The B&B is beautifully located, with lovely views and outdoor space for relaxing. The staff and guides (for the monarch butterfly trips up the mountain) have excellent knowledge of local wildlife and culture. Staying here is a truly unique experience.

Thank you for coming out for a second visit in the off-season--we learned a lot about our endemic bird species from you guys!

Easily accessed by bus & taxi from Mexico City, Ellen & Joel's B&B is of a very high standard. Brightly coloured bedrooms with, certainly in our case, stunning views plus a beautiful garden in which to relax after the horseback trip to see the Monarchs....More

Thank you for pointing out our accessibility by public transport--a new toll road has made the Mexico City-Zitacuaro express bus ride even faster, just two hours door to door.

Joel and Ellen are terrific hosts, and their inn gets more and more wonderful as they build their business (I was there in 2015 and 2016 as well). Not only are the rooms very comfortable (especially considering the isolation of the town and challenge of...More

It's always great to catch up with you and your family! You'll have to come back to see our new restaurant and enjoy the swimming pool and jacuzzi we're building for next season. And another round of rooftop tequila tasting of course.

Our stay was a highlight of our trip to MX. Everything from the booking process, questions about transit and safety, to our experience once we arrived, was awesome. We visited towards the end of the migration season, not sure if we would see the Monarchs....More

Thank you for directing people to the website--I've tried to explain as much as possible about when to visit, how to find us, what things cost, why we charge what we charge, food options and so on there. When I spend less time answering email...More

Completely safe! We rented a car from Mexico City with our friends and drove to the B&B ourselves. Coming back to Mexico City at the end of our trip was also easy. Joel and Ellen (the B&B owners) had Joel's cousin drive us... More

A taxi from Zitacuaro to Macheros was running 200 MXN, then when the gas price hike happened in January 2017 most taxistas raised their price to 300 MXN. You should not pay any more than this (and if you speak Spanish well... More

This trip is on my bucket list! Before I commit myself I have a few questions. 1. Is this a safe place for a solo female traveler? Anyone with personal experience? 2. How easy is it to get from the airport to the B and B?Is there an option to be picked up/ dropped off at the airport?Im not interested in navigating a foreign locale on my own by bus or even rental car. I'm more than willing to pay for this service! 3. How long should I plan to stay in order to fit everything in without stress or getting bored? What is the average stay? 4. What time of year should I plan on arriving? 5. I was excited to hear that hiking was an option over horseback( not a fan of horses). Can this be accomodated even in peak season?Should I plan on off season to be able to request all or most of the above? 6. Understand that I'm not a snob! Just an older woman who was warned about Mexico but still wants to see butterflies and enjoy time with like-minded folks.
