Business must be great. I just stopped at Mandolin to look into staying multiple weekends and was treated to a little of the rudeness of the owner. So happy there are so many beautiful other options in Dubuque. The cats and the liberal nonsense wouldn't have been a good fit for us anyway. Based on previous customers comments.

This woman didn’t have a reservation and has never stayed here. She rang the doorbell just as I was taking a phone call telling me of the death of a dear friend. I am very sorry that she interpreted my grief as rudeness. I told her that I was ‘in the midst of something’ and couldn’t give her a tour as I had guests. Again - This was not a guest and I am very sorry for the timing of this unexpected walk in.

We stayed with a group and had a wonderful time chatting in the common areas when we were not out and about town. As a place to rest and relax it more than served its purpose. The house is very interesting and fun to tour, but it must be said that it could use a thorough cleaning and attention to some tired details. The owner enjoys a sit down chat at an extended breakfast, so if that is your kind of thing....

I was greeted warmly on arrival, with a glass of wine and a long conversation with the innkeeper about the house and enjoyable things to do in Dubuque. Her recommendations were spot-on, and I actually didn't move my car until I checked out two days later--a real plus to have restaurants and attractions within walking distance. I chose the Solarium room with private bath and balcony, but I peeked into all the rooms and will find it difficult to choose which one I want for my next stay. The room was clean and comfortable, the breakfasts delicious, and I'll hope to visit again. Incidentally, there is a ramp to a side door, and an accessible room with wheel-in shower on the first floor, so mobility-challenged travelers could stay here (often not possible in older mansions).

Our stay here started out rather unpleasantly with the owner not remembering we were to arrive early and being unkind to us even though she was there to help another person staying who was to be there before noon. If you are allergic to cats, reconsider as the cats have free roam on the home and all the furniture. I was disappointed in the breakfasts as they were spicy and incomplete with a vegan person staying there, she served a salad (the other entree and fresh fruit was good but spicy). This facility is also up for sale and not sure the owner's heart is into continuing. The building is at the corner of a busy stop light street and on the weekends the college kids coming back from the bars are rather noisy at 2 AM. We probably won't be back for a visit but if we were, doubt we would stay here again.
