Amazing place!! Historic lodge (1891) for the Civil War 8th Regiment that's been converted into housing for vacationers. Certianly this place isn't for everybody, especially for folks seeking total privacy. However, the rooms are gorgeous, lots of attention to detail, and room 9 has all-around ocean views. My partner and I came here for the ocean views, kayaking and serenity,... More

Our room was perfect! We woke up to an amazing view out over the ocean, and fell asleep to the sound of the waves! I loved that we had not only our own refrigerator and cabinets, but access to a whole kitchen of dishes and silverware and anything you could ever need! I slept great for two nights away from... I just got back home to PA. I stayed at the 8th Maine while on Peaks Island. The place was wonderful. From the minute I walked in I was greeted by Dawn and her husband Bill, and was treated very nicely. Check in was a breeze. My room was downstairs. But, I walked through the main floor room, and saw... More

Great room, Spectacular views. A true gem of a place. Great for families, couples or solo travelers. Be prepared to bring your own food and be willing to cook. A communal experience like vacations used to me in the last century. A nice change to all of the dining out we all do nowadays.

The 8th Maine is a delightful and affordable place to stay on a fantastically beautiful island of Portland, Maine. What it lacks in luxury, it more than makes up for in charm, historical significance and authenticity, spectacular views of Casco Bay and friendly hosts. The communal kitchen and dining area helped us save a little money and also encouraged us... More

I liked the outdoor shower the most! All the old pictures of civil war soldiers are really interesting. It's a throwback to an era long gone. Shared bathrooms: you gotta be cool with that! Amazing views from porches on the first and second level. Friendly, helpful staff. Thank you!

Affordable & comfortable room at 8th Maine. Owner was friendly. I didn't use the kitchen & dining area but it was spacious & families with small children were cooking breakfast that morning. My room had a view of the ocean & with the window open you could listen to the waves all night!

There are many unique and quirky things about the 8th Maine - we had a great time staying there. If you are looking for a cookie-cutter hotel, this is not the spot for you. If you like old world campy charm - you will love it. We stayed in Room 2 and also had room 9. The bathroom was right... More

The 8th Maine is a great place to stay. Location! It is on the water facing the ocean, if you get a single room on the kitchen level, you will hear the great ocean sounds all night. The wrap around porch is amazing with spectacular views. The main floor is a shared space with games and a fireplace for folks... More

I just returned from a three night stay at The 8th Maine. I would definitely go back! I was a little hesitant going in because of the lodge's communal living concept, which usually doesn't appeal to me. The photos of the public spaces gave me the impression that this place might have a frat house feel. When I walked through... More
