Cudos to the amazing staff of this impeccably maintained Inn which sits right on the bay boasting breathtaking water views. The friendly staff quietly attended to every detail -including health related details- making our stay relaxed and peaceful. We felt very safe as staff and guests wore masks in common areas and breakfast tables were adequately spaced. Chef Brad is a culinary genius. All the food, including the homemade snack items individually wrapped and left out in the afternoon, were absolutely delicious. We will be back ASAP!

This place is a jewel box. From the moment we drove down the shaded gravel drive we felt more relaxed than we had in a long time. There are 12 rooms and cottages opening onto beautifully tended gardens and lawns. The lawn behind the main house is right on the water, but it is a quiet inlet, so there are no loud motor boats, only the occasional lobster or sailboat. There are a few Adirondack chairs on the lawn where we sat with a glass of wine in the afternoon.
Although the inn was almost full every night of our stay, there was no noise or chatter to disrupt the peace. Our room, the Theater Loft, had no water view, but we loved it. The large bedroom windows look out on the woods and the dappled light on the trees in the breeze was so lovely. The innkeepers and housekeeping staff leave no stone unturned. There are pottery vases in the bathroom and bedroom filled with flowers from their garden; chocolates are left on the pillows in the evening; hardback books with scenes of the Maine coast are placed on the tables; and bottles of water and soft drinks in the mini-fridge are replaced daily. The king bed was comfortable with throws folded at the end of the bed.
MJ and Matt, the owners and innkeeper, couldn't have been nicer. They were quick to offer to make boat reservations for us, recommend scenic drives, and tell us the pros and cons of different destinations. Every morning they make a fabulous breakfast beginning with freshly baked scones and muffins, juice, and coffee, followed by a fruit plate with local berries and melons garnished with edible flowers. There are three main entrees--a large bowl of yogurt, granola, and berries; a salmon, bagel, cream cheese, onion, hardboiled egg, and caper platter; and a special of the day which included on our visit omelettes, french toast, strata, and avocado toast with a choice of egg. You will not go hungry.
The owners have collected beautiful paintings which decorate the main rooms as well as the guest rooms. In the main house there is a wood paneled library and honor bar with a fireplace, a bright dining room, and a solarium sun room with soothing fabrics. There is an outside porch overlooking the ocean with three tables. We were lucky enough to sit there every morning for breakfast.
It was truly hard to leave this stunning property. Many of the guests we met told us that they had stayed there multiple times, and we can see why. We will be back too.

We have stayed at the Inn at Sunrise Point for our anniversary each September since 2003 and have written very favorable reviews in those years. We spend over a week because the property is private and also right on Penobscot Bay with incredible views. For 20 years, we made the trip to the Inn for it's peacefulness and excellent service, but also the flexibility when we needed to include work items during our week+ stays.
This year, with new ownership, we became a burden for having work needs (wifi, internet, cell service) that any other location where we stay; luxury, Relais & Chateau, Select Registry or otherwise, understand. During our 10-day stay, the wifi and cell service was very poor and we had to move about the property to make phone calls. Management blamed the prior owners. We offered some cost-effective solutions that would help the Inn create a stronger and safer internet space, but were told that they could not guarantee that they would make that happen... even for our trip next year, that was already on their calendar.
We made our own reservations to local restaurants because we were told by the Inn that certain restaurants didn't have openings. In past visits, the Inn had a strong Camden/and area reputation and made these reservations for us ahead of time.
Unfortunately, we didn't bring a decanter with us. We opened a rare bottle of wine and decanted it in one of the Inn's decanters. The service staff wasn't made aware and our wine was thrown out during room cleaning the next morning. The bottle couldn't be replaced. Instead of simply taking the cost from the bill, the Inn tried to replace it but in this case, it really was not the thought that counted because it was an irreplaceable bottle.
When we sent our note asking if the Inn would consider making the connectivity better, they just said that they would provide no assurances. They also offered that if we didn't want to return, we should make sure to read their cancellation policy.
After 20 years we will not return in 2024. Very sad to us but we also saw in the pricing for 2024, that our room would increase approx $200, so the trade isn't a bad one.

