Detailed Reviews
I'll preface this review by acknowledging all the staffing shortages in the hospitality industry are a problem, but a recent2-night stay at the Aloft Leawood-Overland Park was disappointing, but easily fixable.
I've also stayed at multiple Aloft hotels in various cities over the years and always had an excellent experience. I will add that every staff member I encountered on my most recent visit was very courteous, professional, and helpful, so no complaints there.
I don't know if this particular Aloft was converted from another brand's property, but in any case, it's showing its age, which appears to result from a lack of everyday maintenance and cleaning.
1. The carpet runner extending from the front door to (almost) the elevator was littered with small pieces of paper, broken leaf pieces, and dirt that was tracked in or otherwise blown in from the outside, and was not vacuumed the entire time I was there. It made for a lackluster first impression that could have been corrected in 10 minutes a few times a day.
2. I can only speak for the floor where my room was located (Floor 5) the hallway carpet was very badly stained with what looked like spilled beverages. It was particularly soiled in front of the elevators. Also, some of the room number signage outside rooms were broken or had missing letters. In my room, the emergency signage card that you always find affixed to the inside hotel room doors also had been torn off, leaving unsightly glue residue, not to mention the emergency fire exit plan.
3. In my room, the shower floor drain was very slow to the point where water was puddling on the shower floor after only a few minutes. The drain cover was also rusty, causing the tile surrounding the drain to become discolored.
These may sound like minor issues, but in a hotel where my room rate was more than $200, including taxes, I was just expecting better, particularly having stayed at Aloft hotels before.
A message to the hotel's GM: The basis of maintaining the common area are being neglected, and easily fixed with a little attention to detail. First impressions are everything to create a memorable experience, and mine wasn't great at this property.

I've stayed in Aloft hotels before but since I live close to this one, and have rarely had the need to stay here as a result, I never had the chance to review it. However, due to an upcoming medical procedure (some will know what I mean) I needed a night without being disturbed and this hotel got the nod, prior to going to the hospital in the early morning.
I love the concept. I stayed in a fine example in Reno that was new, and first class; well thought out, interesting, quirky design and very friendly staff. This example, sadly isn't as new, and it looks and feels tired as a result and is, quite desperately in need of a revamp in my view. It doesn't help that the service I received was also somewhat wanting. More details are required and here they are.
It's an interesting layout. One enters on the ground floor, but the reception is on the first floor (using British designation of floors!) and it is here that the first metaphor for the hotel becomes apparent. Upon entry there are a range of leather-clad chairs/recliners etc. but one of the most prominent has a rip in the leather. Not sure how long it had been there of course but still. Also, in this autumn season, this are is replete with blown in debris and leaves from the surroundings. Minor, but sets the tone.
One goes up to reception via stairs or elevator and the reception area is nice. It is large, with a range of furniture and tables and looks like a good place to work or relax. There is a pool table etc. and this is the positive of Aloft in that it is different from your typical hotel and well laid out. Now, admittedly, I was there early for check in but the reception associate was on the phone and kept us waiting for about 5 minutes whilst completing the call and that's perfectly fine, but our presence at the desk went unacknowledged the whole time when it is perfectly possible to simply cover the receiver and say: "I'll be right with you" or similar and that didn't happen. Also, once we were helped, it was efficiently done, but somewhat dour and unsmiling. Again, minor, but illustrative of the overall vibe I felt.
The elevator to the room was also pretty dirty; stained carpeting, leaves and outside detritus in there too. The room itself was fine. Not as innovative as the more modern ones but fine. Upon entry, the shower and bathroom area is to the immediate right and works just fine but looks fairly formulaic compared to what I've seen before in Alofts, but it's all good. The bedroom area is on the other side of the wall to the bathroom and the large bed was very comfortable.
I was off and out very early in the morning so I didn't have any more staff interactions so the check in experience might have been a one off thing. So, over all, I would stay here again for sure, but I confess to a level of disappointment compared to my previous Aloft experience and, far be it from me to make suggestions, but I think this property needs some investment and/or a change of management or more management attention. I accept that COVID has made things difficult, but I have stayed in other hotels of a similar ilk that don't experience these issues.

At first the design of the rooms seems strange, but it makes sense. I liked the shower control: up or down, i.e., simple. I overheard other guests complain that they didn't have hot water, but this wasn't the case for us. The chains used to draw the shades were noisy; perhaps they could replace these with a quieter solution. Other than that, the room was clean, quiet, and the bed comfortable, albeit not a king as advertised.
I question the mounting of a towel rack right over the toilet. Why would I want to hang my towel there? Have they not heard of toilet plume? Also, unbeknownst to me, the fridge wasn't plugged in when I arrived, and I didn't realize it until a day later, after storing an open can of tuna therein. When I plugged it in, it acted as a freezer. The receptionist was kind enough to let me have another bottle of milk for free.
The grab 'n' go food station is costly. The only meatless breakfast items were a sandwich and oatmeal. The nearby Panera and Outta the Blue Cafe are also costly. I was dying for an ordinary pancake; the closest one seemed to be an IHOP half a mile away, but the weather was cold and I didn't have a car. I'd recommend doing some light grocery shopping and hope the in-room fridge refrigerates, as opposed to freezes.
I did a load of laundry, which turned out fine, but the machine and dryer only take quarters. They should update to credit cards. How many of us have eight or more quarters?
Staff was helpful and courteous. I appreciated the free use of a PC and printer in the reception area.

