Combining aman, the Sanskrit-derived word for 'peace', and kora or 'circular pilgrimage' in Dzongkha, the Bhutanese language, Amankora, is a series of lodges in the Kingdom of Bhutan's central and western valleys. The sole surviving Himalayan Buddhist Kingdom, Bhutan is one of the most remote and pristine environments on earth. To best experience all that Bhutan has to offer, Amankora can tailor journeys that include a combination of its lodges located in the valleys of Paro, Thimphu, Punakha, Gangtey and Bumthang.

Amankora Gangtey is special in that the black necked cranes come to visit annually and the locals regard this as auspicious. The lodge overlooks the valley where the cranes come to feed. So the views overlooking the valley are amazing. Binoculars are provided. There is lots to do here and we participated in a hot stone bath with was relaxing and very hot! The local Gangtey monastery is independent and not funded by the government so we took the opportunity to donate a meal to the monks. This was a most exhilarating experience which we truly enjoyed. The food was great as were the ginger honey drinks that helped us feel good due to the altitude.

Where to begin? Fabulous service. No task is too small. No request unfulfilled. They’re upset if you carry anything. When you return to the hotel, hot towels await you. Leave your room, and it is instantly cleaned. The setting overlooking the valley and up to the monastery is perfect. Food is outstanding, and special requests are, well, a specialty. Lovely spa. Be sure to try some archery — the national sport. And the hot stone bath is truly worth the effort. Excellent WiFi. We just sank into the bliss that is Amankora.

Response from AmankoraBhutan, General Manager at Amankora Gangtey

Dear filmg, Kuzuzangpo la and thank you for taking the time to write your review of your stay at Amankora Gangtey! We completely understand the long journey you make to stay in our lodge in Gangtey, which is why we want to make you feel as relaxed as possible! After reading your very kind review, I'm very happy to hear that we met and hopefully exceeded your expectation. Our traditional hot stone bath is truly special, especially at dusk. Next time you must try our potato shed dinner, if you didn't on this trip. I will be sure to pass on your wonderful words to our Gangtey team! We look forward to hopefully welcoming you back some time soon, also to experience our lodges in Paro, Thimphu, Punakha & Bumthang if you didn't visit them on this trip. Until then, safe travels! Tashi Delek, John Reed Country Manager

LOCATION Great location in the valley, overlooking everything! ROOMS Spotless! Loved the open concept! Shower needs a curtain as it gets cold and leaks all over the floor. They clean your room or leave you a surprise every time you leave! SERVICE The service is amazing! They bent over backwards for us! The food is the BEST of all the Amankora locations! EXCURSIONS The Gangtey Dzong is beautiful and walking through the town nearby was nice to see. There are many hikes that can be done in the area! If you are there during the black neck crane season, they are beautiful birds to see. DO NOT MISS the hot stone bath and the potato shed dinner!!! We also had a fantastic massage at Gangtey! GIVING BACK Stop by the black-necked crane information center to make a donation to save the sacred birds of the area!

I have written about the Amankora concept and our overall experience on the Thimpu TripAdvisor page so I won't repeat that here....apart from the fact that we loved our time staying as part of the Amankora family. Staying at Gangtey was very special. The views from the hotel are beautiful. The staff across all the lodges we stayed in provided exceptional service but I particularly fell in love with the staff at Gangtey. Such lovely people, very interested in you and trying so hard to make your stay special. Thank you! We tried archery here and had some wonderful hikes - was quite a drive to get here but so glad we did it!

We stayed here for one night and were very happy to have had the opportunity. As with all the other Amankoras, the location is amazing. The drive from Thimpu is not easy but the trip is worth it. Gangtey Monastery is framed from almost all the windows and the beautiful wide valley spreads out below. After a visit to the monastery, we hiked down into the valley and then for a short mountain-bike tour. The rooms are very spacious and elegant, the food was delicious and everyone was extremely kind and gracious. In fact, after I acclimatised to the beauty of the Amankora properties, it was the extraordinary service that continually impressed me.
