When Don & Gerrie Etter retired from dairy farming, they realized the cows had always had the best view in the county. They converted their old barn into a bed and breakfast, naming each of the eight guest rooms after their favorite dairy cows. Check in at the front desk in the old Milk Room, relax on the Cow Yard patio, eat a farm fresh meals prepared the way Grandma used make them, play with Alfie the farm dog or the outdoor barn cats, chase fireflies or enjoy a summer bonfire, and sleep in the old Hayloft. Each room at The Dairy Barn has it's own private bathroom and great country view. Two bedrooms are handicap accessible on the first floor where the baby calves used to sleep. All six of the Hayloft bedrooms have comfy pillowtop queen size beds. The rooms don't have televisions, but you are welcome to use the one in the common area if you have a hankering to watch Old Yeller. We still like to tinker about the farm. If you are lucky you can see Don riding around on one of his vintage Allis Chalmers tractors or help Gerrie and Alfie the farm dog gather eggs from the chicken coop. We welcome couples, families, old farmers, hunters, and small groups. With a huge farm yard and large common room on each floor, we're a great place to hold family reunions and small retreats.

We came from 5 states to celebrate an 80th birthday. We stayed the whole week and felt right at home from the moment we arrived. Don, Gerrie, and Donya were friendly and willing to accommodate our varied schedule and food storage needs. They fed us wonderful food all week - meatloaf, lasagna, chicken and biscuits, french toast, bacon, fresh fruit, cookies, pie, ... the list goes on. We had wonderful fireside chats around the fire pit in the evenings and started our days sitting on the patio in the morning sun. It was a perfect place to gather as a family to reconnect in the stillness of the Iowa countryside. The rooms were large. The beds were comfortable. The showers were just right. And despite us taking up all 8 rooms, I never heard a peep from the other occupants from within our own room. If I had one request, it would be that they get a telescope so we could examine the night sky even better. We were able to see constellations, the Milky Way, comets, and satellites with our naked eye, but would have loved looking through a telescope, too. As an added bonus, Donya co-owns a paper crafting store a mile down the road in Ionia called Backroads Plum Crazy. She stocks a large variety of papers, embellishments, inks, tools, pretty much everything you need to make cards or scrapbooks. She even hosts 2 crops a year at the Dairy Barn! I hope to make it back for the crop later this year. Oh, and if you want to know what to do in the area, just ask! We got some great tips to help us plan our day trip around Iowa and were not disappointed.

Came to the Dairy Barn to celebrate my Uncle's 80th birthday. The staff (Don, Gerrie, Donaya) were fantastic. Food was awesome. Accomodations were the best ever - everything was so clean in the room. Bonfire everynight - such a wonderful way to end the day chatting with family members. Didn't want to leave. Andrea Mills

There were some positives, but more disappointments. The beds were comfortable, bathrooms were clean. The exterior of the barn is beautiful. We were disappointed in the food. It seemed bland and colourless. We were surprised that everything, including beverages were on a help yourself basis for meals. The cleanliness was marginal in some area. The bedrooms and bathrooms were clean, but the downstairs living and dining room seemed dirty and cluttered. We did not appreciate the dog roaming in the living room and dining room. The entry way was very cluttered. The patio, although it had beautiful flowers was messy with empty pots, water buckets, and a hose was laying on the ground across the walkway.

From the friendly hosts to the delicious food, The Dairy Barn is the perfect spot to kick back and relax! My husband and I have gone in the Spring for the past three years and enjoy visiting all of the greenhouses in the area.

We enjoyed the ducks most of all bemuse of their expressive personalities. The setting was relaxing and quiet. If you choose the East side one can enjoy the sunrise. The food was excellent and plentiful.

Thank you for the review. The runner ducks are my favorites, as well. We just added a polish hen this week.