The hotel is clean, the staff are not helpful. There is no hot water and after reading the reviews I realized I’m not alone yet for some reason the front desk staff offer no answers and basically ask you change rooms or wait until the following morning when we check out to talk to a manager... after driving 8 hours all I wanted was a simple shower and by the time I figured out it wasn’t working we had already unpacked and settled in. I also payed for a room for my dad and it did not have hot water either. My husband said it’s possible they turn the hot water tank off after a certain time of day to save a few bucks. Not impressed.

Responded Feb 13, 2021
Dearest bfar91 I am so sorry to hear about your experience at our hotel. This is being addressed with the staff. I am also addressing the hot water issue with our maintenance staff. Again please accept an apology for all of us.

We stayed at the Aloft Leawood - Overland Park in March 2022. We arrived late (11:30 PM) and asked about valet. The desk person said that there wasn't a valet that late despite their advertisement stating that valet was available from 5 PM-12 AM. Basically they falsely advertise that they have a service that they do not provide. The desk person stated that the valet is "never there when he arrives, which is 11 PM). We had to park in a lot and walk over to the hotel with all of our luggage, in the dark. Upon check-in, we asked for extra towels and foam pillows. After 30 minutes and 3 more requests, my husband walked down to the front desk to get them himself. We were meant to stay at this hotel for 3 nights, but checked out after the 1st night because of the horrible customer service and the dingy accommodations (paint chips all over the walls, carpets dirty, soiled furniture in the room, etc.). They need to do better!!! But...we won't be back to see what, if any, improvements, they make.

We last stayed at Aloft 2 years ago. After getting a rare kid-free night, we decided to try it again since we enjoyed our stay the last time. In the last 2 years, things have gone downhill quickly. First, I checked in via the Marriott Bonvoy app, which was supposed to give us a digital key so we could go straight to our room without having to check in. I received the notification, but it never appeared in the app. At the front desk, I explained what happened. The front desk clerk said she showed that the digital key had been sent. I showed her my app and it was still nowhere to be found. She had to give us regular keys instead, however, she gave the impression that we were putting her out by her having to do this. Second, when we arrived at our room, the thermostat was set at 73 degrees, which is way too warm. We had to turn on the air conditioner just to knock the room temperature down to a comfortable 68. Next, we went into the bathroom and found that there was only 1 towel. That's it. I called the front desk and asked for a couple extra towels, which were delivered quickly (within 15 minutes). The shower was very large, however, upon turning on the water, it started to pond outside the shower door. The seal on the shower door clearly needs repaired. The location in Leawood is excellent! Close to lots of restaurants. The room itself is also good sized and was clean. The bed was very comfortable! This hotel has lots of potential, but it needs lots of work! All in all, we are disappointed that this hotel has gone downhill.

Great location, trendy design, friendly staff. However, some minor things ended up having a major impact. Mainly, I could not keep the room at a comfortable temperature. I set the thermostat at 72, and the AC would cool the room to 70, and then the HEAT would kick on to bring the temperature up to 74. Having the heat kick on when it's 90 degrees outside is quite uncomfortable. Also, the water temperature in the shower was not very precise either. The hair dryer provided was very weak, and I was disappointed to find the pool was under renovation when it was listed as an amenity on the booking site. Parking was not very convenient.

The bed wasn’t bad and the room seemed clean. But then there was no hot water, and lights not working, and the rooms ac/furnace was set and could not be adjusted. Staff was very unhelpful. And the parking, pull up out front to valet only to be told it was only for the restaurant next door. And the valet had the circle drive to the hotel blocked with vehicles they were valeting two nights out of three. You have to park down the street in a detached parking garage. One of our vehicles were broken into in the garage. I would not recommend this place.

The parking situation is awful especially arriving after dark. There was NO hot water. We turned on the shower and the faucet thinking perhaps there weren’t enough people in the hotel to get hot water through the pipes. An hour later- still only lukewarm water. Thank God we figured this out before morning! My husband tried calling the front desk several times but couldn’t get through. I called directly using my phone and got a message saying my call couldn’t be connected! NO PHONE SERVICE either. My husband went downstairs to talk to the woman at the front desk and she told him she knew the phones weren’t working- went looking for another room for us but SURPRISE! The water was no warmer than in our room. We checked out and moved to another hotel. Why is this place even open???

First, the people who worked at the hotel seemed nice. It’s in a nice location and, by suburban Kansas City standards, it’s amazingly walkable.
I stayed there about 14 years ago and, back then, it was lovely.
This time, the Wi-Fi was OK. No one mugged me.
But, this time, there wasn’t any hot water for the two days I was there. For brief periods, there was water lukewarm enough not to hurt.
The hotel people didn’t warn me about this ahead of time. I didn’t rent a car and I was too busy to get another room, so, I was stuck.
The pool was out of commission.
The room was sort of clean, but worn, and there were crumbs on the counter near the coffee station.
The hotel gave me half off, but then they added on $100 in mystery charges, so, as of now, they’ve only cut my bill $50.
Maybe the problem is just COVID plus Sprint being sold, but the property is in such weirdly bad condition that I wonder if there’s some interesting story about why it’s such a mess.

Dear Valued Guest, Thank you for taking the time to alert us of your stay and I apologize for the issues you experienced. While the $100 on your card you may be seeing is most likely the standard authorization for incidentals that will drop of should you not have any (restaurant, gift shop, etc), please contact us directly so we can research and resolve for you. Thank you also for your comments regarding our location! We hope to see you again soon and see all the upgrades we are currently working on!

No mini-frig's. There is a coffee maker, and of course ice bucket--paper/plastic cups. The location is great for shopping, dining, a place to stay and stroll around a bit...but yes...last few stays I've been there (had appts close by) once the heat didn't work, once no hot water for the shower, and last time--key card thingies weren't working so desk person had to let me into my room. Modern styling, always been clean & fresh, but last several months there is always something wrong
