Really amazing hotel. No elevator, but the young man who checked us in had our bags up to the third floor before I had gotten my purse out of the car. Fairly close to restaurants. Off street parking, nice bar. The best breakfast of the trip!

We stayed a nite in the Port room which was spacious with a private bath and king size bed. Breakfast is customized to acknowledge food allergies and the menu is personalized. Lobster fried rice was topped with an egg and was delicious! Service was attentive and not overbearing. Definitely would consider a revisit next time in Portland.

The old structure and facade you see from the street, belies the modern ambience within. The rooms are comfortable, roomy, and very tasteful, the service is impeccable, and the food will surprise even the most calloused foodie. Breakfast was fantastic with Eggs Benedict with a sweet chili hollandaise and a (not so) traditional Congee that simply titillated the palate. Plan... More

We just got back from a 4 night stay at The Danforth. It is a lovely old property that has been reinterpreted with modern design elements. The result is a wonderful combination of modern and old world charm. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The food was excellent including wonderful leisurely breakfasts each morning. I can't say that I... More

Having stayed at The Danforth several years ago, we were looking forward to spending a special evening there recently. Guess the adage, "You can't go back" applies here. The former owner of The Danforth, Barbara Hathaway, endeavored tirelessly to restore the property to its former dignity and to encourage guests to step back in time and to experience the gentility... My friend and I stayed at the Danforth for a mom's night getaway and we were both extremely impressed with our stay. The inn itself is a gorgeous historic house from the 1800's, nestled in a residential area, just a short 10-15 minute walk from the Old Port. The interior decor is a quirky mix of antique and modern art... More

The room was perfect. Breakfast was a uniquely bad experience! All wrapped in elegance while each item served separately with 10 minutes gap between coffee and milk. When making the reservation we were asked of any food allergies or sensitivity and asked for Gluten free bread which was promised and confirmed upon arrival but failed to be present on the... More

Dear Efrat-Beredjik, Thank you for your review. We are always sorry to hear when guests didn't enjoy their experience. We have a somewhat different recollection how events occurred. According to our information we were only informed upon check-in about your gluten free dietary restrictions and this was communicated with our chef. There was as far as our innkeepers remember not... More

The Danforth is a zen-like oasis just a 10 minute walk from the center of the city, and 15 minute walk from the heart of the tourist district. The overall decor (great original artwork!), room accommodations and cuisine were all outstanding. The entire staff was incredibly friendly and attentive. We enjoyed being a bit removed from the hustle and bustle... More

We arranged a last minute getaway and had plans for night #1 but not night #2. We had a lovely stay at the Mt. Washington Inn and were perplexed about what could possibly be a good follow-up to such a lovely experience. We decided to head towards Portland. Thanks to some happy circumstances, we stumbled across the Danforth Inn, which... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The Danforth is the grande dame of the Portland, Maine boutique hotel scene. Built in the 1800's, extensive renovations to design and (mostly) new bathrooms have married historic gentility with classic but contemporary stylings. Basement billiard room, a widow's walk with views, three course breakfasts - who could ask for more? A recent review called The Danforth an historic mansion with a hip vibe. ... more   less
