Experience antebellum splendor in this circa 1796 National Historic Register plantation home renowned for its mystery, history and intrigue. Our recently opened Restaurant 1796 is a beautiful blend of the old and the new, centered around open hearth cooking on site. Beautiful historic home and great tours explaining the history of the house and gardens. No ghosts seen or felt but other visitors told us of ghostly experiences they had. We stayed in the main house, which to me is worth the money. We had the Judge suite and it is definitely a suite, you basically have the whole side of the house. Very large area, bathroom has a claw foot tub, which is very nice to soak in. We ate at the restaurant on the property, it was ok, not the best we've eaten but it was good. If you don't feel like going off the property, it would be ok. The cafe was ok too for breakfast. Staying at the house, you did get unlimited coffee and juice and a choice of breakfast menu items. The gift shop has lots of local craft items that are really pretty and well priced. Some are a bit expensive. We went in November, and were told by the manager that they stay booked most of the time in the fall and spring. It is Louisiana, so it is hot during the summer! The gardens were ok, not the prettiest I have seen on plantations, but it was November and things tend to die out at that time. May have to visit in the late spring when everything is in bloom. I didn't see too many activities for children and there were no children there when we went. They did have a tour bus onsite when we arrived and apparently it is a frequent stop for tours as they head to New Orleans. Overall, it's a great place to visit!

I have been to The Myrtles at least 5 times for the tour but never stayed overnight. For my daughter's birthday, I decided to get a room for the both of us. We stayed in the John Leake room. The room was very clean, charming and authentic looking. Like I said earlier, I've taken the tour here at least 5 times, each time with a different tour guide. On this trip, we had Ms. Connie. She was FANTASTIC!!!! Everytime I tour here I learn something different on each trip. The grounds are beautiful and well kept. The staff is great, no complaints here. My daughter fell asleep before me. I was about to fall asleep when all of a sudden there was a very loud sound from the attic right above our bed. It sounded as if someone was dropping something heavy on the attic floor over and over. I tried to wake up my daughter so that she could experience what I was experiencing but she was out. A little later I did hear slow footsteps on the old creaking wooden floor in my room as if someone was walking. My daughter captured an older looking house slave in a photo and I captured what looked to be a young boy sitting on a tree branch watching us that night. The only Con that I have to say, is the morning breakfast. I've stayed in other bed and breakfasts before and had a lavish freshly cooked meal served at a beautiful antique table sitting with other guests. This breakfast that was served just looked like any complimentary breakfast that you would get at a hotel. Not much to choose from either. Powdered scrambled eggs, sausage links, undercooked grits, fruit, biscuits that you can get out of the freezer, and your morning drinks, coffee, milk, orange juice, and water. This was very disappointing for this bed and breakfast. You would expect a fabulous fancy breakfast for a place as famous as The Myrtles Plantation.

The setting is simply magnificent, from the rooms to the gardens, in which you can stroll. The property can also be visited (guided tours take place in English every half hour). The 1796 restaurant, which is located on the property, offers varied and tasty dishes, in a fairly reasonable price range for the USA (with, for once, a limited quantity of fried foods). I highly recommend !

My husband & I went Sunday - Monday overnight stay at The Myrtles .To get to the point, our room (William Winters) and bathroom was not what I would call clean. Dirty Qtip on the bathroom floor, and hair,in various places, from previous guests in bathroom absolutely not acceptable & disgusting . The rug in the room hasn’t seen a vacuum in a while. The bed we slept on was like sleeping on creaky old boards for $250 a night a “non-creaking” bed would have been nice. You can have the plantation look/feel without having your guests sleep on a motel mattress and what felt/sounded like (creaky) old boards. The day and evening tour was absolutely great :) Charles and Mrs.Sharon were full of interesting facts, great stories, and an obvious passion for their job. The complimentary breakfast was a joke…On Monday morning,we were told there were no breakfast meats available on Mondays because that’s the delivery day. I would think if “you” know that Monday is a day that all the meats for the breakfast menu wouldn’t be available someone in management would make some adjustments or order extra ??! I ended up with a breakfast sandwich with an egg and pimento cheese … very disappointing! There was a tour bus full of guests pulling up as we were leaving The Myrtles on Monday….I can only imagine a tour bus full of tourists were really happy(sarcastic)to find that no breakfasts meats were available ….. The 1776 restaurant advertised as being nice attire requested was sort of a joke. As people were walking in with shorts ,and very casual clothes. I guess that’s minor but just something to mention. You won’t be “under dressed” if you show up in shorts & sweat pants…. I will end this on a positive the staff were friendly and helpful and that truly is important and lacking in many places. I hope this information will help and maybe someone in management will take time to understand that these are things not to simply “complain” about but rather to communicate there are some things that guests may experience but may never say anything about…

If you don’t take it too seriously it’s actually quite good fun. We started with the evening ghost tour, with our tour guide dressed in period costume. An entertaining performance with creepy stories for each room in the house, and all the lights turned down low for extra atmosphere. We stayed the night in one of the suites but have to inform you that we actually had a really good sleep with no bumps in the night to report. It’s a lovely building and a rare opportunity to spend the night in such a place. The restaurant is ok, but our over confident waiter, who didn’t write our order down, brought two completely different meals out to us and frankly the complimentary dessert (one portion between two) really didn’t cut it. I overheard the fella behind the bar asking his colleague which bottle was the house white and noticed him pouring sparking wine into a red wine glass, so I think a bit of staff training wouldn’t go amiss but all in all we enjoyed ourselves and are glad we went.

