Frommer's Travel Guide said, "It's hard to convey the magnificence of the ocean views, maybe the best of any Inn's in Maine." The open sea, rocky cliffs and thick forest create an enchanting setting for the historic Newagen Seaside Inn, poised on the tip of Southport Island in the heart of Maine's famed Boothbay Harbor region. Make some memories at the newly restored, yet always historic, Newagen Seaside Inn, at the edge of the sea.

For those seeking a traditional retreat but with comfort and genuine hospitality, the Newagen offers a great option. Tucked away 7 miles out on the Atlantic and away from the crowds at nearby Boothbay Harbor, the grounds have been beautifully maintained and the hotel tastefully refurbished since our last visit a decade ago. We recommend a sunny afternoon by the saltwater pool, a scenic walk along the ocean shore, followed by an excellent dinner at the inn's restaurant.

The Newagen Seaside Inn is a special place that far exceeded our expectations. It's not that we had low expectations because the reviews were quite good but you can't always rely on reviews because the reviewers may have lower or different standards than you have. We also chose Newagen for its proximity to the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens which was our primary reason for visiting Boothbay this time. Little did I know that I decide this Inn would become a destination in and of itself.

The inn is located on Southport Island on a very large and private piece of land at the end of a winding, hilly road surrounded by the ocean. We were immediately struck by how well maintained the lawn and shrubs were and by the beautiful flowers seen everywhere on the property. The receptionists at the check-in desk were very welcoming and helpful. Tip: check-in online and it's true that you'll be handed your keys as soon as you introduce yourself with no paperwork to sign or id's or credit cards to show.

We loved our room. It was attractive, very clean and the furnishings, although not distinctive, were in like new condition and good quality. There was a lot of attention to detail shown in the attractive pictures on the wall, the toiletries in the bathroom, the manner in which the towel selection was folded and arranged. The shower was very nice as well. The room we chose, the Classic King, had a king size bed, a decent sized closet loaded with wooden hangers and a good sized bureau with a mini-fridge inside containing two bottles of water. Before you check out, don't forget to take the nice canvas shopping bag gift the proprietors provide you.

As I indicated, the grounds are expansive and so well maintained which is so evident walking down to the beautiful, sparkling clean swimming pool with a covered cart full of nice beach towels. The lounge chairs at the pool and regular sitting chairs strewn about the many nicely designed decks and in the attractive gazebo overlooking the ocean are more evidence of the pride of ownership evident everywhere! Nearby is an outdoor game area and there is a very nice pickleball court we saw driving in to this mini resort. We never saw the indoor game room or took advantage of the available row boats.

The breakfast room was large and beautiful with a wall of glass on one side. The buffet breakfast was delicious with a broad selection of items to choose from. It was also well staffed with service folks quickly picking up empty plates and cleaning tables. We also had a nice dinner at the attractive Pub at the inn but that should be a separate review.

We could have spent several days here. As I said, it is a destination itself and it is very reasonably priced. Everywhere we looked, it was so obvious how well managed this place was. BTW, I am known as a very critical person who can and do find fault with nearly everything I encounter. I could find nothing to criticize at the outstanding Newagen Seaside Inn! Come on down!

We just got home from the most relaxing weekend at this beautiful Inn and everything was perfect. We stayed in the very clean and comfortable Kennebec room on the first floor which has direct access to and overlooks this gorgeous ocean-view property. We spent a lot of time sitting in the comfy chairs on our deck and taking in the beautiful scenery and even a wedding! The views are incredible and we loved walking to the dock to take pictures and watch the sunsets. There are plenty of benches and Adirondack chairs around the property to sit and relax and there's also a great outdoor area for games (which are all provided) like corn hole, jumbo chess, shuffle board and Connect Four, a nice size outside pool area, two fire pits (maybe even three) and a huge lawn. I slept better the last two nights in the comfy king-size bed than I have in a while and I was so happy being there that even the noise from the heavy footed guests staying above us didn't bother me! The water pressure in the shower was amazing and it was nice to have a mini fridge in our room for drinks. Also, if you stay here, eat at their Pub as many times as you can because the food and service is outstanding. We ate there both nights and I would go back again tonight if I could. It was truly some of the most delicious food I've ever had and the tables were spread very comfortably apart which made it a very relaxing experience. The first night we started with the mussels that came in one of the best cream sauces I have ever had. It was so flavorful I was tempted to order a side of plain pasta to pour it over. It was THAT good. My husband had the scallops and butternut squash risotto. The scallops were sweet and perfectly cooked and the risotto was amazing. I had a beet salad with goat cheese which was lightly battered and I believe pan fried. The lettuce was so fresh and the cheese was creamy and delicious. I also had the crab cakes which were some of the best I have ever had and a little spicy which I like! Last night we started with the calamari which was also spicy, fresh and flavorful. My husband had the pork chop and loved it and I ordered the haddock which was light and buttery and truly delicious. We finished with the flourless chocolate tort which was rich and completely unnecessary after all we ate but also so damn good! The portions were generous and everything had so much flavor! Tian was our waiter and we liked him so much we requested him the second night. He's a hard worker with a wonderful personality and a great sense of humor. My only regret is that we weren't able to try a real breakfast as they were only serving boxed breakfasts due to Covid which is completely understandable. The staff was really attentive and caring and we were sad to check out today.

