So we left home knowing we would be in Bangor one night then were going to "wing it" without any plan at all for a couple days. We called OCRK from the road about an hour a way. Once the owner Lori answered the phone we knew we found what we were looking for. Not wanting the crowds of Bar Harbor/ Acadia we stayed here for 2 nights to enjoy a relaxing quiet couple days. The beach at the campground was nice, the grounds well kept, toilets were very clean, and free hot showers. This place is so friendly and welcoming. Lori suggested a few things for us to check out (the Harriman Point Preserve was a great walk/swim). We will defiantly be staying again to spend more time in the area.
My husband and I take an annual camping trip (with my parents) every mid-September. We have certain criteria when we camp: we want a quiet, peaceful campground, where partying is not the objective, and a place where we can be just as happy sitting at the site as we are exploring the surrounding areas. It is also important to my husband (in particular) that our site have some sort of "view". I stumbled upon OCRK doing a Google search for "oceanfront camping in Maine". I emailed the owner (Lori) to see if by chance she still had a site with a view available, and surprisingly, she did! Right from our first correspondence, Lori was professional, friendly and timely in her responses. Lori took the time to describe the sites that she thought would meet our criteria. We decided to book tent-site T8, and were very surprised that Lori did not take a deposit or payment up front. She likes to do things "the old fashioned way" and we thought that was very refreshing! The drive took us 8 hours, and I called ahead to alert Lori to our late arrival. Upon pulling up in the dark, we found the office area well lit, with the door open, and a map/campground information waiting for us. It was easy to find our site, and we got set up quickly. The site was great! We had a view of the water (it is not ON the water, but the view is beautiful, and a short walk will get you there), it was perfectly level for our tent, and also had a fire ring and picnic table. Regarding the sites: If you are looking for privacy T8 would probably not be the best site for you, but since we didn't care about that, it was perfect for us! In my opinion, the most private sites in the campground are: 1-5, as you will be in the woods, (but will have no water view). Sites T8, T10, T12 have water views, with T8 and T10 having the best views. T12 has only a little bit of a view, (through the trees), but is the most private of those three. Note that throughout the campground there are many spigots for drinking water, and this campground has no flush toilets, only spotlessly clean odor-free outhouses! A well maintained gravel road runs throughout. There is a dish-washing station (we LOVED this feature), two outdoor showers,(yes!!), as well as an enclosed shower...all of which are at the office area, are completely free to use, and again, are spotlessly clean with the hottest water! In this same area, there is also a sink for hand/face washing, with soap/paper towels/mirror. All of these areas are very well lit, so even if you visit at night, you will feel comfortable. We spent our first day at the campground beach, which is narrow and not very long, abutted by private property on either end. During high tide, the water comes up close to shore so there is not a lot of room to sit, but we had just enough space for our camp chairs. Also, although you are on the ocean, the campground sits on Eggemoggin Reach, so if you are expecting crashing ocean waves, you will not find that here. The waves are gentle (if at all), which was perfect for us. My husband bared the cold, and swam out to the floating dock off the shore! The water was great for wading or swimming and was crystal clear. Beautiful! Lori gave us some great information on local hiking trails so we headed out for the next two days and did some exploring. The trails we chose were just far enough away to include a nice drive of the surrounding area, and the trails were relatively easy, taking us through beautiful forests, and then leading out to the ocean for some spectacular views. We also visited a cute little general store, a gift shop, and the town of Blue Hills, which had just enough to keep you busy for a few hours. We could have easily filled our days for the week, but with a heavy rainstorm moving in, we decided to cut our trip short. :( We were sorry to say good-bye! Lori (and her mom's) hospitality was nothing we have experienced before...in the short time we were there, we felt like old friends. They are warm, welcoming, funny, hard working and provide everything you need to make your stay comfotable. I will also say that I can hardly think of a campground that we have ever visited, where the guests were just as friendly, and who were so respectful. By 8:30 each night, you could hear a pin drop. Just the way we like it! We hope to return someday, and if you decide to visit, we can't imagine you will be disappointed! Thank you, Lori & Carol!! Best wishes for another successful season in 2022!…
Beautiful campground with ocean views! Exceptionally clean and owners are very friendly. You can even have lobsters delivered to your campsite! They only have electric at sites but there is water available to fill. I would highly recommend a stop if you are in the area.
What a fabulous campground. Shore access was wonderful. Outhouses were spacious and clean. Nice gravel road throughout. I don't think there is a bad site anywhere. Lori is helpful and friendly. A great place, can't wait to come back next year with friends.
My first contact with Lori, [host/owner] was by a few email exchanges and I I knew that this the right place to stay, We spent 3 nights in August in our RV 5th wheel and plan to visit again. The owners and staff are super friendly, kind, and helpful. You feel welcomed in the first minute upon arrival and Lori answers any questions with a positive attitude and she wants to make you feel as family. The place was very well maintained and clean with nice spacing between sites.
Such a great campground off the beaten path and well worth the drive off Rt. 1. Reserving our spot was quick and easy with great communication. Upon arrival we were greeted by the very friendly owners. The grounds are very clean and very well manicured. The privies and showers were always neat and clean. And the ocean beach is awesome! We hope to return next summer.
This is our third camping trip to OCRK and we fall in love with it more every time. Lori is the perfect hostess, so welcoming and always working on improving the campground. We love the big sites, the views and the access to the beach. The showers are so clean as are the outhouses. Already booked for next year!
From the first contact with Lori, I knew that this was going to be a great stay. We camped here for four nights in July and wished we could have stayed longer. The owners and staff are super friendly, kind, and helpful. The place was immaculately clean.( I've never used a pit toilet that was so clean and non smelly!) The little beach was a great resource. It was quiet and very dog friendly. It isn't the fanciest place...there aren't full-hookups, no pool, no wifi, but what a lovely base camp for sight seeing around the area. Do NOT pass up having lobsters delivered right to your site. Follow Lori's directions for cooking them over the fire with sea weed and sea water and you'll have the best lobster you've ever eaten. I would not hesitate to camp here again.
A gem of a find at the last minute. Location on the water is wonderful great path to the beach. Lots of paddle boards A cooling swim after a hike. Well designed and expertly built campground. Enjoyed the enclosed outdoor showers which we were allowed to use after a bike ride inspite of checking out earlier Best of all are the host/owner and her mom “Cookie. They were both so upbeat and energetic. Even if the campground wasn’t as wonderful as it is I would return just to see them. Definitely will be planning a return to the area
Oceanfront Camping at Reach Knolls is quiet, clean, and very reasonably priced. It is the perfect location for exploring a gorgeous area. The owners could not be any nicer or friendlier. We felt very welcomed.
