We loved the location of Vetro in Iowa City. We were able to walk everywhere (Prairie Lights Bookstore; University campus; Stanley Art Museum; etc.) Our room was spacious and light-filled. The king-sized bed was comfortable. And the staff members at Vetro were fantastic. Every single staff member we met was excellent. Special thanks to William, who went out of his way to help make our stay perfect.
In town to see our college student when we get the chance. We decided to check out this hotel right in the heart of downtown Iowa City. Not being a game day and the week before finals, we knew there would be some great rooms availble...and there were! We selected a king balcony suite...it was fantastic. We loved the decor and beautiful views. Our dinner was just down the block. We also enjoyed a lovely bread market/coffee in the morning. We will definitely visit again.
For an upscale hotel they have a long way to go. Front desk service is almost non-existent. Rooms are large and the beds are super comfortable which means a lot but there were so many issues it outweighs those factors. Toilet didn't work and they couldn't get maintenance to fix it before they left for the day so my room was downgraded (no balcony). my new room sink drained very poorly, no hangers, no blanket, 1/2 roll of toilet paper. things are shabby as other people have said and need major updating. Overall great location and nearby amenities and good bed and room size but needs a LOT of work.
As a weekly business traveler for the last 15+ years, this was the worst experience I’ve ever had. Upon arrival, I waited almost 10 minutes for someone to arrive at the desk to check me in. At first my room seemed fine. I went into the bathroom with bare feet and stepped on something kinda sharp…it was a dried up disposable contact. Since the floor was a grey concrete, I couldn’t immediately see how filthy it was until I swiped a tissue across the floor(see photos). Truly disgusting. Multiple tissues were covered in dirt and hair. The sink still had the last person’s used bar of soap and the mirror was completely smeared. The tub had at least a dozen long black hairs in it and the bath towel in the cabinet had a big pubic hair sticking out of it. So, I didn’t even take a shower during my stay. The AC unit is sooo loud, you can’t even sleep, there was a lemon seed and a broken fake fingernail in the carpet next to the bed, lol, you can’t even make this stuff up! There was no coffee available in the lobby in the morning and when I asked about breakfast, I was directed to the market next door where I had to purchase my breakfast. After reading reviews, I found out that I should have been given my $15 Diamond f&b credit, BUT, it’s at the hotel restaurant down the street. I can’t believe this hotel meets Hilton standards. Note: The hotel mgmt was made aware of my dissatisfaction and I gave them a week to respond before I submitted this review. No surprise-no response. I will never stay here again. I wish I had read the reviews prior to my stay.…
This hotel shows a lot of wear & tear, as well as some unrepaired damage - a broken door lock on a door to a balcony with other rooms' balconies adjoining, a window shade that would quickly slide down and cover the window after being raised. Plus, no food service, so you had to walk a block or so to another affiliated hotel for their breakfast. I think this barely occupied hotel is in decline along with its sister hotel, which also appeared to be nearly vacant. Great desk staffer, though! He was super helpful.
This might be long but if you are looking at staying here I think you will find it helpful. My room was a beautiful spacious king. Very modern, sparse, with polished concrete floors. Had a kitchenette and a nice bathroom with a tub and stall shower. Keep in mind, this is one of the small echelon of most expensive hotels in Iowa city. The hotel has little or no frontage so you’ll have to keep a close eye to fin one of the two parking spots in front of it to check in. Then you will be sent to the parking garage next-door to pack all your bags into the Hotel through a second floor crosswalk. They do have baggage carts if you want to come back from the parking garage and wheel it back up to the parking garage. What they don’t tell you is the second floor crosswalk can only be found on the down ramps of the parking garage, not the up ramps. If you’re confused now, you’ll figure it out if you come here… This is a lot of fun when it is 100 Degrees here. Why they have a hotel with absolutely no frontage and then no sort of Bellman to help you with bags is somewhat of a puzzlement to me, particularly in this price range. If you want your room freshened, be sure to tell them at the front desk. Of course it won’t be done, but at least you tried to tell them. I felt sorry for the housekeeper since I left a five dollar tip on the bed which she was never able to receive. My conclusion, nice room, but that’s it. There are a lot nicer hotels, particularly at this price and even less, that will take much better care of you. I have no qualms paying for a find hotel, but I expect the level of service to go with it.…
Our trip started out with a phone call confirming our reservation before we got there. She immediately told me that we could not check in early, even though I didn’t ask. When we did arrive the first room we were given was a 2 queen bedroom with open bathroom. Maybe this is a new thing, but our family appreciates a door when using the bathroom and taking a shower. If you are into this you can use the bathroom with a view of your room and outside. Thankfully they were able to move us to a room with a door. Well still a downside…the bathroom sliding door and wall are frosted glass. If someone uses the bathroom at night the light is so bright it wakes everyone and you can hear everything. The hotel looks like an parking ramp turned hotel. The flooring is cement and cold. Make sure you bring your socks. Don’t recommend getting a patio. The patio below us had chairs all over and a broken screen from a window. Once we fell asleep we noticed the air conditioner!! It goes off and on every 15 min. You will not sleep! It sounds like an airplane taking off. When the air is on you are freezing, when it is off you sweat. Best way to describe it…a night of hot flashes! Breakfast? No breakfast or room service. It was raining and we had to walk to go get breakfast. We had a room with 2 queen beds and towels for 2. I called to get more and they never came, my husband had to go get them. There is a kitchen in the room that was really nice, unfortunately we didn’t need it for our short stay. The fitness center is amazing-it is a club that is attached. There is no pool. This is not a place for families or children. It is a nice business hotel, but you won’t sleep. We had 2 rooms and the air conditioner was exactly the same. …
Read the other negative reviews. They were accurate and we should have read them before we stayed at this property. Pros: The kitchen was well-equipped and included a dishwasher, refrigerator, flatware, dishes, glassware, etc. Great setup for a long-term stay. Cons: I never found the hotel’s parking so ended up in a public garage nearby. The room had a broken cable/telephone cover (see picture). The sliding glass door to the bathroom was dirty and the handle was loose. The vanity mirror in the bathroom wasn’t balanced or tight so it flung out towards my head when I tried to use it. The dealbreaker for me was the air conditioner. It made an alarming loud noise every time it kicked on. All night long. It was so loud that it woke me up each time it started up (I’m not an exceptionally light sleeper, it’s just startling loud). I’ve stayed at many Hiltons and this is one of the few I cannot recommend.…
We made a reservation 12 hours before arriving and the hotel was very understaffed and was not able to accommodate any of our needs. Past the 2 in our rooms no clean towels were available in the hotel (from the front desk), our toilet was jammed upon arrival and the front desk had to come up with a plunger.
Room is very large. The floor is cement which is hard on the legs. Bed is very comfortable. There is a kitchen area with plates and glasses for prolonged stays. There is a coffee maker with pods but no coffee cups. I looked in the dishwasher thinking perhaps the dishes had been cleaned and I found one coffee cup, very dirty with lipstick marks. I called the front desk three different times and it rang and rang but no one picked up the phone. There is no daily maid service so we went to the front desk to ask for some more towels (after no one answered the phone again). They said someone would be up in a few minutes. No one came. Later that night after coming back from dinner I asked the front desk woman for 2 sets of towels. She handed me one proper set and 2 bath mats! I pointed out that these were bath mats and she seemed irritated. She went somewhere to get more towels and came back with more bath mats saying that there were no more clean towels! So in conclusion the hotel is understaffed and the service is poor. I would not stay here again.…
