Our room with private bath was spacious and the bed comfortable. However, in our three nights there we had no hot water, and after repeated complaints were permitted to use the shower in another part of the building -- half of which had no hot water. The "Lodge" hugs the cliff-side just below the road -- which is in poor...

It seems the Tona Lodge Annex is owned by the same person, but managed by another, a young couple, who have no basic understanding of what things cost in Tanzania or the world. The "Tona Lodge Annex" was built a few years ago. Tona Lodge itself seems to be under restoration and was rather run down when we visited. The...

Sweet little place - only rated as average as it is very basic, expect a room with a bed (or a tent pitch) and local rice, beans and mandazis for foods. A perfect base to explore the Pare Mountains from.

Tona Lodge is a weird, winding complex of timber-built rooms perched on a steep mountainside and connected by some fairly long stairways. As a hotel it is just passably comfortable and you could pick out plenty of defects, not least of which are the poor lighting at night and the lack of any real menu choices. Mbaga is tiny, remote...

very good place to stay, friendly staff. to explore the south pare mountains, all you need to do is get to the Tona lodge, guided walking tours can be arranged from there. one of the best places we've been to in tanzania.

“The basement rooms smelled a bit moldy. Choose one upstairs and with a view!”

“The timber-built room on stilts at the bottom of the complex is quite nice. You wake up to cloud mists wafting through the open window. (Don't worry as security is not a concern at all.)”
