#1 of 2 B&Bs / Inns in Sabula
In the eastern most part of Iowa sit a island called Sabula and on that island sits the Castle Bed and Breakfast. On the banks of the mighty Mississippi the Castle sits. A wrap around porch that has the most breath taking views of sunrises and barges and things you just don't see everyday. The town is very small and the people are friendly, the guest that I've had say my place is the best relaxation they have ever had. It's great for hiking, biking, fishing, boating and just a simple get away...So come to the Castle B & B to just get away from it all ..

On a last minute getaway night from Wisconsin, we followed the Great River Road down to Sabula, having never been there before. Sharon kindly accomodated our mid-week reservation with only 24 hours notice, so that we would be alone in the house (although there was a long-stay guest downstairs). As we had the upstairs to ourselves, the shared bathroom and shower room were no problem. The dining room and staircase were beautiful, and the TV in the room was appreciated. Also appreciated was the invitation to use the coffee maker in the kitchen down below. We chose The Castle King Room for the view of the Mississippi, and were thrilled that the panoramic view from that room was even better than hoped. Given the time of year, the screened porch was too cold for sitting to read. But we still enjoyed the bald eagle in the tree out front! It was suprising to me that Sabula and neighboring Savanna do not have more tourist income helping their economies. Dining options were sparse - particularly on Sabula and during the mid-week. However, just a couple of miles over the bridge and up the road is the Palisades State Park with a scenic overlook you can drive to, which is not to be missed.

Beautiful, immaculately clean, PEACEFUL and COMFORTABLE - The first words that come to mind when I think of The Castle B&B in Sebula, IA. Sharon the proprietor was so nice and welcoming! The house is beautifully decorated, the bathrooms clean! And our bedroom (The King) was so comfortable! We enjoyed the views of the Mississippi River from our bedroom and spent a good many hours relaxing in the den reading and enjoying the pure silence! Although Sharon has many TVs in the house, the comfort and serenity was a welcomed time.. just what we wanted for a nice respite from our usual routine! We awoke this morning to the delicious smells rising from the kitchen below: bacon frying and coffee brewing!! It was a great way to wake up!! And there was freshly made fruit parfait, home made French toast with hot maple syrup! A mountain of bacon, orange juice, ice water and enough coffee to jump start me! The coffee was so delicious and the entire breakfast was so nice and enjoyable eating at the dining room table - the the views of the mighty Mississippi River flowing outside the front window!! Yes, it is winter and no we could sit outside to enjoy the views of the flowing river and souring Bald Eagles... but The Castle B&B in Sebula, IA was a real special treat to enjoy! And it was such a pleasure meeting the proprietor Sharon. It’s clear she takes her role as representing the best of Iowa seriously!! She offered us many suggestions of shops to visit in neighboring Savanna, IL and also wineries in IA. Whether you’ve got a single night or a weekend please take my advice and spend it with The Castle B&B in Sebula, IA. Wishing her all success and we look forward to visiting again soon!!! Please check out my photos I’ve posted too!!

On what one is looking for. The house is wonderful, interesting but in no way overdone. This is not the choice if you want a showcase quality antiques experience, this house feels like a home. Likewise the setting, often one associates island destinations with cute shops and boutiques, Sabula doesn't have any of that vibe at all. So the traveller has a great house with a friendly, down to earth hostess in an absolutely genuine setting... (here is the important part) directly on the river! If you desire to get a real feel for the Mississippi river this is a fantastic spot. Not packaged beautiful scenery, not planned experiences, but trains and eagles, huge barges and primeval backwaters, more than is easily taken in at a glance. Want to explore a fantastic and expansive ecosystem that hasn't been overrun, from a very comfortable and well appointed home base? Or do you prefer an immaculate treasure of a home, furnished with items you would love to be able to bid on? Should you go? It all depends.

Thanks for the interesting review and your right it does depend on what you want to do but the beauty of the Castle located on the banks of the mighty Mississippi River is we are in the middle. So Dubuque and Galena to the north Clinton LeClair and Davenport to the south with in a 45 minute drive. So enjoy the peace of the Castle and spend the day being a tourist but Castle Home is always there at the end of the day..

Sabula, Iowa is an island on the Mississippi. It is a small town of perhaps 600 people with great views of the river and bluffs. Our bandb was in the former home of a banker. A great front porch offered a great place to view the river at any time. The room was small, but comfortable. We did have to share a bathroom. The shower could have been a bit bigger, but it was adequate. The innkeeper prepared an excellent breakfast and made sure that coffee was available early in the morning. A delightful, quiet peaceful place to stay Ate at Bombfire pizza around the corner. Offbeat, interesting place with excellent wood-fired pizza.
