The Hampton Inn Portland Downtown - Waterfront is widely commended for its cleanliness, with numerous guests describing rooms as pristine. While the atmosphere is generally appreciated for its spaciousness, opinions on the decor range from charming to lackluster. The hotel's location is considered convenient for exploring the city, despite some misconceptions about its proximity to the waterfront. Friendly staff are often highlighted, though the mandatory valet parking fee has drawn criticism from guests who question its value. Overall, service and room cleanliness receive high marks, but some aspects of value and amenities leave room for improvement.

The pros: The location was perfect as my partner and I were able to easily walk to all of the spots in Portland we wanted to check out during our one day stay. Staff members were friendly. The breakfast was also lovely and had a good mixture of savory and sweet items (nothing fancy, but it definitely gets the job done). The cons: The noise from the hallway was easily heard during our entire stay - if anyone was in the hallway or rooms nearby, we heard them coming. The door almost sounded loose, as if it was being pushed open whenever a nearby door was opened. The beds weren’t horrible, but overall not the most comfortable. As for parking, only valet is available (for $35 a night) - the service was quick and professional but I would much rather be able to park my own car (ideally for free if I’m paying to stay at a hotel with a parking lot). These are little things I wouldn’t normally be bothered by, but at nearly $200 a night it should be better.

Hotel's Favorite
This is a very nice family (and pet) friendly hotel in a great location. Rooms and common areas were very clean, gym was nice, pool was bigger than expected though slightly chilly, and the staff was friendly, helpful and responsive. Old Port and its restaurants and shops are a very short walk away. Would definitely look to book here for our next Portland visit!

Room Tip: Parking lot across street is $20/day, get car out by midnight. Hotel was $35 but I'm guessing...

The stay was nice overall, a few things could need improvement. The pool looked pretty dirty with large clumps of hair all throughout, needs a good clean. The beds were harder than we would prefer, and they really need more than one waffle maker in the breakfast area because the line gets really long.

I’ll start with the pros: very friendly staff when I arrived, awesome location; a block in from Commercial Street so the waterfront, ferries, Polar Express train, amazing restaurants and shopping are super close. Seriously some of the best restaurants in town are a stones’ throw away. Portland Museum of Art, Merrill Auditorium, music venues, Nickelodeon, Cross Arena — all walkable. Children’s museum is a quick drive and they have great parking (and Bissel Brothers close by!) so easy peasy. When I checked in at ten last night the pool was still filled with happy kids. Free breaky: basic fruit, yogurt, a waffle maker, a few warm items and baked goods. There is an awesome brunch restaurant (Friendly Toast) with an entrance in the lobby as well (there is usually a wait for tables so put your name in and go have a coffee in the lobby!) and Standard Bakery, the Holy Donut and amazing coffee places are a short walk away. Parking is valet and expensive, but it is hard to find street parking and they ticket aggressively sooooo. My room is fine. It’s a newish hotel so I was a little surprised that it feels kind of dated but it’s functional, with a microwave and mini fridge. Perfect place to bring the kids for a fun staycation, or to eat your way through Portland (truly you could stay a week and walk to different incredible restaurants for three meals a day) or catch a show and dinner. If you’re looking for a kind of luxe place where you would want to spend a lot of time in the room this isn’t it. Now the cons and the reason I am giving it 3 stars. As many of us do I always check the corners of the bed for bedbugs at all hotels, no matter where or how fancy. When I peeled back the sheet there weren’t any bugs but the mattress pad was dirty - looks someone spilled their drink sitting in bed. Just ew. The sheet was clean but seeing that made me question general cleanliness honestly. I guess I assume ALL the bedding (especially when it is obviously dirty and stained!) is changed between guests. Also the remote for the tv didn’t work. Sigh. It was late and I was tired so I decided not to raise a ruckus but these two things really impacted my overall impression and experience.

Parking: Mandatory valet, which would be fine if it was efficient. The cars are parked outside, yet, I have to pay someone to park and retrieve my car. Iced windshield, didn’t leave the wipers up & very slow. If it’s a staffing issue, then give other options. Yes, street parking “if you can find a spot” after 6pm and before 9am. A total mess. Check In: No room key, luckily we had the digital key. The person at the front desk said there were no rooms available for early check in. She didn’t check, didn’t give us a time to return except “check in is at 4” not at all the “normal experience” When we asked about local spots she didn’t know the location of anything nor had recommendations. She also did not offer the gold/diamond member snacks upon check in. (No big deal, but very out of the ordinary for a Hilton property) When we did need a room key (to get into the gym) because the digital key didn’t work we returned to the front desk. This time there were 3 people in line waiting to check in. The staff member was very friendly, which was appreciated. Unfortunately she spent an excessive amount of time 10+ minutes chatting it up with the guest, who appeared to be a regular at this hotel. Meanwhile the gentleman behind her waited simply wanting to check into his room. Finally, another staff member (that had been in the back office) came to the desk and made us a key. Totally inefficient. Time and place. The Room: Very clean, plenty of linen, and it was quiet. The furnace stayed on all night which was nice because it always wakes my partner up when it clicks on and off at other properties. Plenty of hot water, the view of the ocean was beautiful. Staff: Very friendly, but very inefficient. Breakfast: pretty standard, not great… but not terrible. Easy grab and go. The scones were decent.

Hotel had a very convenient location to walking, restaurants, stop in eateries and stores and it was clean and a nice one night stay. Parking was valet and an extra cost as expected in a city. Breakfast was also as expected. We would stay here again.

Planned time away with my significant other. However come to find out whomever stayed in our room prior to us staying there must have been bleeding at some point. The sheets were not changed and come to find out we slept in a bed with bloody sheets since the room was not properly cleaned. I spoke with management during my stay and was told my stay would be comped due to the unfortunate condition and situation we were put in. Called many times just to get a run around. I would not stay here. As a Heath care professional myself you don’t know what communicable diseases people may have.
