Detailed Reviews
My daughter and I just returned from a weekend at the Julien. All employees were incredibly warm and welcoming. Our room, again, was perfect!!! VERY clean. Beds were great as were the pillows. A big shout out to a couple of your employees: The first gentleman we met was a night shift employee (don’t know his name) but he said he was employed there for 14? years that graciously filled us in on the history of the Julien - fascinating!! Next employee was the maid who immediately got an extra roll of toilet paper when we requested it. Finally (think her name was Stacie) working the reservation desk helped me out big time!! My daughter (as I did) LOVED the robes available!!! She practically lived in it!! Soooo when she was packing our car for our return trip home I called the front desk and asked for a favor. Wanted to purchase a robe as a surprise for my daughter (I did) and then I asked her if she could possibly put it in a box and with a ribbon on it. Also asked her to put a note on it that read: from Uncle Al. She did all that and with a smile!! Can’t thank her enough! PS: “Uncle Al” referenced (of course) Capone. My daughter could not have been more thrilled!! Best “mom-daughter” weekend EVER!!!!

First, let me say that the staff here is awesome. The hotel itself is a beaut and the location is smack in the epicenter of Dubuque awesomeness. We were traveling to Iowa to see a show at the casino and then to pop down to Galena. This is clearly the best hotel in the area, historic, elegant and reasonably priced. When we arrived, we stepped in some wetness in our room. We called the front desk and let them know and asked for another room. However, the hotel was sold out along with everywhere else in the area. So, the manager was kind enough to comp the room and get maintenance to fan dry the wet and disinfect the room. Plus, they comped the stay. I've had a couple of really negative experiences with hotel managers who had no idea what customer service is about. At Hotel Julien, the staff gets an A+. The areas for improvement to get a perfect 5 stars would include: better pillows (these are that thin type), actual vending machines on the floors that say "ice/vending" (there only seemed to be ice machines). And, one of the two elevators was out of service leading to a difficult exodus this morning. All of those are easy fixes. So, cheers to Hotel Julien. It's a really lovely place.

That was a Christmas trip, and we stayed there for 3 nights. The hotel is fantastic; we immediately felt at home. It was so clean and cozy! The Christmas decorations were stunning, and the staff was welcoming and calm. The room and bathroom were spacious. The mattresses were comfortable, and the sheets were ironed – 60% cotton; 40% polyester. There were spa robes in the room. We also had a fridge, coffee maker, mugs, glasses, wine glasses, and even a corkscrew in the room. Everything we needed was there! And the price for all that was incredible - $85 per night!
We only had two minor issues - dry air and pillows. Next time, I'd bring a travel humidifier with me, as the air was very dry. Also, I'd upgrade the pillows. They have four different types of pillows for different types of sleepers, I guess, but none of them suited me well.
The restaurant had a special Christmas dinner and brunch. Everything was delectable! They didn't offer a wide selection of desserts, but they served us ice cream that wasn't on the menu.
Unfortunately, we couldn't use the pool as it was always busy. Families with kids were there from early morning till late at night. The swimming pool looked much larger in the photos but was smaller than expected in reality.
In general, it's a fabulous place! Would we go there again? Absolutely!

The only reason this hotel gets 3 stars, is because the spa is nice. Otherwise, I would give it 2 stars. We checked in for a 3 night stay, and I asked at the desk if we have to request housekeeping service. They said they don't offer any housekeeping. So far this Spring and Summer, we stayed at over a dozen hotels in our travels, and this is the only one that's still milking the Covid thing. One other hotel said they will make up and clean the room only once on a 3 day stay. These greedy hotels don't give a discount for not providing this service, but instead raise their prices. We went in the lounge Tuesday night, and the bartender asked if we were staying at the hotel. I said yes. They asked if they gave me a 2 for 1 drink coupon, when I checked in. I said no. She was nice enough to give us a 2 for 1 without the coupon which they the desk clerk never gave us, or told us about. I booked a whirlpool suite. Rooms were o.k. A mini fridge but no microwave. When you stay on the 7th floor, it's a pain in the rear to have to go down to the desk to get clean towels, or more coffee, etc. Parking was free, but is first come first serve for limited spaces, so if they are booked up, good luck on finding free parking Until they start cleaning rooms, I don't recommend this hotel.

