I stayed here the other night on my way to Indiana. I wouldn’t call the place a dump, but I wouldn’t call it a nice place, either. The price was affordable, yes. Check-in was easy, but the desk staff weren’t terribly welcoming. “What’s your name, place your card here, sign here, stairs are over there, breakfast at 6/coffee is 24 hours.” Nothing terrible, but also very stand-offish. The room was not great. The beds are in serious need of updating, as in you sleep on a noticeable angle because the mattress has worn down so much from where everyone else has slept. The ironing board was downright dirty: I used a towel I had packed to act as a buffer. The A/C worked but was loud. The bathroom was fine but the shower had lots of cracks in the ceiling. To top it all off, on my way out (I had to leave very early in the morning), I went to turn my keys in and the staff person was flat-out asleep at the desk. They looked very comfortable so I decided to just leave them alone, but c’mon…not a good look. So, yeah, it’s not horrible. However, it could be better. It’s in a good location (outside of IC but really close, yet also away from the craziness that is Coral Ridge Ave, but also very close to the interstate) and you have Old Chicago literally right there. The price is pretty good. It’s just a shame that so many things have been allowed to go bad.

We’ve never written a poor review for a hotel before. Until now, our stays have offered enough amenities and kind customer service to make up for any disappointments. And we’re sensitive to the stresses and risks hotel workers face as they work through a global pandemic. But even with all this considered, we feel compelled to note that our stay at Heartland Inn was the worst we’ve experienced in fourteen years together. Here are the pros and cons (listing cons first): Cons (most of which can be filed under poor customer service with the night staff at the hotel desk): - When we arrived in the evening on 8/13, the deskperson ignored us at first. We had to get her attention even though she was sitting right in front of us. She was abrupt and expressionless. Then she gave us the wrong room (we booked a room with a hot tub and didn’t receive that). When we returned to the desk to fix the mistake, she didn’t apologize or in any way acknowledge she made an error. She made a show of how irritated she was dealing with us. She did give us a key to a new room with a hot tub, for which we were thankful, but we felt unwelcome at the hotel. - There were no hangers in the closet. We were attending a wedding the following day and needed to hang a blazer, a dress shirt, and a dress and a few other articles of clothing. We figured this would be no problem. We called the desk and requested about five or six hangers. The deskperson, not the same one as before, said there were no more hangers (!!!) in the hotel. We told her that we just had this poor experience with the last deskperson about getting the wrong room and we just had a long day of travel and just wanted this simple basic thing. She said she’d try to find us hangers. About twenty minutes later, she showed up to our room with about twenty hangers without hooks on their tops, so they wouldn’t work in our closet, which required standard hangers. She said she’d try to look for normal hangers. - Hungry from our long trip, we left to grab some food. Before doing this, we stopped at the desk to inform the second deskperson that we were leaving and someone could just place the hangers in our room if they found them while we’re out. She said she was too busy with other things. We understand that people get busy, customer service can be stressful, and finding hangers might slip on a list of immediate priorities, but we didn’t appreciate her attitude about it, like we were hassling her over this basic accommodation. Anyway, after we ate at a nearby establishment, we bought our own hangers at a Walgreens (weren’t for sale exactly, but the counterperson enjoyed our absurd goofy tale and let us purchase a few stray hangers from a rack). Good thing we did that: there were no hangers in the room when we returned. - On the second night, our room key cards didn’t work. When we mentioned this to a night deskperson (the third), she said it was because we kept the cards too close to a chip credit card or too close to our phones. At no point were we warned that this could happen. She fixed the problem but she was a bit mean about it and didn’t apologize. We’ve never encountered this key card problem at any other hotel. - There was hardly any room in the standing shower for soap or shampoo. - There were no towel racks. - The hair dryer didn’t work. - There were only three pillows on the king sized bed (should be at least four). - There were barely any sheet coverings, just one sheet and a thin comforter. - The room was gloomy with poor lighting. Pros: - Our checkout manager on Sunday morning, Antonio, was courteous and listened to all our grievances on our final day. He said he’d be upset too if he encountered this kind of service (and said he saw a bunch of normal hangers in the back room). It almost felt therapeutic to talk with him. He was thoughtful and extremely competent. - The deskperson who brought us the useless hangers was friendly when she came to our room. She told us about a dinner option nearby and we appreciated that. - Our room was clean (fresh sheets) and when I asked housekeeping staff for towels, they gave them to us and were cordial. - We enjoyed the hot tub. - The iron worked well. It’s important to reiterate that most of the problems we experienced would have been tolerable if not for the rudeness. That was the worst of it: the sense that we were unreasonable when we addressed these basic issues with the night staff at the hotel desk. We were hoping for nice place to relax after attending our niece’s wedding. Instead we ended up with a lot of meaningless stress.

