Don’t walk away from this property....RUN! First of all they don’t mention anywhere on the hotels website or Choice hotels website, that they’re under MAJOR renovation. The place looks like a bomb went off in it. It’s dirty and smelly from all the construction. Secondly the back door where your supposed to use a room key to gain entry is brocken wide open so anyone can walk in. The front desk tells you to park your car in the back where it’s poorly lit and dangerous. Stay away

Hotel is under renovation, but there was no mention of the renovation when making the reservation or checking in. You can't tell from the front of the building. Parking was obstructed by construction containers and debris. There were workers throwing furniture and demolition debris out of a third floor window until late in the evening, creating a lot of very loud and disturbing noise. Of course, there was no rate reduction. Old dressers lined the hallway, which I'm sure was a fire hazard. A sign was posted in the same hallway door not to enter because of construction. It could be a possible exit in an emergency. I wonder what the fire department would think about that. We were awakened at 1 am, 3 am and 4 am by people talking outside our room. I'm almost certain they were employees. It sounded like they were arguing. Why would they do that? When I asked for more coffee packets, because one that was left in our room was damaged, the desk employee seemed like she didn't want to give me any. The refrigerator in our room stopped working during our stay (we didn't know) and we had to throw away a bunch of food. When we told the front desk employee, she laughed.

I called early in 2018 to set aside a block of rooms that they recorded as a reservation. Out of a block of seven, three rooms were filled by people in our party. A block of rooms is supposed to expire. The wanted to charge me for all SEVEN "unfilled" "reservations." The young man who took my request earlier in the year was inadequately trained or trained in deceit. I got the charge for all seven rooms on my credit card, disputed that and then lost because they said no one showed up (I had documentation showing otherwise) and they ended up charging me a three-room penalty "as per their policy." Why then did they originally charge me the seven rooms? Obviously this doesn't add up. And when I repeatedly attempted to talk to the manager, he didn't return a single message I left. If you have people coming into town, avoid this hotel at all costs!

Instead of booking a room ahead of time, since we were uncertain where we’d end our road trip for the 1st day of our return home, we booked off TripAdvisor just after arriving in Des Moines. When we walked into the hotel to check in, the lobby was not clean & if we hadn’t already reserved a room, I’d have turned around & walked right back out. The building is old (& looks it), the hallways & stairways looked bad & smelled worse, & the room we ended up in smelled faintly of pee. The fitted sheet looked liked they’d used a full or double sheet & tried to get it to fit the queen bed (in other words, it didn’t fit!). The blanket & topper were a poor excuse for covers (very light-weight & flimsy) & my husband froze all night, despite turning the A/C off. The floor hadn’t been vacuumed (so we never took our shoes or socks off while walking around the room) and the tub didn’t look clean either (so we didn’t shower there). Breakfast was stale pastries & cereal & waffle batter that made horrid waffles. Needless to say, we’ll never stay there again & will certainly never recommend it to anyone else!
