Visited this hotel for a one night stay ,birthday treat for my brother in law .23/7/2021 Hotel itself is fantastic . superb rooms lovely grounds and excellent staff .our room was the Laburnam superior I highly recommend . unfortunately the evening meal was the worst I can remember in all my 80 odd years .The portions were miniscule to say the least my starter consisted of two very small marble sized rolls of salmon with a small circle of dabs of whatever and would have fit on a table spoon and swallowed in one go totally tastless (not due to coved ) my Partner had a duck starter the duck portion x 2 was the size of two fifty pence pieces accompanied with a sort of spring roll ..The duck was extremely thin portion she was not happy with it and gave me the second small piece to try , i was still chewing it when the main course arrived .My main course was the Lamb , I was advised that it would be pink ,OK by me .Could hardly find it on the plate and there was not a lot else on the plate tough as old boots ,inedible with a 5 pound supplement ? went to bed hungry for the first time in 75 years . (War time rations )did get an appolagy and some complime, nterary drinks but would have preferred the advertise super chef food In my opinion the Hotel and Staff were badly let down by the Quality and quantity of the food and this must be the responsibillity of the Chef I do not normally give bad reviews I just do not visit the establishment again but on this occasion because of the claims made regaring the food and the price invoved thought it necsesary to air my disapointment Furthe more on our check out there were considerable discrepances on the bill that took some time to resolve ????

Arrived with my daughter for a long-awaited spa day - £170pp, so not a cheap option. It’s the hotel and spa most local to me and I wanted to see what it had to offer with regard to possible future gym/spa membership. Let’s just say, after today, I shan’t be bothering…. When we arrived we were asked by the receptionist (who later turned out to be the Spa Manager, to our great surprise) whether ‘someone’ had told us in advance that: a) “the steam room isn’t working but there’s still two other rooms you can use in the thermal suite”. Well, great, but we like to use a steam room, not a sauna and we’d like to use all three really. b) “you can’t have the two-course lunch” (which forms part of the offer we’d paid for and which we’d selected especially over other offers which included the afternoon tea they were now trying to give us instead). “Nothing to do with COVID restrictions”, we were told, “more to do with us being short-staffed” c) despite restrictions having been lifted that day, there was still a timetable of use of the facilities for each person to limit usage The answer to all of the questions above was “no, no one had had the courtesy or foresight to let us know”. I would have thought that, as the Manager, she might have made those calls in advance herself, given that they are customer service/experience issues. We held out for the lunch we’d booked and, with some irritation, off the Manager went to ask the restaurant if they could accommodate our ‘request’ (for what we’d paid for). She came back and said we could have lunch, but we’d have to go over to the hotel restaurant and we’d have to get dressed for it, (no spa robes allowed). Ok. Next, we asked if we could have our Welcome Drink of champagne, as per the offer. “It’s Prosecco”, the Manager told us gruffly and went off to get it. She came back with two glasses of Prosecco and questioned why the notes on our booking suggested we had been ‘comp’d’ some additional Prosecco. She mentioned my son-in-law’s name and we thought maybe he had organised it. I’ll come back to that later. We overheard ladies (members) talking in the boiling hot changing rooms about how various facilities weren’t in working order and wondering how people paying good money for spa days were putting up with it. Specifically she said the jets in the pool weren’t working. I asked the Spa Manager about this and she said “yes , that’s right they’re not working as they should but if you want them on I can go downstairs and manually do it. You just have to come and ask me to do it”. Treatments - the therapists for both mine and my daughter’s treatment were absolutely lovely and professional. Unfortunately for me, I was taken to the back of the building where two treatment rooms adjoin the small gym area. The wall between the treatment rooms may as well have been made of a sheet of paper for all of the soundproofing it provided. I could hear every intimate, personal detail of the treatment going on in the next room, I could even tell you how firm the guy in there wanted to have his massage delivered. I’ve been to spas around the world and I’ve never experienced such an unsuitable area for treatments. My suggestion would be that only one of these rooms should be used at a time. I told the Spa Manager after my first treatment that the room was unsuitable for the reason of poor soundproofing.. Nonetheless my therapist guided me back there to the same room for my second treatment later. She told me no one had fed back to her that I didn’t want to be in that room or she’d have organised another one. I guess the Spa Manager felt that my feedback wasn’t valid and not worth passing on or acting upon. Back to the Prosecco saga - we got dressed for lunch and headed to the hotel where a perfectly amiable guy on Reception made quite a big deal out of checking our names on his Restaurant list and then looking around (at a dining room and a garden filled with empty tables), as if it was going to be tricky to squeeze us in. Then said “sit wherever you like”. Slightly bemused, we did so. We asked the waiter to explain two of the four dishes, eg what’s in the ‘seasonal’ ravioli and could we have a croque monsieur without the ham if possible. He didn’t know the answer to either of these questions but set off cheerily to find out. Before he left we asked him if he would also find out about the additional Prosecco we’d been advised about and he returned with a bottle with ice bucket and the answers to our queries.…. This is where things got strange and uncomfortable, to cut a long story short, somewhere along the line someone had decided we weren’t actually going to be comp’d Prosecco after all. Embarrassingly (although luckily the tables near us were still empty) another employee, clearly higher up the pecking order than the original waiter, came out to grab the bottle back from our table and told us he’d only leave it with us if he put it on our account and we could sort it out with Spa Manager later (as she had just told him on the phone that we weren’t due any, despite our earlier conversation). We told him to just take it away, it was embarrassing for us and that we were furious that the Spa Manager had not come to sort it out herself. He then offered “from his own goodwill” to give us a glass each. We declined. Enough damage had been done. Or so we thought…. Headed back to the spa after lunch and noticed the Spa Manager quickly looking busy and picking up the phone as we arrived. So we went to get changed and came back out to ask her why she hadn’t come to sort out the Prosecco debacle. At which point, she held up her hand imperiously to silence an employee who tried to help and said, “you were only supposed to get another glass for a birthday” (it wasn’t either of our birthdays) “not a bottle”. Fine, we said, but you are the one who told us we were being comp’d one earlier, we didn’t ask for it. I also pointed out to her that we had re-checked the offer online and we were in fact due to have a glass of champagne on arrival, not the Prosecco she’d given us. Her response? “Well, apologies” (said with a shrug and in the least apologetic tone anyone could use). And with that, we were pretty much dismissed. Oh, as we walked away, she did say, again grudgingly, “well you can have a glass here if you want me to get it now?” No thanks. Day ruined due to her attitude, broken facilities, broken lockers, excessively hot, cramped changing rooms, unsuitable building fabric, etc etc. £340 down the Swannee. Expensive lesson learnt.

