I can't express how wonderful our stay was at the Butler House on Grand. Folks this is so much better than going to a hotel. First of all the house itself is amazing with all it's detail. It's profound the amount of detail they put into houses back in the day that is missing today. I loved the decoration which was a mix of antique as well as local shops. It is in an easy to find location, with plenty of parking that is very close to your nearest entrance. We stayed in The Polk Room which had every convenience you might want. A luxurious king sized bed with the softest of linens afforded us a wonderful restful sleep. The spa/tub is one of those sort of things that you think...I want one of these at home too! We had a blast down in the basement playing in the game room. Sheryl and Jeremiah were wonderful hosts as well. They took every opportunity to make us feel welcome and comfortable during our two day stay. Ditch the hotels folks and enjoy the grandeur of Butler House on Grand!!!

We stayed at this house for a weekend. It is so beautiful and comfortable. It is centrally locates to many fun activities in Des Moines area. The house is for sale and I can only hope that it remains a BNB. If it does, it will become a routine place to visit.

Nice place to stay! Bed, but no breakfast - now an Airbnb. Super cute house!! Very nicely decorated. Nice neighborhood. Conveniently located. Quiet and charming. Would be great for a girl’s weekend or romantic get away. Recommend Brueggers Bagels and Jesse Embers steak house both nearby!

From all the reviews, both online and through people I know, this place seemed wonderful. However, it recently became an AirBnB only and while the place was neat, the overall experience was disappointing. This place is definitely still in transition from being a B and B proper to an AirBnB and as such, it's a bit awkward to stay in. I believe they may only be renting out the full house now, but during my stay, it was room-by-room. The rooms themselves are quirky, but charming, though they could definitely use a bit of refreshing, especially in the bathrooms which seemed a bit dingy. Despite being an AirBnB now, the rooms were serviced every day. By that, I mean that they bed was made. It seemed like the towels were also being changed daily, but there were definitely a couple days where it seems that they had just refolded my used washcloth and towel instead of replacing them. There were cups in the room, and sometimes they would be taken out of the room if they were dirty, but not cleaned and returned. There was no do not disturb sign and I would have liked that as an option, especially since it didn't seem that the cleaning was extensive and there was no place in the room to lock any sensitive belongings. They advertise use of the kitchens, but then it seemed like there were actually limits on what in the kitchen could be used (i.e. "Don't use any mugs in that cabinet."). One morning, the owner was cooking breakfast for other guests (he does not live onsite and as it is no longer a regular B and B, this was not a service that was provided anymore), and it was offered only as an afterthought to the other guests. Also, to enter or exit the building, you can only use the backdoor for some reason, and the lock is keyed on both side, which seems like it would be a safety issue if there was a fire. Overall, it was a very weird experience and not in a good way. I would not recommend staying in this place unless you are renting the entire place out, which is advertised on AirBnB for $1000 (the place is huge, but that still seems excessively high to me given that it's in Des Moines). The location is convenient to the Art Center, Ashworth Pool, and the parks those two facilities are located in, but not really walking-convenient to anything else. It's a shame that when the owner decided he could not operate it anymore that he sell it as a B and B, or at least find someone to manage it onsite, to continue operating that way because it seems like it would have been lovely.

Wonderful location for a 2 day trip in to visit the capitol, botanical gardens and the art museum- only minutes away. Friendly, attentive hosts that made us feel very welcome and served a delicious breakfast and accommodated our dietary needs. Enjoyed having a refrigerator near our room stocked with cold drinks and a microwave with popcorn for snacking. They gave us excellent suggestions for local restaurants and recommended a visit to the very nearby Salisbury House-which is very interesting. We would definitely return, given the opportunity,

Butler B&B is located in a magnificent house built in 1921. Larger than many B&Bs in which we have stayed, it features seven rooms, most (all?) of which must be reached by stairs. The ambiance is lovely, and the breakfast we had was excellent. The dining room was set with both a common table and a couple of individual couples' tables; when we were there, two people who had come down before us occupied the former, and we took the latter, so there was less conversation among guests than in some places. The living room serves as a common room; it is well appointed in both period and contemporary terms--antique furniture and flat-screen TV. There is a refrigerator with various drinks on the second floor. The WiFi works well. Butler House is located just across Grand Avenue from the Des Moines Art Center (which, unhappily but unsurprisingly, is closed on Mondays, so we did not visit). You do have to be alert to find it, however, because there is no obvious sign on Grand Avenue. Coming from the east, we passed it, even though we had the street number. Perched on a rise, the house faces north, so you don't enter from the street. To the west is a driveway that the B&B shares with an adjacent apartment building. Drive past the apartment and park in one of the House's slots. We stayed in the Cook's Corner room. It is very brightly painted, something like a child's room. It faces north, overlooking the lot. We would stay there again, but one should note the bathroom, which is extremely cramped and awkwardly laid out: the radiator and sink flank the toilet, which, consequently, is hard to rich, and the shower is small. This room would not be a good choice for larger people. The staff is very attentive. Overall, Butler House is an elegant and comfortable retreat.

2nd visit to this B&B and another great experience. Lots of little kids that the owners handled with patience (when we were really loud). Breakfast was always excellent. Recommend - great place to stay, great location, great owners.

Thank you for your positive post. We have been blessed to be open for almost 18 years and over these years, we have gotten to know many of our guests as they stay with us often. We have enjoyed getting to know your family and watching you all as you start your own families. The children were wonderful. We hope there will be a time soon when you all find your way into our B&B again. Enjoy your summer. Clark

We arrived on a Friday night to visit our daughter who lives in Des Moines. Preparing for a smooth arrival I always re-read other reviews and even go so far as to view the surroundings on Google maps street views so I know where I'm at when I get there. The Butler House was easy to find and once we arrived the home and surroundings were very nice with the home being set up on the hill. Upon entering the home, it is very well appointed and decorated. At 6100 square feet, there is room to roam. We had chosen the Greenwood room and it was spacious, comfortable. The entire home is almost as it was in 1923 when it was built. Many of the fixtures are from that same time but in excellent working condition. The breakfast was excellent and the stay was a very interesting and relaxing. We will most certainly return.

Thank you for you kind remarks. We have been open for 17 years now! While our home was built in 1923 we do try to keep as much of the original fixtures as we can. We certainly do hope you will return again. Thank you too, for staying with us.

I enjoyed the charm of the house, our room was on the top floor and it was very quiet despite the busy road nearby. Lauren was a wonderful hostess offering us suggestions for dinner and activities. Check in was seamless with my only complaint being the house itself was hard to see from the road and the sign was too small. We drove past it. The breakfast was deliciously homemade.

Beautiful house, gorgeous furnishings, excellent location, especially for runners or bikers, with easy access to the river trails, wonderful food, and best of all, the fabulous company of hosts, Clark & Lauren. Whenever we go back to Des Moines, we'll stay at Butler House!
