Everything was beautiful until the night audit did not know how to handle an issue at night. The AC was not working properly, we called and a well- mannered Jacob responded and gave us a solution. It worked that time. Around 11 pm, the AC kept blewing hot air. We called and a front desk agent did not say his name and that should have been a sign. Anyway, he offered to bring a fan. Minutes later, I called back only to find that they had two portable fans on the entire hotel. He offered to call an engineer and I asked if it was a two pipe system. He said he doesn’t know so I asked if he can kindly ask the engineer. I asked I they have another room to sleep in since we are sweating after our evening shower I. The room that felt like 80 degrees. He said, “yes”. I then asked, if he can check the room if the AC is functioning and he said he would. Minutes later, I called since we decided maybe we can just stay in the room, take the cover off to save their housekeeping the cost for two rooms. Sebastian, night audit, offered to knock $10 off the king size bed rate to a queen size bed. It sounded like he was doing us a favor and indignant about his offer. Very insulting, since we are the ones staying in the 80 degree room. I asked to speak to a GM and he refused to give his name and call him. He claimed he was a supervisor. I came down to meet the man that clearly does not have the patience to be working a hotel. It was incredible. I got to hear that he just started his shift at 11 and how Jacob should have taken care of the issue. How his offer was good and he is doing all that he can. I asked to speak with the General Manager and again he refused. He did not even offer to have the GM call me in the morning. I asked to see the alternative room. Lo and behold, the room was at 72’ read and no cool air was coming out. The rude man continued to be very animated. As he was in front of our room, magically appeared to have learned to behaved and had a better tone. I suppose he is more comfortable speaking to a man than a woman. In the end, he shared at 12:28 am that the hotel is indeed in a two way pipe system as I suspected. Bottom line, no room alternative would have been suitable.

This is a pleasant JEWEL on our way north during COVID-19 travel. the gentleman at the front deck greeted us with Mask & gloves and a fresh new pen to sign in with. Offered us each gloves men's and ladies sizes for our uses as we travel. Only three sets of guests that night. the restaurant only offered carry out which was fine carried up to our room. Food was sooooo tasty after a 12 hour drive. Will be back in the fall hopefully under better circumstances minus COVID-19.

I was impressed by menu and reasonable prices. I had a rabbit pasta dish very good. Cocktails were not done well, stick with something simple not craft cocktails. Overall very good experience I would return

Don’t miss the opportunity to experience a meaningful piece of history. This hotel was built in the very early 1900’s to accommodate visitors to Berea College. This small liberal arts college has a rich history in the abolitionist and civil rights movements in the South. It was the first integrated college in the South and is the alma mater of the founder of Black History Month Carter G. Woodson. This college still maintains the values of racial, ethnic & cultural diversity, while providing very low cost higher education to students of low income from the Appalachian region. The hotel itself maintains its historic charm, while providing uncommon luxuries such as very spacious rooms, jetted tubs, spa robes & slippers. Rooms are equipped with Keurig coffee maker & mini-fridge. Antique furnishings add to the charm, with brass key entry & an illustrated book of area history for your enjoyment. The hotel is largely staffed by college students, as all students are required to work a campus job. Come to Berea for the arts & history & enjoy the low cost luxury of this amazing place.

Unusual college town in that the students pay their tuition by working the businesses. A lot of southern history here and the restaurant and hotel are in a restored historic building. Wonderful combination of commerce and history.
