly right.

Response from Amy L, Owner at Gray Ghost Camps
Responded Dec 16, 2014
We greatly appreciate feedback both from first time guests and those that have been staying with us for years. The comment card you completed in the cabin back in August was thoughtful as was your review on other travel sites. We have already replaced the furniture in the cabin and have plans to update all of the beds, bedding, kitchen and floors in Near 'Nough, Cabin 10 this spring. At the time of your reservation, this cabin was the only vacancy, That being said, out of our 13 rental cabins, this cabin is the furthest from the water. We do offer a map of the cabin locations to give first time guests an opportunity to see the layout. http://www.grayghostcamps.com/maps/ It was nice to talk with you so much and share stories of your philanthropy, school, real estate and future move to Maine. I shared my stories with you as well. I recall you making several visits to our office, so it is not fair to say we are never there. I told you at arrival that we would be hosting a 5k Color Run that Sunday and invited you and your daughter to attend, so I apologize if we missed you. We do live remotely and sometimes have to leave the property, we always leave our cell #'s and are only a phone call away. Regarding the paddleboards, they are normally kept on racks out of the water. That particular weekend, they had been left tied to the docks. Our duck friends thought they made a perfect perch, which seemed cute are first and made a great picture, but you are right, ducks are not made to sit on paddleboards. Again with your feedback, we now keep them with the kayaks on the racks. You are also right that we do not live in the city and do not have public utilities, like septic. Our tanks are private and need to be pumped prior to winter every season. We normally schedule that when the cabins are empty in the fall. We had a very busy summer season and the capacity did not carry us until after Labor Day as normal. So I apologize again for that inconvenience, but thankful our local company was able to accommodate the fix so quickly over the holiday weekend. Steve was not out taking guests for airplane rides, but hopes to someday so I wanted to clarify that. He was flight training one morning during your stay, while I stayed in the office. Your sharp comments did solidify my decision to step down from the local Chamber of Commerce Board that I had served for the past year. I assure you our passion is to provide our visitors with an affordable personal experience in a remote, natural setting. Again with your feedback, I feel we are even better now than we were at the climax of our busiest season in 16 summers in business. If you are in the area again looking for a cabin on the water with kayaks, canoes, stand up paddleboards, awesome views and firepits, all for $40 per night per person, you know where to find us. Happy Holidays from Maine. Amy Lane, Gray Ghost Camps

I vacationed at GGC with 3 teenagers in August. We had lots of space, and all the essentials, in our cabin. We were steps from a tributary of Moosehead Lake. There were kayaks and stand up paddleboards right at the dock. The best, though, were the firepits, and firewood was for sale by the office.
Compared to cabins I've stayed in before, these were bigger and more like small homes than I expected. Couches, tv, separate bedrooms, equipped kitchen, etc. The hosts were very accomodating when I needed help faxing.
Our first cabin, though further from the river, was more modern and clean. Our second cabin (when our group size changed) was older and less visually appealing. It's a trade-off to be weighed.

Can I Stay forever! These owner operated river side cabins are perfect. Such and Ideal location in the river as Moosehead Lake lake can get rough even in windy weather. The free use of kayaks, paddle boards and river tubes were most appreciated. My friends and I paddled from Gray Ghost Camps to the mouth of Moosehead Lake for sunrise. We got a complementary shuttle to the dam road so we could tube down the river back to camp. We also rented a pontoon boat from Captian Roger who is on site, which was very convenient. We explored the lake, went cliff jumping, and skipped rocks while having a picnic on the beach. We hiked Mount Kineo via the Indian trail to the fire tower. Amy and Steve were spot on in pointing us in the right direction for looking for moose, we saw 4. We had campfire s’mores and did some stargazing off the docks. Our weekend getaway into the Mountains of Maine was picture perfect. I can’t say enough about the laid back nature, hospitality and accommodating nature of the owners. Can’t wait to come back.

Beautiful place right at the river and close to the lake, lots of activities (we did stand up paddling, took a boat on the lake, did some hiking, went moose watching), terrific hosts. It was the highlight of our three weeks in New England.

As a family of four, we were really looking to enjoy our last breath of summer before school started. We spent two nights in the Supervisor cabin and had the most relaxing and fun couple of days. The hosts are so accommodating and even drove us up the river so that we could tube down, lazy river style. So many water toys are available such as paddle boards, kayaks, tubes and canoes. The grounds are clean and inviting and the cabin has a beautiful fire pit to hang around at night making s'mores and watching shooting stars. Can't say enough good things about this wonderful experience. We can't wait to go back!

Yes, all of the bedrooms have doors. Some of the one bedroom cabins have additional beds off the living area, such as cabins 3, 5, 6 and 13. They each offer a private bedroom but the additional sleeping quarters do not have doors. Our company website has more photos.