Response from MJ and Matt Ruffing, Owner at Inn at Sunrise Point
Responded Nov 4, 2023
Hello Steve, First of all, may we say, "Thank you" for noting the excellent location and views. In our three years of owning and running The Inn at Sunrise Point, this was our first meeting. We feel compelled to state unequivocally no guest of The Inn is ever a burden; we made a commitment when we chose to enter this field that each and every guest is a gift for which we are most grateful, and we strive to express that in our daily actions. The quality of our guests' experience is tantamount to everything we do and our actions are done with thought, intent and choices made by us. We sent you an email six weeks prior to your arrival stressing the importance of securing dinner reservations well in advance and offering assistance; in addition, Mary reached out to you personally numerous times inquiring if she could assist you, which she did. Our relationships with our community partners are exceptional because we do not pressure them to compromise their service and quality standards by "fitting in" our guests. Instead, we follow very specific protocols and choose to be proactive in reaching out to our guests offering assistance with reservations in advance so that they can in fact dine at their restaurants of choice. You had all these advantages; the fact you chose to cancel reservations we made for you at the times and venues of your choice was more indicative of your lack of planning than it was our willingness to assist. Regarding the "irreplaceable" bottle of port: The service staff was not made aware of the contents in the carafe because we were not made aware of your intent with the carafe. You merely asked us for a decanter which we did not have and instead we gave you the carafe. In the future may we recommend you notify management and/or leave a note for housekeeping regarding the contents of the container. Especially given the placement of the carafe among the dirty glassware and bottles. May we also state that when we offered a good will gesture of replacing the port you indicated it had to be "vintage", which we of course purchased for you. You can imagine how surprised we were by your review condemning this effort. Had you wanted a different solution we must wonder why you did not communicate that to us? Regarding your problems with the internet service, this is the first we have heard of issues regarding our internet. Many of our guests engage in a working holiday and we have never until you, been called out for a lack of quality internet service. As for your allegations of blaming previous ownership, that is patently ludicrous. You had posed the question of whether we had changed the internet service and we replied that we had not. That was the sum total of our verbal exchange on this matter. In terms of the "note" you claim to have sent, it was not that; rather, it was a letter with bullet points listing "assurances" we would have to meet in order to keep your 2024 reservation. We are unwilling to give assurances that we have no idea if we can deliver on and jeopardize your holiday or our reputation. We wish you the best in your future travels.

My husband and I just spent a glorious week at the Inn at Sunrise Point where our room was perfectly appointed, the setting and the view were magnificent, the breakfasts were worth every last calorie and the welcome was like that of old and dear friends. We had booked the room after visiting early last Fall; so, we were expecting a special experience, but that booking was made way before the pandemic struck In this time when everyone is worried and mistrusting, we felt protected and looked after with every precaution possible being taken by the staff whom we knew by name and who knew us by our second day. I actually wanted to hug everyone when I left, but of course I didn’t.
If in addition to bring a lover of Maine, lobster, the ocean, pine forests, etc., you also love gardens, this is your place. A series of perennial gardens with hydrangeas, phlox, and many others plantings act like colorful carpets laid to pull together buildings and landscape. We’ve already booked for next year.

This was our ninth year at the Inn at Sunrise Point. As you might imagine we had the same concerns about Covid sanitizing shared by other travelers. Our concerns were quickly put to rest by the protocols Daina (owner) has put in place. Everything was spotless as always and every conceivable precaution had been taken to sanitize all surfaces, provide hand sanitizer and masks in our room along with each entrance to the Inn. The furniture throughout was positioned for social distancing, and even the
afternoon snacks were individually packaged to eliminate the community serving areas.
And as usual, Daina and staff provided VIP service and comfort from check-in to checkout.

+1
We have stayed for 3-5 nights the past two years. All the rooms are nice with updated bathrooms, locally made Swans Island wool throws, fresh cut flowers, turn down service. Most of the rooms and cabins have water views. The third that do not face the water instead overlook a nice flower garden cared for by a professional gardener. Breakfast is large and fully gourmet. Honor bar. Matt, MJ, and Mary are excellent hosts. The location is adjacent to Camden and a short drive to Rockland (Farneworth Museum, Harbor Square Gallery); a longer day trip to Acadia NP. Too many good restaurants to list.

"Stay small, stay safe", is not just a phrase but a reality. Sunrise Point is immaculate and offers a relaxing escape into a spectacular setting. The views are just beautiful
from the porch or window or one's private deck. The food is amazing; a three course gourmet breakfast has one jumping out of bed ready to meet the day with delight. Brad, the chef, is always creating something new and healthy. Dinner is now offered right at the inn for those days when going out seems a chore. The fireplace in the room and downstairs off the dining area, offers warmth, comfort and conversation during the day. Once there and after one stay, one longs to return again and again.

Well, I'm not sure where to start to describe a most exceptional time at this treasure. The team (Mary, Alisa, Hannah, Mimi) thought of everything when it came to the safety of their staff and guests during these uncertain times. We stayed in the Edward Hopper cottage which was tucked away just a bit but still had beautiful views of the ocean with privacy. The cottage was spotlessly clean, thoughtfully decorated and well appointed.
The breakfasts each morning were divine! There was a special each morning that never disappointed and you could also order ff the menu. There was space for indoor and outdoor seating which we even enjoyed on the rainy morning The afternoon tea and snacks were so fresh and dangerously easy to indulge in thanks to chef Brad.
The housekeeping staff worked so hard to keep everything impeccably clean. Your hard work was so noticed!
We dipped our toes in the water each day, watched the seals swim by with the schools of mackerel and the birds were leading the pack including an eagle.
We've traveled all over the world and had some wonderful experiences but had no idea this gem was so close to home. Thank you to all of you for a perfect week.

The inn is located on a beach not far from Camden / Rockport / Rockland. Our bathroom and room were quite large and even had a little coffee bar. There was a lovely sunroom as well as a porch and lawn chairs overlooking the water.
The breakfast was excellent - juices, pastries, and fruit to start, then a main entree which changed each day, and was so large we really should have shared it. There was always the choice of yogurt parfait and another item. The yogurt parfait someone else ordered was huge! There were individually bagged treats every afternoon, and an honor system self-service bar in the den. The only thing that was missing was an electric kettle for the tea and I'm hoping they will get one.
There was turn-down service at night, and while we were at breakfast our bed was made and our bathroom tidied.
We would go back in a hearbeat!
