I first visited Sewall House after my mother's passing and I was seeking quiet, nurturing and healing. Donna and her staff could sense that and they were warm, welcoming and provided exactly what I needed. I have returned annually since then.

The quality of service is five-stars through and through. They cater to each clients' needs with attention to yoga styles and levels, dietary needs and activities. The yogic lifestyle is encouraged but not enforced.

The location and environment is luxuriously relaxing and remote, embedded in a small town and surrounded by nature (cell reception is not great so plan for a digital detox if you're not on a Verizon plan). The air is fresh and the skies are as clear and blue as in the Caribbean. And Donna will introduce you to the best secret nature spots that seem like little pockets of heaven.

The meals are all vegetarian, fresh, mostly organic (if not all), delicious and very plentiful. I am not a vegetarian and yet I always felt more than satisfied after meals. Note: The homemade breads, jams, granola, and yogi tea are must tries!

If you're seeking peace in a relaxing, unpretentious and down to earth environment, don't hesitate. This is your spot!

Sewall House is a place for those who want a smaller retreat, One feels comfortable doing as little as much as they choose. Donna and her staff offer yoga, healing modalities, hiking and comfort in a happy inviting environment. You can have as much or as little participation as you want. The food is amazing, the 2 (different types of yoga) are taught by knowledgeable and skilled people) and nature abounds. One of my favorite things was porch sitting! This is a place where one can feel comfortable going solo or with a friend or partner, or a small group. It's unique, not corporate.

Thank you so much for this review and yes, we are a mom and pop ancestral 1865 National Historic Registry home where TR healed from asthma in his youth. We started this venture in 1997 long before all the larger corporate type retreats came onto the scene (and didn't discover trip advisor until 2009!)..we care about each individual and give as much of a personalized experience as well can..because we think every individual is unique and has their own needs, whether it be yoga level, private rooms for each guest, choice of activities offered or the healing aspects of nature and healthy food we offer as well...oh yes, and porch sitting!!

I'm a 25 yr old man from Boston, and with the ongoing COVID pandemic I decided to come to the Sewall House for a week alone to decompress and learn Kundalini Yoga. Maine has few cases, and with the small size of the retreat I felt safe to participate.

At the time of my trip, I was the only guest there! Ajeet, Lindsay, and Donna accommodated to me personally - structuring the classes to what I was interested in or moving the time if my outdoor activity was running late.

Furthering my Yoga was my main intention for the trip, and I was very happy with the quality of instruction. I had never practiced Kundalini, but the practice was easy to follow along (not so easy to perform at first) and Donna is always happy to answer any questions. The effects of the yoga brought me a lot of invigoration and energy, strength to my spine, and opened my hips more than ever before. I mostly practice Hatha and this felt like a great complement for times I feel to re-ignite my inner fire or feel more movement in my life.

The food was excellent, the ingredients were fresh, the meals were delicious, well balanced, and timed that I was never hungry and always looking forward to our next meal. I also took a few cooking classes and learned to make tempe and sushi.

Outside of yoga I spent the days hiking or kayaking, the surrounding area is beautiful and peaceful. There is such a lightness and friendliness to Maine that just spending time felt healing. The week felt like it passed in a second.

Overall coming to Sewall I found deep healing, a loving community, and spiritual growth in a setting of ease and joy. Thank you to the teachers for their hard work and dedication to making it an unforgettable experience!

Your review means so very much to all of us..we are grateful and touched that you took the time to write this fabulous review of your time with us and appreciating the yoga and the beauty of northern Maine, both we feel are parts of the healing this area and historic home retreat (where TR healed from asthma as a young Harvard student - the tradition goes way bak!) We do our best to make each and every guest's time personalized and fit to their yoga needs, whether hatha, kundalini or the more popular vinyasa/ashtanga and iyengar/dharma influenced morning practice or the afternoon Kundalini or restorative/yin type classes. We wish you luck on your journey and so glad you found us!!!!! Whether one or three/4 guests we are taking all precautions during this unprecedented covid 19 time. Glad we can still be here to serve others.

Sewall House was a wonderful experience for me! This historical home is rich with character and filled with authentic antiques and other interesting items. My room was cozy, clean and comfortable. I am a novice at yoga and loved the small class environment. Donna is relaxed and approachable and before I knew it, I was in a hand stand! Her experience is unparalleled! The cuisine was outstanding. Every meal unique and tasty. That goes for desserts too. It was extra special to share this experience with my sister and cousin!

Donna did a great job creating distance and safety during Covid as well. The environment was just right! I would love to go back!

I loved my stay at the Sewall house! I highly recommend going there to relax, learn about yoga, eat healthy, and enjoy nature. Donna the owner treats all guests as family with love and care. Donna lives the life of a Yogi from the heart.
The Chef is helpful and happy to answer any questions about the meals. Each meal is unique and has amazing flavors. When you enter the house there are always delicious smells of what is being created for your next meal.
The house has been kept in the family from the very beginning. The rooms are set up in a similar time period of the house. There is a lovely sitting area with a bay window to curl up with a good book. The large wrap around porch is also inviting to sit and relax.
I am looking forward to going back for my next stay.

