Went for the NYE bash and it was amazing! Will do it again in 2023! Had a suite for a room, the food at Carolinas was really good the band, Bogie Monster, was very good. The staff was very friendly. Check in took about 2 minutes. Hotel location makes it very easy to get to.
Very clean room, great restaurant.Good service. Food was yummy. Hot water in shower is a plus. Location was good. Spent only one night but a great respite from the road. The pillows were not the softest. I would stay there again if we were in the area.
We were looking forward to our third stay here. However, the check- in experience was very disappointing . The lady at the check in desk was not friendly at all and certainly did not make us feel welcome . Nothing like driving all day, looking forward to one of our favorite historic hotels, and then not even greeted with a smile or a welcoming attitude . We won’t be back.
Classic majestic hotel in a great location. Very comfortable bed, Nice pool and hot tub. Great restaurant in hotel and many others near by. Easy walk to the funicular elevator that offers a great view of the city and river.
We love the town, and I would say this hotel is the best place to stay in Dubuque. It's walking distance to shops and restaurants. The bartenders are fantastic and friendly. Front staff was unimpressive. The rooms are nice, but the lobby and elevators could really use updating.
For what I paid I expect better customer service!!! Not friendly staff, lobby as I have heard was supposed to be spectacular not impressed as you use it for your marketing. I noticed parking you have a shuttle service yet as a customer you don't utilize it. I visit weekly but not at your hotel I want a hotel with a shuttle service
Stumbled upon this in a travel guide while I was looking for a place while visiting Galena IL. Wonderful room, great service and a hotel atmosphere back to a better time. There were also decent restaurants around it too which made it even better. We will be back.
I have never been compelled to file a negative review before, giving the organization the benefit of the doubt considering the times and staffing issues most businesses are facing these days, but those are not the Hotel Julien’s issues. Poor service is clearly systemic in how the organization is run. It started in the worn look of what I assume was once a grand lobby, chairs were worn, fake leather chairs were thread bare, the web site photos must be several years or decades old. The front desk staff were frumpy, perfunctory, and undertrained. They were unable to provide my request for champagne or even bottled water, suggesting I run to a liquor store. There is no coffee shop or ability to have a coffee in the lobby in the afternoon, and they suggested I call uber eats. The bar doesn’t open until 4 on Fridays. There is no room or maid service available but said they would drop towels off at your door if you called down. The kitchen was unable to bake a cake for our event and I had to bring one with me. Everything was an extra charge, including the use of a room and a piano for an hour. The dinning room was profoundly understaffed and the service for our special dinner, arranged ahead of time, was slow and impersonal, with several various staffers serving the table and not even knowing what was on the appetizer tray they were serving. All of which would not, in itself, caused me to respond negatively. However, upon check out by 9:30 am, I was charged an extra $150 plus fees for leaving after 4 nights of lodging rather than 5, and even then, a polite explanation would have gone a long way. Note, I paid full rates, plus a weekend up charge, booked directly with the hotel, not a discounted rate or through a third party. But rather, Mr. Hopfauf the general manager, was amazingly non-accommodating, matter-of-fact and argumentative, boarding on arrogant. He argued that all the other purchases we made at his hotel had no bearing on his room policy. And then explained the large chains have million-dollar advertising budgets while he has to rely on word of mouth, apparently not catching the irony in that explanation in losing my good will. If you’re looking for a well kempt, quaint, vintage, historic hotel with quality old fashioned personalized service, the Hotel Julien is not it. …
I wouldn’t have many complaints had I not paid $250+ per night. At that price point, I expect a bit more than what we received. There is no housekeeping for multi night stays. This means no trash take out, turndown, additional towels, or replenishment of coffee. This was not communicated until check in. The executive room was small and seemed tired. I understand this is a historic hotel, but the TVs, lamps, and furniture could all use some updating. All were old and obviously worn out. Remote did not work. Neither did the thermostat. There is a fridge but no microwave anywhere in the hotel. Our comforter was dirty and had boot prints. We requested a new one which arrived with a coffee stain. We did not bother trying for a third. Staff was not friendly but also not blatantly rude. Again, if this were an $80/night hotel, I’d have few complaints because I’d expect this type of room. For $250, I would not recommend it. PROS: bartender Carl was amazing.…
I wish that I had known ahead of time that housekeeping was not being offered, I would have stayed elsewhere. We stayed for three nights and it was inconvenient to go to the desk for towels, coffee and toiletries. The room did not feel overly clean at check in so it was uncomfortable to stay for three nights with no cleaning. The parking situation was not explained upon check in other than there’s two lots on property. We circled the two lots for about 20 minutes one nights to not find any parking. We briefly parked in a street spot and went to the front desk where we were told to park in the garage down the street and that we’d be reimbursed for the parking. Not the answer we expected as we were paying overnight guests of the hotel and went for dinner in dress clothes and shoes (not prepared to walk blocks back to the hotel). The staff was not overall friendly at any point in our stay. We’ve stayed here multiple times and sadly will not be returning.…