We stayed for one night in the corner Octavia garden room. Beautifully decorated but a few things to improve: 1) get bigger towels; 2) need better lighting by the mirror; 3) bed was a little firm for our tastes and sheets were thin; 4) tv is really small . I’m glad the breakfast was complimentary because it was cold and very slim pickings. And the staff proceeded to load the dishwasher (which is in the dining area) very loudly when we were still eating. That could have waited until breakfast was over. The grounds are absolutely beautiful and well kept. Great picture spots. Staff was friendly. Tour was very interesting and the young 18 yr old tour guide did a fantastic job.

We had a lovely time on our recent stay. As many others have observed, we found the staff to be exceptional. From the receptionist, to the restaurant(s) wait-staff, to the tour guide all were friendly, professional, helpful and charming.
Our room, the Fannie Williams Room (aka The Doll Room) was comfortable and suited us just fine. The small collection of antique-ish porcelain dolls on display added an air of fun spookiness. Unfortunately, they chose to not waste any spectral energy on us, so we enjoyed a sound and undisturbed sleep. The old home and grounds are quite beautiful and we very much enjoyed learning about its history and legends from our delightful tour guide Raney.
Our meal at the on-grounds restaurant, 1796, was great: the casual but refined atmosphere was relaxing—and best of all we could actually hold a conversation—a rarity in today’s restaurant scene. (We actively avoid even nice restaurants with good food if they are too loud.)
To sum up, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at The Myrtle’s and have yet to meet anyone who has not.

We booked a morning tour and our guide, Janice. I believe, was great! Very informative and passionate about the plantation and its history. She's very patient with the group also. You can even stay overnight in the main house or the other accommodations on the grounds, booking on their website. Highly recommended

I love the myrtles. I’ve been so many times I’ve lost count. I’ve stayed in the house, care takers cabin and the newer cabins. Each time is a truly u inquest experience. My next trip book is to stay in the general David Bradford suite. The last time I stayed in the house was in the doll room. Nothing super creepy happen but you could feel the energy in the room. Our lamp went off and on by itself a few times but we took it as they were telling us it was time to go to bed. If you use the bathroom a lot or stay up late maybe book a cabin. We felt like we were being too loud as you can hear every noise people in other rooms make. Also the bathroom is down the hall and every time you get up and open your door, then the bathroom door you can’t help but feel like you’re waking up the entire house. With that being said the cabins have en-suite bathrooms and you can stay up as late as you want without disturbing too many ppl. The cabins don’t have tvs but who needs one while out there? As always, I am extremely excited about my upcoming trip! I cannot wait to stay in that room.

The Ruffin Sterling room smelled very badly, like vomit. When my friend and I were so graciously invited to see other guests suites inside the home, their rooms did not have that smell. I think the rug needed to be changed in our room. The garden rooms are much, much better so it was nice to stay there the second night of our trip. The breakfast was great though! The tour guides were very good as well, both the day and night tours. A word of caution though… for any ghost hunters, psychics, highly sensitive persons, or empathy…this place is truly haunted and I’m not sure that all the spirits on the property are friendly. We conducted an EVP session in the gazebo and I regret not wearing some kind of spiritual protection jewelry or blessed objects. Several people we didn’t know participated and saving was needed afterwards. In our room in the Ruffin Sterling suite we could hear rustling, the sound of heavy petticoats and both of our cameras shut off at 1:30am after we heard footsteps in the hallway. The sound of a small child saying, “Mother” could be heard on camera. What spooked me most is that the spirits in our EVP sessions new people’s names and repeated several times. I can cross The Myrtles off my bucket list now, but it is not for the faint of heart if you are sensitive to spirit energy.

Hard to say. Every time we go it’s a different experience. I will say if you go looking for it you’ll never see anything. If you go and just have a good time and not try too hard they will make themselves known.
The Myrtles Plantation is in St. Francisville, LA which is close to 2 hours north of New Orleans. I traveled to New Orleans in May from Texas, via the Baton Rouge route and I also looked into Red Stick tours, out of Baton Rouge. We chose to drive instead which, if you have a car, is your better option as the admission price for the Myrtles tour is $15, so the cost for that transport was and additional $40 per person. If not, I think Red Stick may be your only option and it may only be out of Baton Rouge, not New Orleans. If you are interested in plantations, check Grey Line Tours which does operate transport tours out of New Orleans. Oak Alley is the more prominent of plantations to see out of New Orleans I think.
There are more places to choose from in the Saint Francisville area.