If you are looking to escape to somewhere truly special for a relaxing and peaceful weekend on the water, I highly recommend The Newagen Seaside Inn.

My husband and I just returned home after a 3 day stay at Newagan Resort. We were lucky to get a great price as a result of their Pay What You Can offer for Maine residents during the month of June. We stayed in the Little Inn with a large and well appointed room complete with a comfortable king bed, amazing shower, microwave, fridge, coffee maker, take away continental breakfast, and deck with super comfy cushioned chairs and amazing ocean view! We brought our own bikes to explore the island but the resort provides bikes to borrow. We loved walking the beautiful grounds and sitting in numerous areas to enjoy the oceanfront views. At cocktail time, we enjoyed sitting outside on comfy sofas sipping on drinks and enjoying a delicious appetizer. One day we had mussels which were amazing. Another day the calamari which was the best preparation we have experienced. We also loved the crab cakes. The outdoor deck also has a fire pit that others enjoyed but we loved our excellent service right on the lawns.

For dinner, we were not ready to dine inside so we ordered take out each night and found every meal amazing. The potions were large so we shared one entree each evening. We brought our own plates, wine and wine glasses so we could thoroughly enjoy the dining experience on our deck. We had the shrimp fettuccine, ravioli, and halibut and each was expertly prepared and absolutely delicious!

Many guests enjoyed the pool area but we didn’t use that area.
The Newagon staff was great and the stay felt very safe in terms of mitigation efforts for the virus. Everyone has to wear a face covering when in common indoor areas.

Highly recommend this great resort!!

When you look at reviews I will be the outlier but do not brush this off if you want a stay someplace that is quiet or private. We booked our room online. On the positive side, the room was pretty, facilities are lovely and the front desk and pub staff are wonderful. When we were settling in for the evening it became obvious that there was absolutely no sound proofing between our room and the next room. The light from the room shone under the door through a large gap and the conversation was as loud as if it were in our room. That is when I also noticed there was toilet paper stuffed in a hole in the door where the lock used to be. The front desk offered us a different room (more modern) but that was also an adjoining room and we made the choice to leave. We were charged in full for the room and when I spoke to the manager Abby all she cared about was that the room was used and not able to be rented that evening. I understand her point but she had absolutely no apology for the conditions of the room. She said she tells everyone she speaks with when they make a reservation that the majority of the rooms are adjoining and that they can supply fans to create white noise to cover the noise from the adjoining room. There is no reference to this on the website so Buyer Beware. They know the rooms are noisy, they know they are adjoining but you will only learn this if you call the Inn directly. If we had known we would not have stayed here. Abby was absolutely immoveable and would not even provide the courtesy of a half room rate refund. She went on to explain that after the season she had she was not in the mindset to provide a refund. And, she also said she was going to check on the toilet paper in the door hole as "that is not the way we do things here" but clearly it is. The long drive home was a very upsetting ending to an otherwise lovely day. It is a lovely old Inn and if you don't mind hearing the people in the next room, shower, snore, etc and don't mind light pouring in from their room into yours this is your place.

