The Van Buren Hotel At Shipshewana is celebrated for its cleanliness and cozy rooms, with numerous guests commending the well-maintained environment. While the hotel's service receives mixed reviews, with some visitors praising the staff's friendliness and others noting inconsistency, amenities such as a good breakfast and pet-friendly policies are well-liked. However, there is a notable call for updates throughout the hotel, including room renovations and improved pillows. Despite its tranquil atmosphere, some guests question the value, pointing out the high prices relative to the offerings.

Like a deer suddenly crossing in front of your car, it is something that you are not looking for but could not help but notice. When I recently entered the Van Buren Hotel in Shipshewana, Indiana for the first time I was not looking for anything other than the expected typical, cordial and courteous hotel service. When I met Summer, who signed me in, I got the feeling that I was not a typical guest at the hotel. I discerned that her speech and mannerisms were not the usual mechanically rehearsed spiel but carried a natural flow of engagement as she took my information, gave me my room key with specific directions, and explained the amenities of the hotel.

After I settled in, I returned to the front desk in need of an iron and assistance connecting my computer to the hotel's wi-fi. Hanan, who was in the inner office, heard my concern then graciously and instantly located an iron while Summer promptly began to troubleshoot the wi-fi problem. She tried in vain a few different ways but was unsuccessful, even with Hanan's help. Summer finally tried the hotspot on her own smartphone which finally worked then my computer was able to connect to the hotel's internet. The natural interaction between these two ladies working together, their unselfishness, attentiveness to me, jovialness, plus their engagement with me made me feel important, more like their next of kin. The next day I happened to see both ladies who greeted and treated me like an old friend. At another time later in the day I witnessed Summer and Hanan extending the same warm cordial service to others at the front desk. All I can say was I know how these patrons feel.

The room was clean, quiet and the coffee hot. My entire stay was comfortable yet made more pleasant because of how I was made to feel by Ms. Summer and Ms. Hanan. I was not just another guest in the place where they happen to work but was honored with respect and warm hospitality. A heartfelt gratitude and a most sincere thank you to these two fine associates!

We recently stayed for 3 nights at the Van Buren Hotel; this was our 4th year in a row. From check in to check out, everything was handled by a friendly, ready to please staff. Clean room, comfortable beds, quiet atmosphere. Because of the restrictions in place due to Covid, we knew our room would not be cleaned unless requested so we took our own larger trash bags (due to carry out meals) which were then picked up readily by a staff member. The location is what first drew us to the hotel, just north of town, no distractions; even outdoor seating to just relax and eat a meal or do buggy-watching. Our only glitch is the TV reception; the cable goes in and out on every channel but who needs TV!
We'll be returning next year! By the way, the longer you stay, the more discount of a price.

I made the mistake of overlooking the autofill date while setting up my reservation. When I checked in at the front desk, a wonderful employee named Summer, informed me that my reservation was actually 4 nights out on the calendar. I assumed that the mistake was made by the third party and asked what could be done. Summer was professional, courteous, and competent. Within moments she had my room and instructions regarding the outstanding reservation. I am human and riddled with human problems like prioritizing a tedious task over eating. So after a refreshing shower (excellent water pressure and shower head in rm 135) I left for dinner and had completely forgotten about my obligation to cancel the outstanding reservation. The following morning I attempted to checkout and was shocked to learn that the hotel required payment directly. The confusion was created by my mistake. Once the manager on staff and I discussed the sequence of my experience I realized I had forgotten Summer's instruction to cancel the outstanding reservation. I immediately logged in and cancelled the reservation without penalty and placed payment directly with Summer. I also want to acknowledge that this employee (Summer) worked a night shift followed by a morning shift and never once failed to uphold the principles of hospitality even when I showed signs of frustration. I recommend the General manager seriously consider that employee as a candidate when opportunities for advancement arise. Kudos to the staff as well my stay was perfect and everything was clean, working, and accessible. I was also happy with your guest laundry facility. Overall the best stay I've had this year, and that's 1 out of 180 folks!

