Built in 1897, the Inn At St. John is one of the best Inns & Portland Maine hotels and is the city’s oldest continuously operated hotel. As a historic Victorian-era building, we offer an array of room styles, all of which are individually appointed and competitively priced. Whether you are searching for romantic luxury accommodation for a weekend getaway, a dog-friendly hotel room to accommodate the whole family, or even an economically priced room for an extended visit, the Inn At St. John is exactly what you are looking for. We are one of the few independently owned and operated hotels in the Portland area. As a result, you will find a complete dedication by our staff to ensure your stay is 100% satisfactory. A great deal of thought goes into every detail of the Inn from the decor to the complimentary breakfast. We think this approach sets us apart from our competitors and are confident you will agree. Conveniently situated in the west end of downtown Portland, the Inn at St. John is easily accessible to everything Portland has to offer. Don’t forget the numerous restaurants, shops, independent art galleries and nightclubs, all within a twenty-five-minute walk from the Inn’s front door. See our Attractions tab for distances from the Inn to popular area destinations.
I travelled to Maine as a solo female (24 yrs old) and this hotel was my first stop! I checked in after midnight due to my flight time and they were SO lovely and accommodating. They gave me extra blankets and a space heater for my room as it was really cold in Portland and the jet lag made me feel under the weather. The breakfasts were great; pastries, cereal, fruit, orange juice, bagels and hard boiled eggs. The staff were brilliant and let me check out a bit later and offered me to leave my luggage there for a short time during the morning if I needed. Location was great, an easy 15 min walk into the main Portland area with museums, restaurants etc. Would 100% recommend to anyone going to Portland.

I can't say enough about this Inn. It is perfect and has become the only place we stay in Portland. Our most recent trip was an overnight trip on New Year's Eve. Our stay didn't disappoint. We knew that check in would be promptly or later than 3pm. We traveled from New Hampshire and decided to stop into SLAB pizza for a drink and calzone to get our evening started. After that delicious and very pleasant experience, we checked into the inn. (We highly recommend SLAB!) Check-in was a breeze. We payed in full for our 1-night stay at the time of booking, so with a few quick questions, we had our parking pass and our room keys. The two attendants at the front desk were polite and welcoming. Thank you! We were able to park in the lot right at the inn. They also have overflow parking at a lot, but I have not had that experience before. The lot at the hotel is small, but adequate, and in 3 stays, we have not had to park elsewhere. We specifically booked "our room" online. We love room 1A. It is a large room with in-room bathroom/shower. The room has a large comfortable bed, sitting area with a table and 2 chairs, 2 bedside tables with access to power outlets, a bureau underneath a good sized television, a mini-fridge, microwave, ice bucket, coffee/tea set, a hanging coat rack/closet bar with hangers, and bathroom essentials if you choose not to bring your own. I particularly like sitting at the table and watching out the large 3-panel window as life happens by in downtown Portland. We have eaten dinner at that table in the past, shared drinks and conversation, and watched music concerts on our iPad at that table. It's a nice feature that we enjoy. I took a shower in the late afternoon. The water pressure is great. Water is nice and warm, and the bathroom overall was neat, tidy, and clean. We can tell that the room attendant pays attention to details. I'm very sorry I forgot her name. Do note that the hotel is adjacent to the hospital. While ambulances are noticeable during waking hours, I was never woken by any disturbance within or outside of the hotel. And, as noted, I never noticed any disruptive noise from guests within the hotel hallways or even the room next door. We were attending a concert event on NYE and choose to take a ride-share to the venue, given the light rain that was falling. After our event, we elected to walk home and had a walk that was about 15 minutes or so away from our venue. I felt safe and it was a pleasant end to our evening. Upon arrival, we entered the front door. Had we needed anything, the staff member at the desk was ready to assist. We made our way to our room and settled in for the evening. The bed is so comfy, it's easy to sink in and get to sleep. We were not disturbed at any point in our stay and checked out on time, at 11, with a quick turn-in of our room keys. The breakfasts is a nice continental spread with hot coffee and hot water. Admittedly, we rarely enjoy breakfasts becuase of our late night events. I would not hesitate to enjoy this breakfast if I were staying multiple days and wanted to get the day going right. We look forward to our next stay at the Inn at St. John. Thank you for another wonderful experience.…

A charming older place. It's not a Marriot, but that's what we wanted. It's an old building and, as they specify, there is no elevator. But the room was spacious, affordable, clean, and cared for with charm. The building has character and it feels unique. Everyone was friendly. The parking was easy and access to the airport couldn't be easier. We had a great stay and are glad we stayed somewhere unique!