We're so disappointed that the room did not meet your expectations. Both our General Manager and our front desk person reported that the main reason you gave for being dissatisfied with an adjoining room was your fear that COVID would enter your room underneath the door. While that is highly unlikely, you are correct that our historic Main Inn is not as well insulated as the more modern rooms in the Little Inn. This is why we offered you a complimentary upgrade into that building, which you turned down. Because you had already showered in your room and we had no housekeepers available after 8pm, we were not able to make the room available to another traveler and you were charged, as is standard policy at any hotel. Honestly, we would have been willing to meet you in the middle had you not been verbally abusive, condescending and insulting to our General Manager who remained polite and professional throughout your conversation. We have chosen a career in the hospitality business because we thrive on saying "yes" to our guests whenever we can, but in a season that has been characterized by unrelenting demand and an unprecedented labor shortage, we simply will not accept that sort of treatment.

This inn is beautifully situated with manicured grounds overlooking the coast. The amenities are varied with something for everyone. Our interaction with the staff from check-in, to housekeeping, to dining room servers etc. was uniformly helpful and cordial. We were assigned room 129, a second floor accommodation featuring a king bed and a scenic view through our window. There is no TV so bring a book. Though daily room service was not available due to covid-19, we requested and received towels on our second day. Daily breakfast is offered, but did not vary from day to day so by our third and last morning we were ready for a change. The public areas were well maintained. We had dinner at the Pub on our last night that proved to be quite enjoyable.

We thoroughly enjoyed our short stay at this amazing location on the tip of a Maine coastal island. The staff was extremely kind and welcoming and the room was spotless clean. The room on the lower level of the primary building had a nice outdoor patio with a seating area. The furniture was very well selected matching the room design. The location, about ten minutes away from the bustle of downtown Boothbay Harbor, was perfectly placed at the tip of Southport Island with water on three sides. We will return if in the area again. Also, even though we mistakenly paid via hotwire for the wrong night, Newagen staff simply told us to come on the correct night for no additional change or adjustment fee.

We arrived well before official check-in, but there was a room available so we started carrying our luggage up to the second floor. After entering we disappointed by the small size of the room (#101) and returned to the front desk. The friendly/informative individual at the front desk kindly reassigned us to room 103, a much larger accommodation, though it took an hours wait before it became suitable for occupancy. Daily room service is again available and it proved to be very punctual.

This is an older facility so don't expect the doors to close or lock gracefully, there are not enough outlets for all your electronic devices and there's not a TV in sight. What will cause you to return year after year as it has us is a glorious setting that seems ever changing as the tide rolls in and out, the day passes from sunrise to sunset, and ever changing weather conditions. The grounds are beautifully maintained and the staff members proved to be very accommodating.

The included breakfast was pretty good though there was little variety from morning to morning and a few items went missing over the course of our stay that never returned (e.g. yogurt, jam).

We dined at The Pub on our last evening and though there was a wedding reception making demands on the kitchen, we were happy with both the food and service.

The place itself is very quaint, quiet and quite satisfactory. The exception was that I was slightly injured when I got into a hammock on the property which had a cracked beam on one side. As I result I fell about 10 inches right to the hard ground.
I reported it to the manager and she was very nice, but offered no other compensation, such as dinner or reimbursement for the inconvenience. I was given a bag of ice and asked if I needed an ibuprofen. I would caution other visitors to perhaps check equipment before using. It would have been nice to be given a discount or credit toward a future trip for the inconvenience of being injured at the property during one's vacation.

We were so distressed to hear that you fell from the hammock while on property! As you know, the frame was broken by another guest right before you got in it and management had no idea it had happened. We immediately removed the hammock to prevent any future mishaps, and hoped that the apology and first aid would have made any kind of financial award unnecessary.

A high class resort should be at its best from the first to the last day of the season. Some things are unforgivable at a high end Maine resort. An included breakfast without milk or cream for coffee, only cheerios as a cold cereal, few other options on the breakfast buffet does not say great resort. And the coup de gras is the dining room having no lobster or scallops at dinner when hundreds of lobsters are harvested down the street less than 4 miles away. Having a Restsurant lose dinner reservations happens but it shouldn’t. I suspect the owner’s absence led to these overlooked details. Fantastic property and views but be cautious.

Cancelation fees are extremely common, especially at smaller, independent inns and B&Bs. They help cover credit card fees incurred in issuing the deposit refund, time spent processing the cancelation, and lost revenue opportunity. Our policy is clearly stated on the "check availability" section of our website and on our confirmation letter. If you tell me how you booked your reservation, I can direct you to where the policy is detailed. Please feel free to email me at clarson@newageninn