We have stayed at this hotel many times over the years and were greatly disappointed with our "LAST" stay at this hotel. We arrived a little after the check in time of 4 pm and were greeted with no one working the front desk for about 15 minutes.. Other people were also waiting. Finally a young man appeared and informed us they were still cleaning rooms and he was not sure when they would be ready. Returned an hour later and a lady and her daughter were checking people in. Very unprofessional on the older lady's part when she got into a heated discussion with a tour bus person. Our room was clean but we did spray it down with Lysol - no kleenix and when I asked the young man for a box he stated that their order did not come in yet! Did not even partake in the breakfast the next morning - the area was a MESS! It is a shame that this once nice and beautiful hotel has gone downhill. They have lost us as customers.

This was our go to hotel when staying in Shipshewana. We started staying here when it was Country Inn and suites. The outside was kept very pretty. It was always clean, quiet and comfortable. It's been 3 years since we stayed here. As we pulled into the parking lot you could see that this place was not under the same care as it was 3 years ago. The landscaping was not being maintained as before. There were over grown bushes and weeds in the flower beds. Rocks from the flower beds were scattered heavily on the edges of the sidewalk of the back entrance along with cigarette butts. The garbage can was overflowing with garbage. The stairs on the back entrance needed to be vacuumed too. We arrived around 6pm. There were very few guests staying Sunday night. Our room did not smell fresh. There was stuff on the floor that should have been vacuumed up. The windows were dirty. The pillows smelled of body oder and there were stains on some of the pillow cases. There was some brown liquid on the night stand under the phone. The floor of the tub looked dirty and 80% of our towels and washcloths we're stained and or dingey. We did not mind that we had to empty our trash and get fresh towels when needed. It was the lack of cleanliness and care. When reservations were made my husband was given the opportunity to order chocolate strawberries and he did. He inquired about his order upon checking in, (Sun.) He was told that the business they get them from was closed and the manager would be picking them up the next morning, (Mon .) We checked on the order again Monday night after still not receiving them. The front desk said they would message their manager about this. We decided to cancel our order at this point. Just looking around the place when coming and going to the building the lack of care is noticable. Even the elevator needed to be vacuumed.

Everything at this place is a Health Code violation. Unassuming from the outside what was once a nice building, then walk up and find the hotel staff barefoot and smoking in the outdoor seating. Walk inside and see dirty couches where the staff also lounge, still shoeless, dirty carpets and stairs hadn't been vacuumed for some time. Our jacuzzi suite at a premium price was filthy, we typically do a quick wipe down of surfaces but we literally spent over an hour and a full pack of sanitizing wipes, including dried insect carcass on several surfaces, and long black hairs in whirlpool tub. We took at look at breakfast area that evening and found dried waffle batter all over the counter and excess cooked overflow from waffle iron piled up on either side.
I woke up to find black spots on my face and after noticing that they were also on the corner of the bed and nightstand I realized the air conditioner obviously had not been maintained and peppered me and the room with what looked like a mix of grime, insect carcass, and oil. Breakfast we decided to look if the previous night observations had been cleaned, they had not. Also had outdated yogurt and was restocked by maintenance man/manager barefoot in swim trunks and a hoodie.
Great set up for a horror movie, but not a relaxing safe clean place to stay. Sep. 2021

This place was very disappointing for starters my room had no heat at all in the middle of winter 😡😐 then the pool was cold and not very clean had stuff floating in it and there was no hot tub also in the pool room the light fixture was hanging out and did not look up to code . Breakfast was ok but was not kept full like it is at other places I have been too. There were kids just doing whatever they wanted in the lobby and the pool. My beds were stained and the chair in my room had a stain on it 😒 was just very sad and I payed to much to not have heat in my room with my 2 year old. Also they did nothing to compensate for not having heat all night no discount no oh iam sorry all she said was oh ok i will let him know 😒The lady at the front desk did ok but was not very friendly for being a hotel front desk clerk. Will not be staying here again will go to other places in shipshewana to stay so disappointing and frustrating was just trying to have a nice family vacation.

