Babylonstoren is one of the oldest Cape Dutch farms. It has a fruit and vegetable garden of beauty and diversity, unique accommodation, fine food and wine, and a sense of wellbeing. With the Simonsberg, Du Toitskloof and Franschhoek mountains as backdrop, Babylonstoren's garden is majestic. Dating back to 1692, the fortunes of this historic fruit and wine farm took a turn ten years ago when it fell under the gaze of former magazine editor Karen Roos. Her passion for historic Cape Dutch style led to an authentic yet contemporary restoration that projects the farm into the future.

We booked a night as a treat to celebrate a birthday. We flew in from Durban specially to stay at Babylonstoren. Everything about this hotel from the food, staff, rooms, food, organized walks just oozes taste and attention to detail. The decor is amazing, the food sublime. Nothing is too much trouble for the incredibly happy staff. The gardens are unbelievable and to think that everything that you eat at the restaurants are grown at the farm. Best experience that I have ever had at a hotel.

Within minutes of our arrival we knew we made the right decision. We were welcomed by Jerome with great vigor and professionalism. Our bags were swept away and his focus immediately shifted to making us feel at home. We had arrived a bit early so the cleaning crew was still working on our cottage but that did not keep the team from getting us sorted for lunch in the greenhouse restaurant (excellent) then shuttled is off for a swim at the private pool house and pool. Everything at the pool house was first rate including in the selection of beer, wine and spirits. No charge for anything and our kids had a great swim while we enjoyed a much needed glass of wine. Our cottage was spectacular. Incredibly well designed and appointed. So much space and each design element thoughtfully incorporated. Food was consistently delicious. Service was solid. And endless ‘nice touches’ like the wellies for muddy walks, mountain bikes for winery tours and a stealth service for lighting our two fireplaces while we finished dinner in the restaurant. As Jerome said ‘we want you to feel like you are returning home’. Impressive. Your dedicated golf cart is a must for the drive from the new cottages at the back of the winery. Our kids loved the fresh air and short scenic drive. Excellent is the right rating and we’ll be back. Well done!

16 of us rolled up to Babylonstoren for a two night stay. The level of service and attention to detail in almost every aspect of the place are in abundance and immediately apparent. The facility itself is in a gorgeous location, nested at the base of jagged peaks. Lots of wine farms in the area are similarly beautiful of course, but the elaborate gardens set it apart from others I’ve visited. The lodging is amazing. The bungalows were some of the nicest lodging I’ve stayed anywhere in the world, with remarkable attention to details. The restaurant is good; service excellent. I say only ‘good’ because I was coming off of dinner the night before at the sublime Test Kitchen in CT; it will ruin any next meal. Also, while I endorse and respect the farm-to-fork approach, in the winter that means a lot of root vegetables. I have a finite tolerance for root vegetables. That’s about me though, not them. If you want a marvelous stay on a gorgeous rural property complete with fabulous lodging and a pleasant and attentive staff, it’s your choice. Like me, you won’t be ready to leave.

Am a regular visitor to Babylonstoren and really enjoy the excellent lunches served at Babel. The farm is also in pristine condition, no matter the time of year. Pity then that the normal rooms are not quite up to standard. The beds are tired and the rooms are to “farm”” for the rate charged. Other wise one of the very best day trips to make around Cape Town as my international guests will attest too as well.

We had a lovely stay at Babylonstoren with children. We had a farm chic, two bedroom cottage with a fireplace and library in the living room and heated floors in the kitchen and bathrooms. The hike to the top of the mountain on the estate was beautiful, the garden tour with Gundula was absolutely amazing - we learnt so much about the different areas of the garden, the healing and fragrant plants were fascinating. Everyone who took us around was very knowledgeable and passionate. There was a lot to do around the farm, from picking your own eggs for breakfast, baking your own breads, fishing, cycling around the estate, wine tasting, cellar tours to making your own hand and body scrubs in the scented room. Very relaxed as well - the food at Babel was completely farm and fresh. We had a fabulous stay and have already recommended it to our family and friends.