It felt like we were visiting family! Rooms had a lot of small extras, I never forget a toothbrush but there were 2 waiting for us in the bathroom. Breakfast was just enough to get us going for a day in Portland. On the outskirts of downtown and Commercial ST but close enough.

The best thing about this hotel is the staff who were kind and helpful in so many ways. Over the phone they were courteous and patient and in person even better. I was impressed when they even helped me with someone asking for directions to a place I didn’t know. The room was large and so interesting. Well kept and clean. The breakfast is basic and seating limited but it was pleasant and well stocked. My only problem was the stairs and I was aware of it when I booked. Nice place to stay and close to where we needed to be.

My friend and I stayed here a few weeks ago and it was delightful. Small and charming, and right within walking distance of the hill in Portland without being overly expensive. It is nice to see when historic properties are able to be kept up.

Very nice and reasonably priced for a downtown location. Friendly and helpful staff with a welcome home like feel. Easy navigation to Downtown attractions and local parks. A great experiance to be had by the whole family. We recommend the extra expense for the private bathroom.

We were visting from NYC, where we are used to high hotel prices, but we were astonished by the prices in Portland last weekend--including at the Inn at St. John. The Inn is located across from Maine Medical Center--it's construction Zone, actually. It is a short run/walk to the Western Promenade, which is very beautiful and worth the climb. However, it is not really near any other real attractions of the city. Our room (double with private bath) was very small and dated (it is an historic inn, so I don't mind the antique furnishings...everything was just a little on the shabby side). However, it was very clean. Bath could use some updating as well. The "closet" had hardly any space to hang clothes. There was a table and chairs, and a chest of drawers, which was great. Continental breakfast was fine but average--hard-boiled eggs, cereal, store-bought muffins, etc. You're better off walking over to Holy Donuts and standing in line for their treats. All-day coffee/tea and snacks are a nice touch, however. Also, there was no maid service at all--no towel exchange or tidying up the room. Our check-in staff on Friday were extremely helpful and friendly; kudos to them for helping my husband up the stairs with his luggage. Other staff were also friendly, although we didn't have much interaction with them. We just expected a bit more of a homey atmosphere and a bit more comfort in our surroundings for the price. …

This hotel, although cute in pictures, is located right across the street from a medical center so you will hear all sorts of sirens at all hours. On top of that, hotel staff is at a minimum so there's a good chance your check-in won't be on time and anything you need from the hotel won't be taken care off on time if at all. The employees of this hotel also are unaware of the their own policies. When I reached out to Hotels.com about an issue with the hotel, the manager, "Terry", flat out lied about the circumstances. He is both rude, inflexible, and is a poor ambassador of this hotel. There are plenty of other hotels to stay at in the area that are nicer, cheaper, and in a better part of town. You can do better. PS - Terry threatened the call the cops if I posted this review. Said he had my contact information and everything. Oh well, Terry. That's a great way to treat customers.…

Don't be fooled! This person chose to resolve an issue by swearing, being rude, threatening, and belligerent on the phone. He booked the wring room style and blamed us for his mistake. Our historic European style Inn is very clean, well-appointed and has wonderful and pleasant staff that goes out of their way to help guests any way they can. Just because we work in the hospitality industry, it does not give permission for anyone to treat us poorly.

Helpful friendly, staff; huge room with all the amenities. Nicely decorated. You could stay in a hotel closer to Old Port for twice the price...or here and walk 20 mins or take $15 uber/taxi. It was a nice walk to the harbor. :)
