My husband, mother and I stayed at this Inn in February for a wedding we were attending in the area. As soon as we walked into the building we were hit with the smell of stale cigarette smoke. This odor was also in the rooms and impacted our sleep and overall breathing through the night. I could not get a window open to allow fresh air in and felt as though I was choking all night. The owner was very nice but the smell of smoke was unbearable so we left as soon as we woke up and will never go back.

We were shocked and disappointed by our experience at the Chapman Inn. My husband and I and another couple chose this B&B based on previous reviews. I feel like we were duped from the moment we arrived. Walking up to the Inn, we saw the sign on the entance door stating “No Smoking.” But as soon as we stepped in to the main door, we were hit with the strong smell of cigarette smoke! We were greeted by Cathy (where was the wonderful owner Sandy we read about? We never saw her) and once we confirmed our reservation, we were asked to pay immediately for our stay. It seemed strange to us since we’ve never in all our years of staying at B & B’s been asked to pay upfront, but we did so in good faith expecting the great experience we had read about in the previous reviews. After paying, we were brought upstairs to our room. All the while, the smell of cigarette smoke continued throughout the house. Red flags went up! The radiator in our room was stone cold, as was our room! There are no thermostat controls in the rooms. It’s mid-January. Shouldn’t the heat have already been on? We had to ask Cathy to please put the heat on. She did. After we closed the door to our room, the smell of fresh cigarette smoke continued to pour in from under the door. We took a towel from the bathroom and stuffed it under the crack of the door so that we could stop the continuous stream of cigarette smoke from coming into our room. There were no other guests at the Inn at that time except my husband and I, and our friends, and we are all non-smokers. We asked Cathy why we could smell cigarette smoke and she said that she smokes, but that she goes outside. Clearly this is not the case. We couldn’t stand the smell! If we hadn’t already just paid upfront, we would’ve walked out right then and there. That evening, we tried to relax downstairs in the living room, but we couldn’t even stay down there because the cigarette smoke began to burn the back of our throat’s. We decided to call it a night and get some sleep. The next morning, we went downstairs for breakfast, and the dining area was extremely cold. Again, it’s mid-January, and we came down for a warm breakfast in an ice cold dining room. My friend spotted the thermostat on the wall, and turned it up. My breakfast was just OK. Definitely not the world-class breakfast that was described in a previous review. I have never written a bad review for any B&B before, and I’ve stayed at many! I hope this will save someone else from a very bad experience!

My husband and I along with another couple stayed at this so called bed and breakfast. As soon as we arrived one of the workers immediately asked us for the full payment of our rooms. We barely had a chance to get in the door and she wanted the money right away. As soon as we entered the building we were hit with a strong smell of cigarette smoke. The whole place including our rooms smelled like smoke! I then asked the worker, who’s name is Kathy if people are allowed to smoke inside the bed and breakfast.. she said that smoking was NOT allowed. When I asked her why the whole place smelled like smoke she said that was because she smokes! I told her that there are signs on the door of the bed and breakfast saying that no smoking is allowed. She then said that she smokes outside, but there is no way that’s true because of the strong smell throughout the entire building. Our rooms were freezing cold, and we could not find a thermostat in the room to adjust the temperature. So we then asked the worker Kathy, and she said that none of the rooms have thermostats and that she has to turn on the heat! So we asked if she could please turn the heat on. We then left for a while because the rooms were freezing and we couldn’t stand the smoke smell! The breakfast in the morning was a big disappointment! First of all you cannot choose your breakfast time, most bed and breakfasts ask you what time you would like breakfast, but here they don’t. We were told what time we would be served breakfast. The breakfast area was freezing because the heat was not on! The pancakes were very dry and bland, and the eggs and sausage was below average and low quality. The water in the shower does not get very hot and it takes a long time for the water to warm up. This has been the absolute worst bed and breakfast we have ever stayed at! We will definitely NOT be back, It’s a low quality, smoke filled bed and breakfast. BEWARE!

I should first say I am generally not a fan of b&bs. We were booking many rooms in many places and ended up here not realizing it was a B&B. With that said, It was a great stay. Our room was excellent, but I have no idea about other rooms in the house. This room had a private door to the outside. It had a private bathroom with a very small shower. The room itself was huge, made up of a living room and then a huge bedroom. Every room in the house can't be this size, the house isn't big enough, so you would have to be clear about what you want when you book the room I suppose or just get lucky like we did. The host and staff were very nice and the breakfast was good as well. Felt like you were visiting with friends. For us it was a great stay, but if we had to share a bathroom or didn't have our own door to the outside world, the review would probably be different.

On the positive side, the owner and host, Sandy, is a kind person. The inn is also centrally located and it was convenient to walk to shops and dinner. However, if you have allergies you may want to choose a different place. If someone would have written a review about the smells in the rooms, I could have saved myself from having to take meds and feeling poorly. We stayed upstairs in room 7 and as soon as Sandy opened the door to go up the stairs to the room, I knew I was in trouble. The room was incredibly musty and also smelled of smoke. On top of that there was a perfumed smell which I tracked down to two Glade room deodorizers. I closed up the Glade sticks and mentioned it to Sandy and she removed them. Other people have written about the uneven floors etc. those are to be expected in a historic inn. When we made our reservation, I told Sandy that I didn't eat pork or beef and that I drank decaf coffee. She apologized the first day for not having decaf and said she needed to shop for it. The next day there was still no decaf. I was also looking forward to the afternoon cookies that so many people wrote about and there were no cookies during our stay. We originally had a reservation for three days, but the musty, smoky environment took a toll on my health and we let Sandy know that we would be leaving a day early. She did refund our last day and we certainly appreciated that. One last thing, there was no individual control for our heat and it was cold. I had to call down to ask Sandy to turn on the heat. She turned it on right away and we were comfortable enough temperature wise.