I wouldn’t have many complaints had I not paid $250+ per night. At that price point, I expect a bit more than what we received. There is no housekeeping for multi night stays. This means no trash take out, turndown, additional towels, or replenishment of coffee. This was not communicated until check in. The executive room was small and seemed tired. I understand this is a historic hotel, but the TVs, lamps, and furniture could all use some updating. All were old and obviously worn out. Remote did not work. Neither did the thermostat. There is a fridge but no microwave anywhere in the hotel. Our comforter was dirty and had boot prints. We requested a new one which arrived with a coffee stain. We did not bother trying for a third. Staff was not friendly but also not blatantly rude. Again, if this were an $80/night hotel, I’d have few complaints because I’d expect this type of room. For $250, I would not recommend it.
PROS: bartender Carl was amazing.

I wish that I had known ahead of time that housekeeping was not being offered, I would have stayed elsewhere. We stayed for three nights and it was inconvenient to go to the desk for towels, coffee and toiletries. The room did not feel overly clean at check in so it was uncomfortable to stay for three nights with no cleaning. The parking situation was not explained upon check in other than there’s two lots on property. We circled the two lots for about 20 minutes one nights to not find any parking. We briefly parked in a street spot and went to the front desk where we were told to park in the garage down the street and that we’d be reimbursed for the parking. Not the answer we expected as we were paying overnight guests of the hotel and went for dinner in dress clothes and shoes (not prepared to walk blocks back to the hotel). The staff was not overall friendly at any point in our stay. We’ve stayed here multiple times and sadly will not be returning.

Monday spa day figured it won’t be busy AND IT Was NOT! We had spa appointments at 3:30 would have been really nice to check in early to be able to leave our bags and enjoy the spa. They are running on a skeleton crew so NO MORE CUSTOMER SERVICE they would rather be afraid than to offer it. The receptionist was very nice so I don’t blame her I blame the management. Stop using Covid as an excuse for the lack of customer service when some people are trying to help keep business alive.
We come a couple times a year as we like the historical hotel but think those days wil l be in the past. The restaurant is not up to par and they close the bar at 2:00 so we had to sit in our car for an hour. Ruined my visit.

Loved almost everything about this Hotel except for the size of the room we were given (seemed to be smaller than others we viewed). The view from the 7th floor was beautiful overlooking the Bridge in which we could walk over to view the whole city. We enjoyed the Keurig coffee maker and Organic teas. Dimming lights were a plus to set any ambience you may be seeking. Enjoyed sampling the Aveda Rosemary Mint shampoo and conditioner. The room had nice cozy robes to enjoy. There is a nice pool and hot tub. Real nice workout room. We didn’t get the opportunity to use the spa for any of the wonderful massages or treatments but we will be back for sure. 😃

I took my son here as part of a larger road trip for MEA. We enjoyed the location as it was close to several areas we were looking forward to explore. The hotel had large rooms and wide hallways. The area was walkable to nearby restaurants. Parking was free across the street (but tight spaces). We enjoyed looking at the murals on the buildings surrounding the hotel.

I am very disappointed I paid $344 for a one night stay. The room has a very unclean smell, pool looks rundown, we have 3 people in the room and they only leave us 1 small bottle of shampoo conditioner and body wash. Oh and one small bar of soap. I did call down to the front desk and asked for more items and waited an hour and a half and had to call again. The hotel is not up to par for what you pay

Everyone who stays at the hotel can use their pool.
Parking is off the street. There is a large parking lot/area behind the hotel (uncovered) which provided easy access to the hotel and very convenient access to major highways and streets.