My yoga retreat at Sewall House was just what I was looking for with a few days off – restful, casual atmosphere and plenty of time to enjoy the surrounding area, with welcoming, thoughtful, and knowledgeable staff members. Our yoga practice was tailored to my level and was at once challenging, lighthearted, educational, and non-judgmental with varied styles offered. The food was delicious and the pets (dog and two cats) were ever-loving. Additionally, the location itself is stunning with Mattawamkeag Lake two miles down the road and easy access by car to Baxter State Park for the avid hiker (less than an hour drive away). I’ve already recommended to a couple friends and hope to return. Thank you Donna, Ajeet, and Meow for sharing this special place of warmth, healing, and joy.

I recently went to a writing and yoga retreat at the Sewall house, after being decades overdue for a personal vacation. It was an AMAZING experience all around! Donna is a fabulous host, fun yoga teacher and I loved the laid back atmosphere. The vegetarian cuisine was so delicious, I didn't even miss eating meat at all, or feel any desire to consume the snacks I'd brought from home. The house is beyond beautiful too; each room has it's own personality, evidence of the hard work invested in the upkeep of this precious historical home. I would have been happy with any one of the rooms, much like the people I met there. We each have our own unique, creative talents to share with the world. This house inspires that energy. I highly recommend this yoga retreat house!

Thank you SO much for finding us and choosing us for your long overdue vacation for you!! We value our guests time chosen for self care and self nurturance and work to create a loving embrace with the energy of this National Historic Registry family home, where another prolific writer was healed from his asthma..a young college student named Theodore Roosevelt! The annual writing workshop is always so amazing to be a part of seeing people open up, connect, blossom and heal! We particularly enjoyed your sense of humor and how you made us all laugh..a fabulous and important part of living joyfully..and healing with yoga, connection and the surrounding nature as well as your shared wonderful writing!

Donna and her staff were absolutely delightful. We had an amazing experience in a very historically significant and warm setting. Donna is an excellent host and goes out of her way to ensure that the guests are well fed, well taken care of, and comfortable.

The grounds are lovely, quiet, and highly conducive to a very relaxing retreat. We also explored nearly lakes, markets, and local scenes.

The yoga and meditation sessions were very helpful, strengthening and healing. Would definitely do it again.

Go to the Sewall house! You will eat delicious food, practice grounded yoga, and breathe the fresh Maine air. If you want to heal, to recharge, or to relax, the Sewall house is the place to be.

I did the 200 hour yoga teacher training at the Sewall house and could not be more grateful for my time there. Donna and Lindsay are so loving and full of wisdom. It truly felt like a home away from home.

The lake is beautiful, the beds are cozy, and the people are caring. Go and stay for as long as you can!

I recently returned from Sewall House where I attended the three-week intensive Yoga Teachers Training, but found myself staying longer in order to write a play, and emotionally heal. From the moment I spoke with Donna on the phone, until the end of my stay, I could see that she was a kind soul, and one of the lucky few, who have been fortunate to find their true calling. With 30 year of experience teaching yoga, the classes were lead in the most professional manner. Her wisdom, wit, and attention to detail were evident from the start. I am lucky and fortunate to have studied with her. Throughout my stay I met and engaged with many. From my incredible fellow trainees to the visitors from Alaska, Florida, Ohio, Michigan, DC, Indiana, Wisconsin, local New England, etc., I met so many wonderful people that I will always remember. What brought each of us to Sewall House was something different and unique, what we all gained was a common peace of mind. I can simply write that the vegetarian cuisine was delicious, the daily meditation was serene, the three daily hours of yoga (2 x 1.5) were both diverse and challenging, the optional multiple excursions of hikes, local visits & kayaking were pleasurable, the staff was eager and on top of fulfilling all our needs, etc., but that would miss the point. In 1879 Donna's great-grandfather William Wingate Sewall took a young Harvard student named Teddy Roosevelt and helped him heal. It was a place of healing 142 years ago, and Donna has made sure that the tradition, and legacy of Sewall House, continues.

Thank you so very much for this more than kind review..and for grasping the gist of what Sewall House has been since its inception in 1865(and as a retreat since 1997) and what I/we aspire to continue with love and devotion- to yoga, to the area (which is beautiful with lakes waterfalls and hikes in pristine uncrowded northern Maine) and to the healing of the combination of healthy tasty whole food, the house, the area (our tiny town included) and meditating with new friends...which in his own way Theodore Roosevelt did here too. again- thank you! as a scribe we appreciate so very much your words here...our goal is to serve others in their life journey and we thank you for acknowledging this!
