Picked this B&B based on the reviews - the 5 star rating is right on target! A quiet & peaceful location in Van Buren County, IA. Jan & Herb spent their precious time & money transforming a historic structure into a B&B that sets the highest standards! The term "lovingly restored" was used in a previous review, and is right on target. Jan & Herb were very cordial, eager to highlight places to visit in the area, and made honest recommendations for food & entertainment based on our personal preferences. The room was decorated with grace & great taste; and the large bathroom had modern fixtures that functioned flawlessly. If I didn't know better -- it appeared we were the 1st to stay because everything was exceptionally clean! Breakfast was a treat - a beautiful table setting in charming dining room. The meal was tasty, healthy, included a variety of items, and provided appropriate sized portions. Another plus, Herb can provide the fascinating history of the residence & the surrounding area. A real treat for the history buff. I will echo recommendations to some of the same places others have highlighted: Dutchman's Store in Cantril; 1st Street Grill and Misty's Malt Shop both in Keosauqua. A 5 star gem in the Villages of Van Buren County!

I & a friend booked the HANCOCK ROOM for a 2-night stay over the Labor Day weekend. We were the only guests that weekend. I read the 16 Trip Advisor reviews prior to booking that weekend. Gleaning a wealth of information from everyone's comments, I knew that we would have an overall---exemplary experience!!! I have had a "women's travel club" since 1982. I was "very familiar" to the VILLAGES OF VAN BUREN COUNTY!!! I have been researching, booking & executing adventures---many revolving around staying, eating &/or visiting a variety of B&B's---mostly in Iowa. This is the OLDEST B&B that I have visited---LOVINGLY RESTORED by Jan & Herb Shafer!! I'm not sure I can add anything new---the 16 reviews prior to our visit tell the COMPLETE STORY!!!! Jan was cordial, helpful & efficient during the several phone calls that I made to them, prior to our visit. My friend had "many dietary restrictions", which Jan accommodated beautifully. The plentiful breakfasts, served in the charming dining room, LOOKED STUNNING, as well as, tasting delicious!!! I always love when the "guest quarters" are separate from the owner's living space. It induces "instant relaxation"!!! The HANCOCK ROOM & its private, well-stocked bathroom---were tastefully decorated, spacious & very clean!! And, of course, the location was so peaceful & quiet!!!! And, we thoroughly enjoyed on the morning of our final day, Herb giving us a "history lesson" about the structure that is now their home, as well as, the area. When you are in the area, ALWAYS STOP at---the MILTON CREAMERY, in Milton.....the DUTCHMAN'S STORE, in Cantril---an Amish store that takes up 1/2 of a city block.....BONAPARTE RETREAT, in Bonaparte---homemade food prepared in a restored Grist Mill.....buy some of ADDIE MAY'S FUDGE---now housed in the GREEF GENERAL STORE, in Bentonsport.....visit the HISTORIC LEWELLING HOUSE, in Salem---it was an active part of Iowa's Underground Railroad.....& don't forget to indulge in an ice cream cone that is several inches high (only $2.00) from MISTY'S MALT SHOP, in Keosauqua---while you sit in the park & watch the Des Moines River "flow-by"!!! And, don't miss a drive through one of Iowa's most beautiful state parks---LACEY-KEOSAUQUA STATE PARK. There are tons of walking trails in the park, as well as, a great campground & LAKE SUGEMA is right next to it. Every time I visit, I see & do something new. Step back in time, relax & enjoy what the area has to offer!!!! The Bentonsport Village B&B is now another 5-star location within the VILLAGES OF VAN BUREN COUNTY!!!! Our thanks, Jan & Ruth

The Bentonsport B&B is the perfect place to relax and unwind. From the moment the Innkeepers, Jan and Herb, greet you at the door you feel as if you've just come home. The grounds are lovely, the Inn has been restored with attention to historically accurate details, the bathrooms are modern, the guest rooms are cozy, everything is immaculately clean, and the breakfast was positively delicious. This B&B is a true gem!

We had the greatest time staying at Bentonsport B&B! Herb was such a fantastic host; from my first call to make the reservation he was incredibly helpful - providing detailed directions and tips for our drive down from Des Moines. Not only was breakfast delicious every morning, we loved chatting with Herb about the history of the house, their journey in remodeling, and his love for Bentonsport and southwest Iowa. We spent 3 days/2 nights exploring the area and Bentonsport B&B was the perfect jumping off point. We visited slightly 'out of season' but Herb went out of his way to visit places he thought we might find interesting to see if they'd be open while we were there! We can't wait to visit the area again and already know where we'll be staying!