If I could give a negative star rating for this hotel, I would. This place was our worst nightmare as I am a disabled adult with severe mobility issues. Walking distances is out of the question for me. The use of a telephone is essential. The front desk person placed us furthest from an entrance and furthest from the front desk despite our request over the phone nearly a week before referring to my specific disability. She argued with us saying we didn’t mention a disability and stated I requested a room on the highest floor. It made no sense but she didn’t care. That’s what she was sticking to. When we got to the room, the room was not clean. We called the front desk to let her know. After several call attempts, she answered and told us there was nothing she could do because it was now 8pm. She offered to let us checkout and go elsewhere but there was nowhere available in the area. When we opened the bed, there were dead bugs in the bed. There were spiders in the bathroom. We tried calling the front desk but no one answered our calls the rest of the evening. We had to take the bedding off, shake it out and make the bed. The next morning, no one cared about how our stay went. The front desk person said someone would be in touch with us later in the day. That didn’t happen. I took pictures and a video and forwarded it to the address on their website with no response. I’ve never, in all my years of travel, had such a terrible experience. We are not bad people. We are not unreasonable but we have expectations that do not include bugs in our bed. We expect to be treated with respect when we give respect. This was our worst trip we’ve ever experienced in all of our worldwide travel. Shame on the management at Van Buren Hotel. We will never forget this place. Please beware!!!

Ms. Hawkins, Unfortunately, we can only accommodate a guest predicated on the information they give us—your reservation was booked on the 22nd of September for arrival on the 26th of September. When the reservation was booked, we have notes reflecting that the guest (assuming you) would like the highest floor possible. Nowhere on the reservation does it mention anything about being handicapped or requesting an accessible room. All of our accessible rooms are on the 1st floor, so we certainly were not informed nor expected a guest to arrive with a handicap with a high floor requested. To say that our Guest Service Representative "didn't care" is a bit disingenuous as the only thing we have to go on is the reservation on the computer. I can assure you that we care for all our guests, and our goal is to give everyone an exceptional experience. Further, when the reservation was made, a confirmation was sent the same day to your email address xxxxxxxxxx19@gmail.com that described a room type as well as a request to be placed on a high floor "if possible." Perhaps you didn't get a chance to look at the confirmation. Still, according to our records, before your arrival on the 26th of September at 7:23 PM, you availed yourself of a pre-arrival check-in online, which would have given you a room type we had listed and the request for a high floor. So I'm a bit perplexed that you arrived expecting an accessible room when both your confirmation and pre-arrival check specified a room on a high floor. As I check the reservation, it looks that when you checked in and were given a room that we showed as requested that at that time, you were moved to a room on the 1st floor, and you signed the registration card. Again on the registration card you signed, nowhere does it mention an accessible room. I apologize for any inconvenience or discomfort and invite you to call the hotel directly at (260) 768-7780, and we can attempt to make things right with you.

We stayed here 6 years ago on a tri[p to the area. The hotel was so nice that when we decided to come to the area again we automatically booked the hotel. NEVER AGAIN!! Room looked clean but comforter on the bed had brown stains. Towels were stained and yellow. There is a sign in the room saying no maid service so put dirty towels and trash in the hall. We were there 3 nights and our dirty towels pilled up in the hall for 3 days and no one ever picked them up. We never once saw one cleaning person. They did keep the house keeping doors propped open and you just go and get your own towels. Went to the pool the first evening and no one was there. We thought cool- we have the whole pool to ourselves! HA! The water was ICE cold. You couldn't get in over your ankles! We could not swim the whole time there because the water was so cold. Trash cans all over the property were over flowing and not changed the whole time we were there. We were on the 3rd floor and the elevator broke down on day 2 so we had to use the stairs the rest of the stay. We never went to breakfast at the hotel but on the last day hubby went to get some OJ and they didn't have any. Terrible stay!! Will never book there again. Exhaust fan didn't work, tub was clogged, floors dirty, chairs stained, and pillows hard.

My family reunion in mid-July 2022 was in Shipshewana and we stayed at this hotel. The first night we discovered the shower was broken. No maintenance man available. The next morning there was no breakfast because the scullery maid didn't show up for work and apparently nobody else in the entire hotel knew how to make coffee and scramble eggs. There was NOTHING to eat, and all the guests who showed up about 9:00 were furious. There was no housekeeping service AT ALL, and I was told at the front desk that I had to request it! I requested a 10% adjustment on the bill I had prepaid, in compensation for service I didn't get. I was promised a call, which never came. I wrote a letter, which was ignored. The manager was a liar and other desk persons were either totally stupid or were doing a great job of acting that way. I'd sue them if it were worth it.