We had stayed at this hotel some years ago and thoroughly enjoyed our stay so I'm not too sure why it took us this long to revisit . We were not disappointed . The staff were wonderful , polite and attentive but also engaging , such a credit to their management team . The room was well appointed , clean , comfortable and blissfully quiet at night . Bottled water and fruit in the room and lovely Espa toiletries in the bathroom . The food was lovely , well presented and delicious , warm home made bread served before the meal and the 'amuse-bouche' a special touch . The indoor pool was very warm and we even ventured outside to the hot tub , all well maintained and beautifully clean . The weather was hot and sunny so a G and T out in the garden under the shade of the trees was the perfect end to the day . I can't praise this place enough , we won't be leaving it so long to return .

Stayed two nights in July 2021. Cost £200 per night with drinks prices and surcharges at premium prices extra. Main hotel is clean and tidy but worn carpets and fittings. Upstairs every step makes floors creak. Food is very cheffy - small portions artistically arranged with spots and flowers. One good point was the quiet location but still a disappointment for our 50th Wedding Anniversary.

Really lovely hotel - rooms were beautiful and good location. Tasting menu was very tasty, if a bit inflexible. The staff were nice but obviously new and the hotel at times felt understaffed - it took 30 mins to get a cup of a tea. The spa was ok- we had a mixup with booking which was not handled well. The spa facilities are nice but due to covid the timings are hire rigid and £25 a person on top of the room bill to use the spa is quite steep. Worth mentioning they are very dog friendly- us and our dog were made very welcome and the toy and chews in the room were lovely! All in all a good stay
