Arriving at Oak Gables is stunning. The effect of rather posh farm house on steroids. There is a beautifully kept lawn which sweeps up to the house and then there are cottages near by. The house itself is probably a few 100 years old, very simple construction with old growth timber. Nothing fancy, no moulded architrave but rather a piece of plain 5"x1". Great big floor boards and period decor. Now for the practical stuff: comfortable beds, spotlessly clean, nice big dining and sitting rooms, with family art on the walls. Breakfast was just right and you can easily walk into town for dinner, if you don't want to drive. The King Eider pub (see my Trip Advisor review) is one of a few good looking eating places in town. Or just hang out in the gardens round the house. The landlady is wonderful with interesting tales. We could only spend one night here but I really want to go back.…
My room at Oak Gables was booked by someone else. Imagine my delight at being able to stay at this gem. Martha, the innkeeper is friendly, outgoing, and always has a great story. She is truly invested that her guests are happy and have everything they need. I would stay at Oak Gables again in a heartbeat!
Martha, the inn owner was friendly and accommodating. Her property is gorgeous and her rooms are clean and comfy. The area is peaceful with a pool, lovely landscapes and the river. Her B & B is a short walk to the town. Martha made a special effort to celebrate my mother-in-law's bday. A wonderful experience.
My October '17 stay at Oak Gables was as pleasant as my last two stays there. This trip I stayed for the first time in the Guest Wing......a bright, delightful room with kitchen & full bath, and a beautiful view of the Thomaston River! Martha is the perfect hostess....welcoming & gracious! I highly recommend Oak Gables and the surrounding area for your vacation.
We recently stayed for 2 nights in the main house at Oak Gables with another couple and were thrilled to have the entire house to ourselves. The owner, Martha Scudder, was so welcoming and entertaining and made us feel right at home. She prepared a delicious breakfast each morning and even worked around our schedule so that we could catch an early ferry the day of our departure. The beds were comfy and the shower had excellent pressure that I wish we had at home. The Damariscotta river is visible from the beautiful property and there's a lovely pool to enjoy when the weather is warm (which unfortunately it wasn't when we visited). Staying with Martha at Oak Gables was like visiting a warm and extremely peppy Grandma and her furry (but very quiet) pup, Dickens.