Buyer Beware. This hotel is not newly renovated as advertised! The photos are photo shopped. This place is a dump. I am highly disappointed. When I called the front desk about the renovated rooms she said they have not started the renovations yet….. The carpet is old from the 80’s look like and it smells like the room was formerly a smoking room, the furniture is old and its just looks bad. We choose yo stay here because its close to hospital. I don’t want to lay in bed. By the way, someone from the staff just walked into my room with her key. She did not knock on the door. So now I feel unsafe if the workers can just use their key yo walk into my room. I plan to report this place to the BBB! I am going show the real pictures. Our veterans deserve to stay somewhere better not this dump. I will also inform the VA know.

Heartland Inn was a great place to stay while having someone at UI Hospitals and Clinics. It was a short 6 minute drive to the hospital and there was a hospital discount. We did not use it as we had a late night hospital visit, but there is also a free shuttle to the hospital during the day. The rooms were clean, staff were very friendly, and the breakfast was delicious! They had a couple hot food options as well as many bread and cold food items. I walked in on a Friday night and was able to get a room right away for cheaper than prices listed online. I would definitely stay here again!

I made a reservation for one night ten days before my stay. When I arrived to check in after giving my name and confirmation number I was told by Sam at the front desk that there motel was full and had no room for me. I received no cancellation by email or phone call before I arrived. They did not try to accommodate me by calling another hotel to find me a room. Then I was told I need to call and cancel so I wouldn't be charged for what they cancelled me. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone with that kind of service.

Arrived a little early and were told that our room would be ready in 30 minutes. So we waited in the lobby until it was done. The bad part, we watched the housekeeper go through the lobby and no one bothered to mention that our room was ready. When we got into the room, the air was off and the room was overly warm and stuffy. Clearly no one had mentioned we had been waiting! The bad part was that the Red Cross had also set up in the lobby instead of using the meeting room and couldn't care less about social distancing, masks, or unsafe food handling. They had no problem taking cookies off of the tray without proper precautions being used. It wouldn't have taken anything to post a sign directing the Red Cross had people to go to the meeting room to handle their business instead of doing so directly in the lobby.

As you may know, our area of the state was involved in a derecho, which impacted many, many people. The Red Cross is an amazing entity . While the need in our area did overwhelm them for a moment, they did get their volunteers organized and much more cognizant of masks, etc. With folks with no electricity or homes for that matter, it was just such a stressful time for everyone involved. We do our best to get folks checked in early. Usually, we are able to get guests checked in pretty quickly. With special requests, it does mean that other guests have to vacate the room before we can clean it. We scramble as quickly as we can. We appreciate your loyalty as our frequent guest. Really makes it look suspect when the shuttle rear bumper is smashed considerably. It's the first thing you notice as you go to enter the hotel. Room was clean. The chicken Alfredo for supper was really bland. I couldn't taste any seasoning at all.

We were booked into the Heartland Inn by staff at UIHC. The location was perfect to get to UIHC, and the cleanliness was excellent. We needed to make this medical trip during COVID-19 concerns. The cleanliness was a great relief with COVID-19 in mind. Additionally, the staff was enormously helpful, and they served breakfast and supper. The meals were modest, but greatly appreciated in that there was no need to find a place to get food. The rate was quite modest. If we need to return to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, this is where we will go.
